Chapter 5 - Chapter Five: The Architecture of Us

The night after the drones failed to scan The Obsidian, the city felt different. To the rest of Aethelgard, it was just a glitch in the news. To Elara and Julian, it was a victory of the analog.

They met on the roof. The Oculus cameras were still there, their red eyes glowing, but they were blind to the two people sitting in the shadow of the gargoyles.

"What happens now?" Elara asked. She was holding the silver beetle Julian had made.

"Now," Julian said, "we live in the blind spot."

He reached out and took her hand. It was the first time they had touched without a tool or a crisis between them. Her hand was rough from stone, and his was smooth from glass.

"I've spent my life fixing buildings," Elara said, looking out over the city. "But I think I was just waiting for someone to notice the rooms I was hiding."

"I see them," Julian said. "Every one of them."

In a world that demanded to see everything, they had found the one thing that couldn't be scanned: the architecture of a secret shared.
