Chapter 59 - The Black Star (Part - II)

The stone door moved.

At first, it made no sound.

It simply trembled beneath Tez's hand, as if something on the other side had been waiting for his touch for many years.

Then came a deep sound from within the earth.

Dhum...

The floor shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Vaidehi stepped closer to Tez.

"Tez…"

He did not answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the door.

The two symbols carved upon it—the boy and the girl—were glowing now.

Between them was the symbol of the Heart.

The same symbol that had followed Tez since the beginning of his strange journey.

The same symbol that had appeared in forgotten temples, hidden cities, ancient records, and dreams.

But now there was something different.

The symbol of the Heart was divided into two parts.

One part glowed beneath the mark of the boy.

The other glowed beneath the mark of the girl.

Tez slowly looked at Vaidehi.

Her pendant was shining.

Not brightly.

Not like fire.

It gave a soft white-blue light, almost like moonlight.

Vaidehi looked at it with fear in her eyes.

"I have seen this before," she whispered.

"Where?"

She closed her eyes.

"In my dreams."

Before Tez could ask anything more, the door opened.

A cold wind rushed out.

It carried a smell of old stone, wet earth, and something else.

Something that reminded Tez of ashes.

For one strange moment, he felt as if he were standing again in Suryanagari.

He could almost hear crying.

He could almost smell smoke.

He could almost hear his mother's voice.

Then the feeling vanished.

Tez stepped forward.

Vaidehi caught his hand.

"Don't go alone."

Tez looked at her.

"I won't."

Behind them, Devadatta raised his torch.

Maitreyi looked at the opening with a serious face.

"We should be careful."

Aarav tightened the cloth around his injured arm.

Bhaskar looked into the darkness.

"What is this place?"

Maitreyi answered quietly.

"The third city."

She paused.

"Or what remains of it."

They entered.

---

The passage went downward.

Much deeper than any passage they had crossed before.

The walls were covered with carvings.

Some showed rivers.

Some showed mountains.

Some showed forests.

Others showed people sitting in meditation.

But there were no faces.

Every face had been scratched away.

Tez touched one of the carvings.

"Why did someone destroy the faces?"

Maitreyi looked at the wall.

"Because this city was built to forget."

Tez turned toward her.

"What does that mean?"

"The Guardians of this place were different from the others."

"How?"

"They did not protect weapons. They did not protect treasures."

Maitreyi's voice became softer.

"They protected memories."

Tez stopped walking.

"Memories?"

Maitreyi nodded.

"Memories that could destroy kingdoms. Memories of forbidden knowledge. Memories of people who were erased from history."

Vaidehi looked around.

"And people came here to forget?"

"Some came here because they wanted to forget."

Maitreyi looked at Tez.

"Others were brought here because someone wanted the world to forget them."

Silence filled the passage.

Tez understood the meaning immediately.

His heart began beating faster.

"My memories."

Maitreyi did not answer.

She did not need to.

They continued downward.

---

After several minutes, the passage suddenly opened.

Tez stopped.

His breath caught.

A city lay beneath the earth.

Not a small city.

Not ruins.

A complete ancient city.

Its towers rose from a huge underground valley.

Stone bridges crossed deep black channels.

Large stairways led toward temples.

Thousands of lamps burned along the walls, although there was no one there to light them.

The city seemed alive.

But there were no people.

No voices.

No animals.

No movement.

Only silence.

A silence so deep that Tez could hear his own heartbeat.

Bhaskar whispered,

"How can a city this large exist beneath the earth?"

Maitreyi stared ahead.

"This is Kaalvan."

"The Forgotten City."

The name seemed to travel through the empty streets.

Kaalvan.

And somewhere far away, something answered.

A single bell.

Gong.

Tez felt a cold wave pass through him.

Vaidehi moved closer.

"What was that?"

"I don't know," Tez said.

But he knew one thing.

They were not alone.

---

They entered the city.

Every building had a closed door.

Every window was covered with stone.

Every street ended at another sealed gate.

On some walls were written names.

Hundreds of names.

Thousands.

Men.

Women.

Children.

Guardians.

Kings.

Sages.

People whose stories had disappeared from history.

Tez stopped before one wall.

He read the names.

Some were written in old forms of the language.

Some were almost impossible to understand.

Then he saw something familiar.

His eyes widened.

He moved closer.

There was a name.

Not his.

His father's.

Devadatta.

Tez turned sharply.

Devadatta was standing several steps behind him.

Tez's face changed.

"You were here."

Devadatta said nothing.

"You knew this place."

Still nothing.

Tez's voice became harder.

"You knew."

Devadatta looked at the name on the wall.

Then he lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

Tez felt anger rise inside him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you were not ready."

"You keep saying that!"

Tez stepped toward him.

"Everywhere we go, I discover another lie."

Devadatta's face showed pain.

"I was trying to protect you."

"You protected me by hiding my life from me."

Devadatta took a slow breath.

"You think I don't know what that cost?"

His voice broke slightly.

"Every day I watched you grow while knowing that one day the truth would come for you."

Tez stared at him.

"What happened here?"

Devadatta looked toward the dark city.

"Your mother brought you here."

Tez froze.

Vaidehi looked at him.

"What?"

Devadatta continued.

"Not once."

He swallowed.

"Many times."

Tez felt the world become strangely quiet.

"As a child…"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To hide you."

"From Vardhan?"

Devadatta shook his head.

"From everyone."

---

They entered an old temple at the centre of Kaalvan.

Inside was a circular chamber.

There were no idols.

No statues.

Only stone mirrors.

Maitreyi moved toward the centre.

"These are Memory Chambers."

Tez looked at the mirrors.

"What do they show?"

"Whatever the city believes you have forgotten."

Vaidehi's face became pale.

Tez looked at her.

"Are you afraid?"

She gave a faint smile.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I think I am going to remember something I was never supposed to remember."

Before Tez could answer, the nearest mirror began to glow.

A picture appeared.

A small child.

Tez.

He was perhaps five years old.

He was running through a forest.

A young girl was running beside him.

Tez stared.

The girl turned.

It was Vaidehi.

Not the Vaidehi standing beside him now.

A child.

The same eyes.

The same pendant.

Tez stepped closer.

"No…"

Vaidehi covered her mouth.

"I know her."

The memory continued.

The two children were laughing.

They ran toward two women.

Tez's mother.

Vaidehi's mother.

The two women stood beside a large tree.

Tez's mother was holding something wrapped in cloth.

She knelt before the children.

"Listen carefully," she said.

The young Tez looked at her.

"What?"

"Some things must be forgotten so they can survive."

Young Vaidehi looked confused.

"Why?"

Her mother touched her head.

"Because people who know too much become targets."

The memory shifted.

The two women were standing together.

Tez's mother whispered,

"They are already looking for him."

Vaidehi's mother looked frightened.

"And the girl?"

"She must be protected too."

"Will they remember each other?"

Tez's mother shook her head.

"No."

"Then how will they find each other?"

She looked toward the Heart symbol carved into the tree.

"The Heart will remember for them."

The memory disappeared.

Tez stood completely still.

Vaidehi was crying silently.

"You were there," she whispered.

Tez looked at her.

"So were you."

"I knew you."

"Yes."

"For how long?"

Tez shook his head.

"I don't know."

A sudden pain struck his head.

He fell to one knee.

Vaidehi rushed toward him.

"Tez!"

Images exploded through his mind.

A river.

A temple.

A burning village.

A small hand holding his.

Vaidehi laughing.

His mother crying.

A man standing in the darkness.

Vardhan.

Then another image.

A door.

A black door.

And a voice.

"Do not let them reach the Heart."

Tez screamed.

The memory broke.

He opened his eyes.

Vaidehi was holding his shoulders.

"Tez, look at me."

He breathed heavily.

"I remember."

"What?"

"You."

Vaidehi's eyes filled with tears.

"I remember you too."

---

A slow clap echoed through the chamber.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Vardhan.

He looked calm.

Almost peaceful.

But his eyes were cold.

"You finally remember," he said.

Tez stood.

"You followed us."

Vardhan smiled.

"I never needed to follow you."

He looked at the walls.

"Kaalvan has always been connected to me."

Maitreyi stepped forward.

"You were one of its students."

Vardhan's expression changed.

"Once."

"Before you turned against the Guardians."

"No."

His voice became darker.

"Before the Guardians turned against me."

Tez moved forward.

"You erased our memories."

Vardhan looked at him.

"No."

Tez's fists tightened.

"Then who did?"

"Your parents."

Silence.

Vardhan continued.

"They were afraid of what you would become."

Tez shook his head.

"You are lying."

"Perhaps."

Vardhan smiled.

"But ask yourself something."

He pointed toward the two symbols on the wall.

"Why were you and Vaidehi brought here as children?"

Tez had no answer.

Vardhan's eyes moved toward Vaidehi.

"Why was her mother willing to erase her own daughter's memory?"

Vaidehi stepped forward.

"You knew my mother?"

"I knew what she protected."

"What?"

Vardhan looked at the two pendants.

"The second half of the key."

Vaidehi's hand went to her pendant.

Vardhan's voice became almost a whisper.

"Your mothers believed they could hide the truth from the Heart."

He laughed softly.

"They were wrong."

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

The two Seals began to glow.

One in his hand.

One around her neck.

Their light reached toward each other.

A line of light formed between them.

Then the two symbols joined.

A complete Guardian Seal appeared in the air.

Vardhan's smile disappeared.

"The Heart has chosen you both."

---

Suddenly, the entire city shook.

The lamps along the streets went out one by one.

Gong.

Another bell rang.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The whole city began to awaken.

Doors opened.

Memory chambers unlocked.

Voices filled the streets.

People who had been forgotten began whispering.

Crying.

Calling names.

Thousands of memories returned at once.

Tez heard his mother's voice.

Not from a mirror.

Not from a dream.

From somewhere deep inside the city.

"Tez…"

He turned.

"Mother?"

The voice came again.

"Listen to me."

The walls began to crack.

Vaidehi stood beside him.

Tez looked toward Vardhan.

For the first time, the ancient man looked afraid.

The voice continued.

"The greatest danger is not Vardhan."

Tez's blood ran cold.

Vardhan looked toward the darkness.

"Impossible."

Maitreyi whispered,

"What is happening?"

Tez heard his mother's voice one final time.

"There is someone older."

The ground split.

A massive black stone door rose from beneath the temple.

Two handprints appeared upon it.

One for Tez.

One for Vaidehi.

And beneath them was the symbol of the Heart.

Tez slowly walked toward it.

Vaidehi followed.

Vardhan shouted,

"Don't open it!"

Tez turned.

"Why?"

Vardhan's face had lost all its confidence.

"Because that door was sealed before the first Guardians existed."

Tez looked back at the door.

A terrible thought entered his mind.

"Who is behind it?"

Vardhan said nothing.

Then the black star appeared above Kaalvan.

It was no longer far away.

It filled the underground sky like a burning black sun.

The entire city went dark.

Tez placed his hand on the first mark.

Vaidehi placed hers on the second.

The two Seals joined.

The door opened.

A cold wind rushed out.

And in the darkness beyond the door stood a man.

Tez could see only his outline at first.

Then the light from the Heart touched his face.

Tez stopped breathing.

His eyes widened.

His entire body became still.

He knew that face.

He had seen it in dreams.

In memories.

In the stories of his childhood.

In the pain he had carried all his life.

The man looked at him.

His eyes were filled with sorrow.

Then he spoke.

"Tez."

Tez's lips trembled.

"Father…?"

The man took one step forward.

And behind him, something enormous moved in the darkness.

Something that had been waiting for them for centuries.

The black star above Kaalvan began to crack.

And from the darkness came a voice older than Vardhan, older than the Guardians, older than the forgotten cities.

"The two chosen ones have returned."

The door slammed shut.

And Kaalvan woke.
