CHAPTER 69 — THE ONE WHO WASN'T THERE
No one moved at first.
Because movement no longer meant the same thing.
Kelvin
Kelvin kept his eyes on Keira.
Not because she was closest—
but because she was the least stable.
"…Don't move," he said.
His voice felt steady.
But something about the moment felt delayed.
Keira
Keira nodded slowly.
"…I'm here."
But even as she said it—
Kelvin wasn't sure if he heard it when she said it.
System status
PERCEPTION DRIFT: INCREASING
VISUAL CONSISTENCY: UNSTABLE
Laura
Laura turned slightly.
"…Something's wrong," she said.
Kelvin frowned.
"What now?"
Laura didn't answer immediately.
She was staring at a spot beside them.
Kelvin follows her gaze
"What are you looking at?"
Laura spoke slowly:
"…Where did Nancy go?"
Silence
Kelvin turned immediately.
Nancy was just there.
She had been.
Right behind Laura.
Kelvin
"…Nancy?" he called.
No answer.
Kael
Kael scanned the room.
Precise. Focused.
"…She is not visible," he said.
Kelvin stepped back.
"…No. She's here."
System escalation
ENTITY VISIBILITY: DESYNCHRONIZED
PARTIAL PERCEPTION LOSS CONFIRMED
Keira reacts
Keira looked around quickly.
"…I can't see her either," she whispered.
Kelvin shook his head.
"No. No, she was just here."
Laura confusion
Laura frowned deeply.
"…I was talking to her."
A pause.
"…Wasn't I?"
Kelvin panic rising
"…Nancy!" Kelvin shouted.
Nothing.
No response.
No movement.
No trace.
Kael explains
Kael spoke calmly, but his tone was sharper now.
"She has not disappeared."
Kelvin turned.
"…Then where is she?!"
Kael answered:
"She has been removed from our perception layer."
Silence.
Kelvin struggles to understand
"…So she's still here…"
A pause.
"…but we can't see her?"
Kael nodded.
"Correct."
Keira fear
Keira stepped slightly closer to Kelvin.
"…That means it can happen to any of us," she whispered.
No one argued.
Because that was the truth.
System message
ISOLATION PHASE: DEEPENING
ENTITY SEPARATION: PROGRESSING
Laura tries logic
"…Okay," Laura said, forcing herself to stay calm.
"If she's still here… then she might still see us."
Kelvin turned.
"…Nancy?"
Still nothing.
Shift in perspective (Nancy — unknown to others)
Somewhere in the same room—
Nancy stood still.
"…Why are you all ignoring me?" she said.
Her voice echoed slightly.
Kelvin, Laura, Keira, Kael—
they were all there.
Standing.
Looking around.
Calling her name.
But none of them were looking at her.
Nancy realization
"…No," she whispered.
She stepped forward.
"I'm right here."
She waved her hand in front of Kelvin.
No reaction.
Back to Kelvin
Kelvin ran a hand through his hair.
"…This is bad."
Kael corrected:
"This is expected."
Kelvin snapped slightly.
"…Stop saying that!"
Keira breaking point
Keira shook her head.
"…I don't like this," she whispered.
"…I don't like not knowing who's real anymore."
System pressure
PERCEPTION ISOLATION SUCCESS: 1 ENTITY
NEXT TARGET: PENDING
Kelvin realization
Kelvin froze.
"…Next target?"
He looked at the others.
"…It's not done."
Final moment
Nancy stood among them—
unseen.
Unheard.
Completely present—
and completely alone.
Kelvin looked around desperately.
Laura stayed tense.
Keira held onto the last bit of certainty she had.
Kael remained still—but more alert than before.
And the system continued silently:
Not removing them.
Not destroying them.
Just making sure…
they could no longer reach each other.
