Chapter 99 - Friday; Qualifying XXV

Marcus Berg was in the motorhome.

He had been there since Q2 ended. His engineer had come to debrief twice and Berg had engaged with the data professionally both times — the jaw tight, the voice controlled, the mask of the experienced driver who processed setbacks as technical problems rather than personal ones still in place.

He had watched Q3 from the motorhome monitor.

He had watched the Sector 1 split come through. Had watched the Sector 2 split. Had watched the final time lock in and his teammate's name appear at the top of the Q3 classification in a position that Berg had not occupied in three seasons of F2 racing.

He sat with the tablet on his knee for a long time after the session ended.

The screen showed the Q3 board. Leo's name. The pole position notation. The gap to Rossi. The gap to the field.

Berg closed the tablet.

He put it face-down on the seat beside him.

He looked at the wall of the motorhome.
