Chapter 29 - The Village of Silence - Beneath the Old Well

Tez stood motionless in the darkness.

The cool night breeze brushed against his face, but he hardly noticed it. His attention was fixed on the old village well.

The voices had stopped.

Only the faint sound of dripping water echoed from below.

He took one careful step closer and looked into the well again.

The moonlight reflected on the water, making it appear calm and ordinary.

"Did I imagine it?" he wondered.

Just then...

A dim light flickered far below the water's reflection.

It disappeared almost immediately.

Tez knew he had not imagined anything.

Someone was beneath the well.

Instead of climbing down alone, Tez quietly returned to the meeting hall.

Everyone was asleep except Naman, who had been assigned the last watch.

Naman looked up in surprise.

"You've been outside?"

Tez nodded.

"I heard voices."

"Where?"

"From beneath the village well."

Naman stared at him.

"Beneath the well?"

Tez spoke softly so that no one else would wake.

"I think someone is hiding there."

"And I believe they are connected to the illness."

Naman became serious.

"Should we wake Bhaskar?"

Tez thought for a moment.

"If we wake everyone now, the people below may escape before we find them."

"So what do you suggest?"

"We investigate first."

"If we discover something important, we'll call the others."

Naman trusted Tez completely.

"Then I'm coming with you."

The two friends quietly left the hall.

The village slept peacefully.

Only the barking of a distant dog broke the silence.

When they reached the well, Tez covered the small oil lamp with a cloth so that only a faint light escaped.

Together they carefully examined the old stone wall.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

The stones were worn with age.

Moss covered most of them.

Then Naman noticed something.

"Look."

Near the back of the well, hidden behind thick vines, one stone was smoother than the others.

It also carried a faded carving.

Tez brushed away the moss.

A circle surrounded by small rays.

The same ancient symbol he had seen before.

Not the symbol of the Black Eclipse...

But the symbol carved on the leather pouch his father had protected.

His heart beat faster.

"The Guardians..."

he whispered.

Tez gently pressed the carved stone.

Nothing happened.

He tried pushing harder.

Still nothing.

Naman looked around carefully.

"There must be a mechanism."

The boys searched every nearby stone.

Finally, Tez discovered a small iron ring hidden inside a narrow crack.

It was almost invisible beneath years of dust.

He pulled it gently.

A deep grinding sound echoed beneath the ground.

Slowly...

A section of the stone floor beside the well slid aside.

Cold air rushed upward from the darkness below.

Hidden beneath the village was a narrow staircase carved directly into the rock.

Naman whispered,

"So the stories were true."

Tez lifted the lamp.

"Stay close."

The staircase spiraled downward for several minutes.

The air became cooler and damp.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

Ancient stone walls surrounded them on every side.

It was clear that this tunnel had not been built recently.

Someone had created it hundreds of years ago.

Tez ran his fingers across the wall.

The stone was smooth despite its age.

"This wasn't made by ordinary villagers."

Naman nodded.

"The Guardians?"

"Perhaps."

The passage finally opened into a long underground corridor.

A narrow stream flowed beside the path.

Tez immediately understood.

"The village well is connected to this water."

Naman looked worried.

"If someone poisons this stream..."

"...the whole village becomes sick."

The boys carefully followed the underground stream.

Soon they noticed fresh footprints in the damp soil.

Some were made by sandals.

Others by leather boots.

At least four different people had passed through recently.

The footprints led deeper into the tunnel.

The friends extinguished their lamp.

Only a faint orange glow shone ahead.

Someone had lit a fire.

They slowly moved closer until voices became clear.

Hidden behind a large stone pillar, Tez carefully looked ahead.

Three masked men stood beside several clay jars.

One of them stirred a thick green liquid with a wooden stick.

Another poured the mixture into the flowing water.

Tez's stomach tightened.

The poison was entering the stream.

One masked man laughed.

"By tomorrow, the villagers won't even have the strength to leave their homes."

The second man shook his head.

"Our master gave clear instructions."

"Use only enough to weaken them."

"Not enough to kill."

The third looked confused.

"Why keep them alive?"

The first man smiled coldly.

"Because frightened people abandon their homes."

"And once Anandpur is empty..."

"...our master can search beneath it without interruption."

Tez and Naman exchanged shocked glances.

The illness had never been the true goal.

The villagers were simply obstacles.

The second masked man unrolled an old map.

He pointed toward a marked circle.

"The entrance should be somewhere beneath this village."

"The Raven believes the Guardians hid another passage here."

Tez's heart pounded.

The Raven was searching for another Guardian route.

Just as Acharya Vedant had feared.

The third man frowned.

"What if the boy arrives before we find it?"

The first man laughed confidently.

"He already has."

"But he doesn't know we're leading him exactly where our master wants him to go."

Tez felt a chill run down his spine.

"He knows I'm here..."

"Or at least... he expected me to come."

As the men continued talking, one of them removed a small bronze object from his belt.

It slipped from his hand and landed near the edge of the stream.

The men failed to notice.

A few moments later, they packed their jars and walked deeper into another tunnel.

Their footsteps slowly faded.

Tez waited until complete silence returned.

Only then did he step forward.

The bronze object lay partly buried in wet sand.

He picked it up carefully.

It was a beautifully crafted seal bearing the ancient emblem of the Black Eclipse.

Around its edge were tiny letters in Sanskrit.

Naman looked over his shoulder.

"What does it say?"

Tez studied the inscription.

"It means..."

'Darkness hides where light is forgotten.'

He wrapped the seal in a cloth and placed it inside his bag.

"This may help Acharya Vedant."

The boys prepared to leave.

Just as they turned around, Tez noticed something unusual on the opposite wall.

He lifted the lamp again.

Carved into the ancient stone was another symbol.

His breathing stopped.

It was exactly the same symbol engraved on the leather pouch that his father had entrusted with his life.

Unlike the others...

This carving was not faded.

It seemed almost... alive.

As Tez instinctively stepped closer, the leather pouch beneath his robe grew warm against his chest.

A faint golden glow shone through the cloth.

Naman stared in amazement.

"Tez..."

"The pouch..."

Before either of them could understand what was happening...

A loud voice echoed through the tunnel.

"Who's there?"

The masked men had returned.

The chase had begun.
