The Morning came with noise.
Voices. Movement. The usual tension always present in shadowfen.
Elara stood at the edge of the training ground, rolling her shoulders slightly, trying to loosen the stiffness in her body. She had barely slept. The memory of the night before still stayed with her.
Not because of fear.
At least not exactly.
Just… awareness.
Her senses felt clearer.
"Step forward."
The command came from one of the senior wolves overseeing training, a Gamma. Elara moved without hesitation, joining the others in the circle.
Pairs began to form.
Then
"I will take her."
The voice was female. Sharp. Confident.
Elara looked up.
Nyra.
One of the stronger females in the pack. Not the strongest but strong enough to know it. And proud enough to prove it.
A few quiet laughs spread around them.
"Go easy on her," someone muttered.
Elara ignored it.
Nyra stepped closer, a small smile on her lips. Not friendly.
"Try not to fall too quickly," she said.
Elara said nothing.
They shifted into position.
"Begin."
Nyra moved first.
Fast.
But not fast enough.
Elara reacted without thinking.
She stepped aside, her body moving on instinct. Nyra's strike missed completely. A small murmur rose around them.
Nyra frowned and came again, harder this time.
Elara blocked.
Clean.
Precise.
That was new.
Even she felt it.
Her body felt… lighter.
Her movements quicker.
Her hearing picked up every shift of weight, every breath, every step before it happened.
Nyra attacked again.
Elara moved.
Faster.
She turned, caught Nyra's wrist, and used her own force against her, sending her stumbling back.
Silence.
Complete silence.
Nyra steadied herself, eyes narrowing now. This was no longer mockery.
This was real.
She lunged again.
Elara did not hesitate this time.
She stepped forward, closing the distance, her reflexes sharp and sure. Her hand struck clean, controlled, stopping just short of Nyra's throat.
Nyra froze.
So did everyone else.
Elara blinked.
Her breathing was steady, but her mind was not.
What just happened?
She stepped back slowly.
"I… did not mean..."
"Enough," the trainer cut in quickly.
But the damage was done.
Everyone had seen it.
The whispers started immediately.
"That was not normal."
"Since when can she move like that?"
"Elara?"
Nyra said nothing, but her expression had changed.
Careful now.
Elara could feel it that something had changed.
And there was no taking it back.
She left before anyone could stop her.
The air felt too tight in the training ground, too full of questions she could not answer.
Her feet carried her toward the forest without thinking.
Toward the one place she always went.
A quiet part of the territory, hidden between tall trees and thick roots.
They called it Stillgrove.
It was always calm there. Mind relaxing.
Elara stepped into the shade, letting out a slow breath as the tension eased slightly.
This place felt different, safe and quieter.
She sat on a low stone, staring ahead.
"What is happening to me…" she murmured.
No answer.
Just the wind brushing through leaves.
Far from Shadowfen, Kael stood at the edge of his territory.
He should have stayed.
But he did not.
That pull again.
Stronger now.
Persistent.
He exhaled sharply and started moving.
Through the trees.
Across the border.
Straight toward it.
Elara felt it before she heard anything.
That presence.
Familiar now.
Her body stilled.
She stood slowly.
Then
A step behind her.
She turned.
Kael.
In human form this time.
Calm.
Steady.
Assured.
Her heart skipped.
"You came back," she said quietly.
"I did not plan to," he replied.
That was honest.
She could hear it.
A brief silence settled between them.
Not uncomfortable.
Just… heavy.
"You are different," he said after a moment.
Elara frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"
"I can feel it," he said simply.
She looked away.
"I do not understand it myself."
Kael stepped closer, slow, measured.
"Something changed."
She let out a small breath. "I know."
Another pause.
Then
"You fought today," he said.
Her head snapped up. "You were there?"
"No," he said. "But I can tell."
That confused her even more.
"How?"
He did not answer immediately.
"Because I felt it."
That landed.
The same way everything else had been lately.
Strangely Real and Unexplainable.
And not far from them…
Hidden beyond the trees…
She stood.
Watching.
Quiet.
Still.
Assured.
A faint smile touched her lips.
"Soon," she whispered softly.
"They are finding their way."
She did not step forward.
Did not reveal herself.
Not yet.
But her eyes stayed on them.
Patient.
Waiting.
Back in Stillgrove, neither of them noticed.
Not the watcher.
Not yet.
But something had already begun.
And this time…
Neither of them walked away.
