Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — A Place of Rest

I glanced at Rosalie from the corner of my eye, sighing in exasperation.

She was still in shock.

After the whole shit show, we'd boarded a train.

I stared at the landscape outside the window, the train rumbled softly, pulling me into a fleeting slumber.

A hand reached for me, I reacted before I could stop myself twisting her arm around.

"Ow. Ow. Ow." Rosalie shouted.

I released her immediately, shifting back.

She cradled her arm, trying to ease the pain.

"Are you stupid?" I asked, in anger. "I could've killed you."

She winced slightly, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."

I huffed in annoyance. "What is it?"

"I was wondering… where are we going?"

Shit…

I hadn't told her anything.

"We're going to lay low at a friend's place for now… until we hear from your parents or Steve."

She hummed in response.

"You should rest, it'll take a while before we reach our destination."

She nodded in understanding.

I turned back to the window deep in thoughts.

"My name is Rosalie—"

"I know, and you're not inclined to talk to me." I cut her off, closing my eyes.

*****

The rest of the ride passed in silence.

My muscles ached.

My legs sore.

All I needed was a night of rest.

I adjusted my bag over my shoulder stepping down from the train.

"Make sure the hood covers your face properly," I warned, striding forward. "They might be trying to keep things under the wraps but we don't know how many people already know your face."

She nodded, shifting the hood closer to her face.

We walked for a while in silence.

I occasionally glanced around to make sure we weren't being followed.

By the time we reached our destination, the sun had set already.

The wooden House gave this sense of peace, its warm golden light spilled onto the lake giving it an enchanting hue.

I knocked on the door and waited.

"Come in." A strained voice said.

I opened it, making sure to step in before Rosalie.

And as expected an arrow came whizzing past.

I stepped back letting it embed itself into the wood.

"Seriously, Evan. Isn't it high time you grew up from these schemes of yours."

"You brought a girl to my home?" He screeched.

I glanced at Rosalie, but she wasn't staring at me or Evan.

She was staring at the huge bear and monkey as they worked hand in hand carrying a box.

"What the hell is that?" She asked, eyes widened in shock.

"We're in a world of the gifted, how can you look so surprised?" Evan asked, coming to stand in front of her.

"Ohh… I mean, I don't go out much so… I haven't seen a lot of gifted people."

"Hmm… that explains it" he said, "well… my name's Evan, what's yours?" He asked, arm outstretched.

"Rosalie Demarco," she replied, taking his hand with a large smile.

Stupid girl.

Evan's eyes widened in surprise.

"You're the…" he stuttered, "the one and only Rosalie? The first user with two gifts?"

She recoiled, pulling her hand from his "yeah"

Evan turned to me.

"What the hell is going on dude?"

I exhaled, scratching my neck.

"Show her to one of the rooms Evan and fix up something for us to eat, I'll tell you everything later."

I ordered, walking towards my room.

I heard him talking to her as he led her to her room.

Just before I slammed my door shut.

....

After a long time in the shower, I came out of my room.

The animals around began setting the dishes.

"This is so cool…" Rosalie said, touching the animals shyly. "How do you get them to do all this?"

"I can talk to animals, that's my gift." Evan replied.

"Ohh… I wish I had something like this."

"Come on, don't flatter me too much. You're like the hottest cake in the whole world."

She scoffed. "And people are dying to weild me for it."

His face fell briefly, then lit up again.

"Don't worry, so long as you're with this asshole here, you're going to get through this." He grinned.

I rolled my eyes.

"So… what's up?" Evan asked, facing me.

And so I told him everything that had happened and that we just needed a place to lay low till I was able to get in touch with either Steve or Stone.

"I don't know Vince, I mean you're welcome to stay but…" he glanced at Rosalie from the corner of his eye.

She was busy petting a goose and it snuggled further into her touch.

"I think her parents and this Steve guy might be dead honestly." he whispered.

It had been on my mind.

A a probability I'd been trying not to admit until Evan said it.

"They're not." Rosalie said suddenly, drawing our attention to her.

"And how do you know that?" I asked.

"They're after me, you know. They won't be stupid enough to needlessly kill one of Russia's most famous businessmen. My father is a great asset to my country."

Depending on the situation, I would have agreed with her…

But the way things were going, I wasn't so sure about anything.

"Now that she puts it that way, it makes a bit of sense." Evan mused thoughtfully.

I nodded in mild agreement.

"One last thing Miss Demarco." I began drawing her attention to me. "From now on, till all this is over. Your name is Amy, I don't care what last name you pick."

She stared at me in confusion.

"Don't go around telling people you're Rosalie Demarco."

Her eyes widened in understanding.

"I just thought it was okay to tell him seeing as he's someone you trust."

"I never told you I trust him,"

"Come on dude—" Evan whined.

"—And besides, I'm not the one being hunted. Meaning, you have no reason to trust anyone."

I paused, letting the words sink in.

"Including me."

She stared at me for a long while, then nodded in understanding.

The good thing about her was how easy she listened.

Fine by me…

I didn't need some whiny bitch on my ass anyway.

I exhaled heavily, deciding to focus on my food instead.

I had a bad feeling about everything.

Who was I kidding?

It was the worst decision of my life taking the job anyway.

Funny… what being dirt broke could make a person agree to.
