Chapter 45 - The Traitor's Shadow - The Face Behind the Shadow

The night seemed to hold its breath.

Tez stood inside the ruined watchtower, staring at the sleeping figures.

He had finally discovered what he had feared.

There was a traitor among them.

Someone who had travelled beside him.

Someone who had eaten at the same fire, fought the same enemies and shared the same dangers.

Someone who knew exactly where they were going.

Someone who knew about the Guardian Seal.

Someone who believed Tez trusted him completely.

But Tez had not yet seen the traitor's face.

Only the voice.

Only the shadow.

And that was not enough.

He needed proof.

More importantly, he needed to know why.

Vaidehi stood beside him.

"Are you sure?"

Tez nodded.

"I heard the voice."

"Could you recognize it?"

"Yes."

"Then tell me."

Tez looked at the sleeping group.

"Not yet."

Vaidehi understood.

"If we accuse the wrong person, we lose everything."

"And if we accuse the right person too early, we may lose Naman."

Tez's expression hardened.

"We need both."

The Trap

Before dawn, Tez quietly woke Bhaskar.

"We're leaving."

Bhaskar looked surprised.

"Where?"

"The western ridge."

"Now?"

"Before sunrise."

Bhaskar glanced toward the others.

"What about them?"

"They stay here."

Bhaskar studied Tez's face.

"You discovered something."

Tez nodded.

"Something dangerous."

The warrior did not ask further.

He trusted Tez.

That trust made Tez feel guilty.

"We may be walking into a trap," Tez warned.

Bhaskar smiled faintly.

"Then it is fortunate I have walked into worse traps."

Tez almost smiled.

Almost.

He turned toward Vaidehi.

She was ready.

A small bag hung over her shoulder.

Her mother's pendant rested against her chest.

Tez looked at it.

"Ready?"

"Yes."

"Afraid?"

"Very."

She smiled.

"But I'm going anyway."

They left the tower before sunrise.

Following the Shadow

The footprints they had discovered earlier led toward the western ridge.

Tez and Vaidehi followed them carefully.

The path was narrow.

Steep rocks rose on one side.

A deep valley fell away on the other.

They walked for nearly an hour without speaking.

Then Vaidehi whispered,

"Someone is ahead."

Tez stopped.

Far ahead, a cloaked figure moved between the rocks.

The same figure from the previous night.

Tez signaled Vaidehi.

They followed.

The figure eventually reached an old stone bridge.

There, a Black Eclipse soldier waited.

The cloaked person handed him something.

The soldier examined it.

"The Seal?"

"Not yet."

"Then where is it?"

"With the boy."

"When will he arrive?"

"Tomorrow."

The soldier laughed.

"He trusts you."

The cloaked figure remained silent.

"Does he suspect anything?"

"No."

The soldier stepped closer.

"Good."

Tez watched from behind a rock.

Vaidehi whispered,

"That's definitely one of ours."

Tez nodded.

Then the soldier said something that made Tez's blood run cold.

"Once the boy enters the sanctuary, we take the Seal and kill anyone who resists."

The cloaked figure answered quietly:

"No."

The soldier looked surprised.

"The boy must remain alive."

"Why?"

"Because his blood is required to open the final chamber."

Tez's eyes widened.

His blood.

That was the true reason they wanted him.

Not revenge.

Not his father's legacy.

Not even the Guardian Seal alone.

Tez himself was the key.

The Unexpected Revelation

The Black Eclipse soldier pulled out a small scroll.

"The Master wants him alive."

"The Master?"

Tez leaned closer.

The cloaked figure asked,

"Has he revealed himself?"

"Not yet."

"Then you don't understand."

The soldier smiled.

"He has already chosen his successor."

The cloaked figure became still.

"Who?"

The soldier whispered a name.

Tez could not hear it.

A sudden wind swept through the valley.

The soldier's voice disappeared.

But the cloaked figure clearly heard it.

And his body stiffened.

Tez realized something.

Even the traitor did not know everything.

The Black Eclipse was hiding things from its own agents.

That meant there were deeper layers to the conspiracy.

The soldier turned.

"We should go."

The cloaked figure nodded.

They disappeared into the rocks.

Tez waited until the path was empty.

Then he stepped out.

"We follow them."

Vaidehi looked at him.

"Where?"

"To wherever they are taking Naman."

The Prison Beneath the Ridge

The trail led to an abandoned stone temple.

Its entrance was nearly hidden by vines.

Tez examined the carvings.

"This was once a Guardian shrine."

Vaidehi touched the wall.

"Why would the Black Eclipse use it?"

"Because they know our places better than we do."

They entered.

Inside was a broken statue of an ancient sage.

Behind it was a staircase.

Tez and Vaidehi descended.

The air became colder.

They heard voices.

Then a familiar sound.

Someone coughing.

Tez stopped.

"Naman."

They moved faster.

At the bottom was a small prison chamber.

Naman was sitting against a wall.

His hands were tied.

He looked exhausted.

But alive.

Tez rushed toward him.

"Naman!"

Naman looked up.

"Tez?"

Vaidehi quickly cut the ropes.

Naman struggled to stand.

"How did you find me?"

"We followed the traitor."

Naman's face changed.

"You shouldn't have come."

"Why?"

"They know you're coming."

Tez looked around.

"Who?"

Naman swallowed.

"The traitor."

Naman's Secret

Tez helped Naman stand.

"What happened?"

Naman hesitated.

"They captured me because I saw something."

"What?"

"The traitor."

Tez's expression became serious.

"What did you see?"

Naman looked toward Vaidehi.

"Do you really want to know?"

"Yes."

Naman lowered his voice.

"I saw him speaking to the Black Eclipse before we reached the Seven Fires."

Tez nodded.

"I already know."

Naman looked surprised.

"You do?"

"I heard him myself."

"Then you know who it is?"

"No."

Naman looked confused.

"You don't?"

"I only heard the voice."

Naman shook his head.

"I saw his face."

Tez's heart began pounding.

"Who?"

Naman looked directly at him.

Then he whispered the name.

Tez froze.

It was the person he had trusted most after losing his family.

The person who had repeatedly protected him.

The person whose loyalty he had never questioned.

Tez whispered,

"No."

Naman nodded.

"Yes."

Vaidehi looked at Tez.

"Who?"

Tez could barely speak.

"It is..."

Before he could finish, a voice came from behind them.

"Don't."

They turned.

The cloaked figure stood at the entrance.

Slowly, he removed the hood.

Tez's face went pale.

It was Bhaskar.

The Man Tez Trusted

For several seconds, Tez could not move.

Bhaskar looked at him.

There was no anger in his eyes.

Only sadness.

Tez's voice finally came.

"Why?"

Bhaskar looked away.

"I didn't want you to find out like this."

"You betrayed us."

"I did."

"You led the Black Eclipse to us."

"Yes."

"You knew about my father."

Bhaskar remained silent.

Tez stepped forward.

"Answer me!"

Bhaskar finally looked at him.

"I knew Devadatta."

Tez's breath caught.

"When?"

"Long before Suryanagari."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he asked me not to."

Tez shook his head.

"Why?"

"Because he knew what would happen if the Black Eclipse discovered you."

Tez's anger slowly changed into confusion.

"Then why are you working with them?"

Bhaskar looked at Naman.

"Because they have someone."

"Who?"

Bhaskar closed his eyes.

"My daughter."

Silence.

Tez's anger disappeared.

Bhaskar's Choice

Bhaskar continued.

"The Black Eclipse took her years ago."

"They promised that if I helped them, they would keep her alive."

Tez stared at him.

"How long?"

"Seven years."

"You have been serving them for seven years?"

"I have been trying to save her for seven years."

Vaidehi asked quietly,

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know she's alive?"

"They send me proof."

Bhaskar removed a small cloth from around his neck.

Inside was a child's bracelet.

"Every time I complete a task, they send me something."

Tez looked at it.

He understood.

Bhaskar had not betrayed them because he hated them.

He had been trapped.

But that did not erase what he had done.

"You could have told us."

"I tried."

"When?"

"Many times."

"Then why didn't you?"

Bhaskar looked at Tez.

"Because I knew what you would do."

"What?"

"You would try to save her."

"And that would make you a target."

Tez was silent.

Bhaskar continued:

"I couldn't let another person die because of me."

Tez thought of his own family.

He understood the desperation.

But understanding did not make betrayal harmless.

The True Enemy

Naman suddenly spoke.

"There's something else."

Everyone turned.

"The Black Eclipse isn't being led by the man we thought."

Bhaskar's expression changed.

"What did they tell you?"

Naman shook his head.

"I overheard them."

"They were talking about someone called the First Shadow."

Tez frowned.

"Who is that?"

Bhaskar looked frightened.

"I don't know."

Naman continued.

"They said the First Shadow has been watching Tez since Suryanagari."

Vaidehi's face became pale.

"Watching him?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Tez is the last living descendant of the Guardian bloodline that can open the First Sanctuary."

Tez looked at his hands.

His blood.

His family.

The Seal.

Everything was connected.

The Betrayal's Deeper Truth

Bhaskar stepped toward Tez.

"I am sorry."

Tez looked at him.

"I believe you."

Bhaskar seemed surprised.

"But I don't forgive you yet."

Bhaskar nodded.

"You shouldn't."

"But we have a bigger problem."

Tez looked toward the entrance.

"The Black Eclipse knows where we are."

Bhaskar nodded.

"And they will come."

"How long?"

"Not long."

Vaidehi looked at Tez.

"What do we do?"

Tez thought.

Then he remembered his father's teachings.

A Guardian was not someone who possessed knowledge.

A Guardian knew when to use it.

Tez looked at Bhaskar.

"Can you get us through their lines?"

"Yes."

"Can you find your daughter?"

Bhaskar hesitated.

"I can try."

"Then we do both."

Naman stared at him.

"You still trust him?"

Tez shook his head.

"Not completely."

He looked at Bhaskar.

"But I believe he can choose what is right now."

Bhaskar lowered his eyes.

"Thank you."

The Western Sanctuary

They escaped the prison through an underground passage.

Bhaskar led them through narrow tunnels known only to the Black Eclipse.

Hours later, they emerged on a high ridge.

The view stopped them.

Far across the mountains stood a massive stone structure carved into the cliff.

Seven pillars surrounded its entrance.

A river flowed beneath it.

And above the doorway was the symbol of the First Guardian.

Tez whispered,

"The Western Sanctuary."

Vaidehi stepped closer.

"My mother came here."

Tez nodded.

"So did my father."

Bhaskar looked toward the sanctuary.

"They are waiting inside."

Tez turned.

"You know this?"

Bhaskar shook his head.

"No."

"Then how?"

Bhaskar pointed toward the entrance.

Someone had lit a lamp there.

A second lamp appeared.

Then a third.

They formed a line leading into the sanctuary.

Tez's heart began pounding.

Someone was inviting them in.

The Message

They reached the entrance.

A small wooden flute hung from a tree beside the path.

Tez stopped.

He recognized it immediately.

The same kind of flute his father had carved for him as a child.

He touched it.

There was writing underneath.

He carefully removed the strip of palm leaf attached to it.

His father's handwriting.

"My son, if you have found this, then you are very close."

Tez's eyes filled with tears.

The next line was harder to read.

"Do not come alone."

Tez looked at the people around him.

Vaidehi.

Naman.

Bhaskar.

And the others waiting farther behind.

His father had known.

He had known Tez would need them.

Then Tez noticed something else.

A second message was carved beneath the first.

"The person you fear is not the one you should fear."

Tez frowned.

Then another line appeared.

"Look beyond the shadow."

A cold wind swept across the ridge.

Tez slowly looked toward the sanctuary.

Someone stood inside the entrance.

A man.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

White clothing.

He stepped forward into the light.

Tez stopped breathing.

The man's face became visible.

It was the face Tez had seen in his dreams for years.

The face he had believed was lost forever.

The face of his father.

Devadatta.

Tez could not move.

Vaidehi whispered,

"Tez..."

The man looked directly at him.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Tez."

Tez's lips trembled.

"Father?"

Devadatta took one step forward.

But before Tez could reach him, another figure appeared behind Devadatta.

A dark-robed man.

His face hidden.

His hand resting on Devadatta's shoulder.

Then the stranger looked directly at Tez.

And smiled.

The seven ancient pillars suddenly burst into flame.

The Guardian Seal in Tez's hand began burning with light.

And from somewhere deep inside the sanctuary came a voice:

"The final Guardian has arrived."

Tez stared at his father.

Then at the stranger.

And finally at the burning Seal.

He understood.

His journey had never simply been about finding his father.

It had been leading him toward something much older.

Something powerful.

Something that had been waiting for him since the day Suryanagari burned.

Tez stepped forward.

Whatever waited inside the sanctuary, he would face it.

Not as the frightened boy who had lost everything.

But as the person he had become.
