Chapter 64 - The Awakening of the Shadow (Part - III)

The city was dying.

Not slowly.

Not peacefully.

It was disappearing.

One ancient tower after another turned into black dust and fell into the streets of Kaalvan. Bridges that had stood for thousands of years broke apart without sound. Temples lost their walls. The old lamps went dark.

And the memories of the people who had once lived there vanished with them.

Tez stood in the middle of the collapsing city.

His eyes were fixed on his father.

"Who was that child?"

Arvind did not answer.

"Father!"

Arvind looked at him.

There was something in his eyes that Tez had never seen before.

Not fear.

Guilt.

Deep, painful guilt.

"I wanted to tell you," Arvind said.

"When?"

"Before we came here."

"You had years."

"I know."

"You had my whole life."

Arvind lowered his head.

Tez's voice broke.

"You knew I had seen him."

"I knew you had seen something."

"You knew about the Shadow."

"Yes."

"You knew about the child."

Arvind closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Tez felt as if the ground beneath him had disappeared.

All his life he had believed his past had been stolen from him because his parents wanted to protect him from Vardhan.

But now he understood that Vardhan had never been the beginning of the story.

He had only been one part of it.

"Who was he?" Tez asked again.

Arvind looked toward the black sky.

"The first child."

"The first what?"

"The first child the Heart ever chose."

Maitreyi stepped forward.

"That cannot be true."

Arvind looked at her.

"You have studied the old records."

"Yes."

"Then you know the records were changed."

Maitreyi became silent.

Arvind continued.

"The Guardians wanted the world to believe there had only ever been two chosen bearers."

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

"Two."

Arvind nodded.

"You and Vaidehi."

"Then who was the third?"

Arvind looked toward the dark ground.

"The one before you."

Tez's breathing became heavy.

"Is he alive?"

Arvind did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Suddenly—

the city screamed.

It was not the sound of stone breaking.

It was not the sound of wind.

It was the sound of thousands of human voices crying at the same time.

Tez turned.

Across the city, the memory figures had begun running.

Some were crying.

Some were calling names.

Some were searching for people who were no longer there.

A mother ran through a collapsing street calling for her child.

An old warrior shouted the name of his dead brother.

A young girl stood beside a broken temple, asking why nobody could see her.

Then black mist passed through them.

One by one, they disappeared.

Vaidehi covered her mouth.

"It's destroying everything."

Maitreyi shook her head.

"No."

Tez looked at her.

She pointed toward the ground.

"It is removing the memories from the city."

"Why?"

"Because Kaalvan itself is made of memory."

The words struck Tez.

He looked around.

The city was not simply built from stone.

Every wall.

Every temple.

Every bridge.

Every name.

Every lamp.

Every carving—

was connected to memory.

"If the memories disappear…"

"Kaalvan disappears with them."

Another deep sound came from below.

DUM.

This time, the ground opened.

A huge crack appeared in the centre of the city.

Black light rose from it.

The light was so dark that it seemed to swallow the little light remaining around it.

Arvind grabbed Tez.

"We have to go."

Tez pulled his arm away.

"Where?"

"To the Heart."

"Why?"

"Because it is the only place where the Shadow can be stopped."

Vardhan's voice came from somewhere behind them.

"Stopped?"

Everyone turned.

Vardhan stood on the remains of an ancient bridge.

He looked exhausted.

But his eyes were bright.

"You still believe that?"

Arvind raised his blade.

"Vardhan."

"You spent your entire life protecting a lie."

"And you spent yours destroying everything you touched."

Vardhan's smile disappeared.

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

"No."

Vardhan looked at Tez.

"You have no idea what is beneath this city."

Tez stepped forward.

"Then tell me."

Vardhan stared at him.

"The Heart is not only a prison."

Arvind shouted:

"Don't listen to him."

Vardhan continued.

"It is also a doorway."

"To where?"

Vardhan looked toward the crack in the earth.

"To what existed before the Guardians."

The black mist rose higher.

Vardhan's voice became almost a whisper.

"The Shadow was never trapped because it was evil."

Arvind's face hardened.

"It was trapped because it was powerful."

"No."

Vardhan looked at him.

"It was trapped because the Guardians were afraid of what it could give humanity."

Tez stared at him.

"What could it give us?"

Vardhan smiled.

"The end of death."

Silence.

Tez remembered the old story.

Vardhan's brother.

His grief.

His obsession.

His search for the Amrit-Kund.

His refusal to accept death.

Everything suddenly made sense.

But Tez also remembered Aryan's words.

Immortality is not life.

Vardhan saw the doubt in Tez's face.

"You have heard their version of the story."

"And yours?"

"My brother died."

His voice changed.

For the first time, Vardhan did not sound like an enemy.

He sounded like a grieving man.

"I held him in my arms."

His fingers tightened.

"I watched the light leave his eyes."

He looked toward Tez.

"Tell me, Tez. If there was a way to bring him back, would you refuse it?"

Tez thought of his own family.

His mother.

His village.

Everyone he had lost.

For one terrible moment, he imagined it.

His mother standing before him again.

His home restored.

The smell of morning fires in Suryanagari.

His father's voice.

The life that had been taken from him.

The thought hurt.

But then he remembered what the Amrit-Kund had demanded.

A price.

A terrible price.

And he understood.

"No," Tez said.

Vardhan stared at him.

"I would not bring them back if the price was another person's life."

Vardhan's eyes hardened.

"Then you are weaker than I thought."

"No."

Tez looked at him.

"I am finally strong enough to let the dead remain at peace."

For a moment, Vardhan said nothing.

Then something moved behind him.

A black shadow passed across the broken bridge.

Vardhan turned.

His face changed.

"It's here."

Arvind immediately looked toward the crack.

"Everyone, move!"

The ground exploded.

A wave of black mist rushed across Kaalvan.

Tez grabbed Vaidehi.

Devadatta pulled Maitreyi behind a stone pillar.

Aarav and Bhaskar fell to the ground.

The mist struck the pillar.

The stone turned black.

Then it disappeared.

Not broke.

Not burned.

It simply ceased to exist.

Tez stared.

The Shadow was not destroying things.

It was erasing them.

A voice came from the darkness.

"You cannot stop what you once invited."

Tez's palm burned.

Vaidehi cried out.

Her Seal was glowing.

The two Seals pulled toward each other.

Tez tried to hold his hand back.

He could not.

Vaidehi reached for him.

Their palms touched.

The world changed.

White light exploded through Kaalvan.

The black mist stopped.

Every memory figure froze.

Every falling stone hung in the air.

Even the Shadow became still.

Tez and Vaidehi stood surrounded by light.

The two Seals had joined.

But this time they did not form one symbol.

They formed two circles.

One white.

One black.

Between them appeared the shape of the Heart.

Maitreyi stared.

"The seals…"

Arvind whispered:

"They have awakened."

Tez looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Arvind's face was filled with dread.

"They were never keys."

"What?"

"They were locks."

Vaidehi stared at him.

"Then why do they open the cities?"

"They don't."

Arvind looked toward the seven ancient paths disappearing beneath Kaalvan.

"The cities open because the Seals are waking."

Tez's heart began beating faster.

"The seven cities…"

"Are seven locks."

"And the Seals?"

"The final lock."

Tez looked at his palm.

"And us?"

Arvind did not answer.

Vaidehi did.

"We are the prison."

Everyone turned toward her.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"I understand now."

She looked at Tez.

"The Shadow said I was the lock."

She touched her Seal.

"And my mother said you were the door."

Tez slowly understood.

"You and I together…"

Vaidehi nodded.

"Can either seal it…"

She looked toward the darkness.

"…or open it."

A terrible silence followed.

Then Vardhan laughed.

Not loudly.

Not happily.

Almost sadly.

"You finally understand."

Arvind looked at him.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"You used them."

"I followed the path the Guardians left behind."

"You awakened the cities."

"Yes."

"You weakened the prison."

"Yes."

Arvind raised his blade.

"You doomed the world."

Vardhan looked at him.

"No."

He pointed toward the darkness.

"You did."

The black mist suddenly moved.

It passed around Vardhan.

Instead of attacking him—

it entered him.

Vardhan screamed.

Tez stepped forward.

"Vardhan!"

Black lines spread across Vardhan's face.

His body shook.

Arvind shouted:

"Stay away!"

Vardhan fell to his knees.

The Shadow came out of his body.

But it did not leave completely.

A thin black thread remained connected to his chest.

Vardhan looked up.

His eyes were no longer entirely his own.

"Now I understand," he whispered.

"What?"

"The Shadow never wanted the Amrit-Kund."

Tez froze.

"What did it want?"

Vardhan looked directly at him.

"You."

Then the thread broke.

Vardhan collapsed.

Tez moved toward him.

But Arvind stopped him.

"Don't."

"He may be alive."

"He is not the danger anymore."

Tez looked toward the sky.

The black star was changing.

Its centre had opened.

A black beam of light fell toward Kaalvan.

It struck the ground.

The city shook violently.

The white light around Tez and Vaidehi flickered.

The two Seals began pulling apart.

Tez held Vaidehi's hand.

"Don't let go."

"I won't."

The ground beneath them cracked.

A staircase appeared.

It led downward.

Far below.

Deeper than any place they had ever seen.

At the bottom was a vast chamber.

And in the centre of that chamber stood the Heart.

But it was not the Heart they had seen before.

It was enormous.

A massive sphere of ancient crystal and stone floated above a black pit.

Seven chains surrounded it.

Each chain led toward one of the seven cities.

Six chains were glowing.

The seventh was broken.

Maitreyi stared in horror.

"The seventh lock…"

Arvind whispered:

"Has already fallen."

Tez looked at the Heart.

"What happens if all seven fall?"

Arvind answered:

"The prison opens."

The First Shadow spoke.

"Not prison."

The voice shook the chamber.

"Home."

The black pit beneath the Heart began moving.

Something was breathing inside it.

Slowly.

Deeply.

The sound filled the entire underground world.

Haaaaa…

The air moved.

Then—

Haaaaa…

Dust rose from the floor.

Tez stared into the darkness.

"It's breathing."

Arvind nodded.

"The First Breath."

Vaidehi's fingers tightened around Tez's.

"It's awake."

"No," Maitreyi whispered.

She was staring into the pit.

"It is becoming awake."

Suddenly, thousands of voices filled the chamber.

Some were crying.

Some were laughing.

Some were screaming.

Some were whispering Tez's name.

Then one voice rose above all the others.

A child's voice.

The same voice Tez had heard before.

"Tez."

He stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The darkness answered.

"You know."

"I don't."

"You promised."

Tez's hand burned.

The white Seal became brighter.

Vaidehi's black mark began glowing.

The Heart began turning.

Seven symbols appeared around it.

Six shone with pale light.

The seventh was completely dark.

Then the two Seals changed.

The white circle on Tez's palm became gold.

The black circle on Vaidehi's hand became silver.

A beam of light connected them.

The First Shadow suddenly screamed.

The sound was so powerful that the walls of the chamber cracked.

Tez fell to his knees.

Vaidehi cried out.

Maitreyi covered her ears.

Arvind dropped his blade.

The Shadow rose from the pit.

This time it was enormous.

Far larger than the form that had appeared above Kaalvan.

It filled the chamber.

Its darkness touched the ceiling.

Its shape had no face.

Yet Tez could feel its eyes.

Looking at him.

Remembering him.

Waiting for him.

The Shadow spoke.

"You were not chosen, Tez."

Tez slowly stood.

"What?"

"You were returned."

The words struck him harder than any weapon.

Returned?

Returned from where?

Tez looked at Arvind.

His father was crying.

For the first time, Tez saw tears in Arvind's eyes.

"Father…"

Arvind whispered:

"I am sorry."

The Shadow continued.

"You died once."

Tez's body became cold.

"No."

"You were brought back."

"No."

"And she…"

The darkness turned toward Vaidehi.

"…was the one who asked me to do it."

Vaidehi's face became white.

"I never…"

She stopped.

A memory suddenly entered her mind.

A little girl.

Standing before the Heart.

Crying.

Holding a lifeless child's hand.

Tez.

The child Tez.

Dead.

Vaidehi heard her younger voice.

"Please bring him back."

The Heart answered.

And the First Shadow whispered:

"I can."

Vaidehi screamed.

"No!"

The memory shattered.

Tez caught her.

She looked at him with horror.

"I asked it…"

Her voice broke.

"I asked it to save you."

Tez could not speak.

The Shadow laughed softly.

Not like a monster.

Like someone who had been waiting for a secret to be remembered.

"And you promised me something in return."

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

She was crying.

"What did I promise?"

The Shadow answered.

"You promised to return."

The chamber shook.

The Heart cracked.

A thin black line appeared across its surface.

Then another.

Then another.

Arvind shouted:

"Tez! Vaidehi! Use the Seals!"

"How?"

"Together!"

They raised their hands.

The white and silver light grew stronger.

The black cracks in the Heart began closing.

For one moment, it seemed to work.

The Shadow screamed.

But then—

a third mark appeared.

Not on Tez.

Not on Vaidehi.

On the Heart itself.

A symbol neither of them had seen before.

Maitreyi stepped backward.

"What is that?"

Arvind stared.

His face became completely empty.

"It cannot be."

Tez looked at him.

"What?"

Arvind whispered:

"The third Seal."

The chamber went silent.

"The third what?"

Arvind looked at Tez.

"The one the Guardians erased from history."

Tez stared at the Heart.

A shape slowly began forming inside it.

A small human hand pressed against the crystal from within.

Then another.

The Heart cracked open.

A child's face appeared behind the crystal.

Tez stopped breathing.

It was the child from his memory.

The third child.

The child who had called his name.

The child who was supposed to have died.

His eyes opened.

He looked directly at Tez.

And smiled.

Then he spoke.

"Brother."

Tez's heart stopped.

Behind the child, something enormous moved.

The First Shadow lowered its head.

And for the first time—

Tez understood the truth.

The Shadow had not been waiting for him to open the prison.

It had been waiting for him to come home.

The chamber exploded with black light.

The Heart broke.

The seven chains snapped one after another.

And from beneath Kaalvan came a sound that had not been heard since the beginning of the Guardians.

A single breath.

The First Breath.

Then everything went dark.
