Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5 : THE VERSION THAT CAME BEFORE

Kelvin didn't move.

His hand was still pressed against the glass.

Inside the chamber, Aisha's fingers had moved—just slightly—but enough to shatter whatever control he thought he still had.

"She moved," he said quietly.

Laura nodded once. "She responds to presence."

Aysha stepped closer, her voice trembling slightly. "You mean… she can hear us?"

Laura shook her head. "Not hear. Recognize."

Kelvin's eyes stayed fixed on Aisha. "Recognize what?"

Laura answered without hesitation.

"You."

Silence fell over the room.

Kelvin's breathing slowed, but not from calm—from focus.

"Aisha…" he said again, softer this time.

The lights around the chamber flickered.

A faint pulse moved across the glass like a wave.

Aysha stepped back. "Okay, that's not normal."

Laura's eyes narrowed slightly. "The system is reacting."

Kelvin turned. "What system?"

Laura gestured around the room. "This entire facility. It monitors responses between linked subjects."

Kelvin frowned. "Linked how?"

Laura hesitated.

Then said it clearly:

"Emotionally. Mentally. Memory-based."

Kelvin looked back at Aisha.

"Because we're twins?"

Laura didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Yes… but not just that."

Kelvin's expression hardened. "Then what else?"

Laura took a slow breath.

"The experiment wasn't just about twins."

Aysha frowned. "Then what was it about?"

Laura looked at both of them.

"Replication."

A pause.

Kelvin's voice dropped. "Replication of what?"

Laura's answer came quietly.

"Identity."

The word hung in the air like something dangerous.

Aysha shook her head. "That doesn't make sense."

Laura stepped closer to the chamber. "They were trying to prove that a person's identity can exist in more than one place… if the connection is strong enough."

Kelvin stared at her. "That's impossible."

Laura met his gaze. "That's what they were testing."

A faint sound interrupted them.

A soft mechanical hum.

Kelvin turned slightly.

A screen on the wall flickered to life.

Lines of data began scrolling rapidly.

Then—

A video feed appeared.

Grainy.

Distorted.

But clear enough.

Kelvin froze.

Because the person on the screen…

was him.

Aysha gasped. "That's—you."

But it wasn't exactly him.

The boy on the screen looked the same.

Same face.

Same eyes.

But his expression—

Different.

Colder.

Empty.

The recording showed him standing in this same room.

In front of the same chamber.

Laura whispered, "This is previous data."

Kelvin's voice was tight. "When was this recorded?"

Laura looked at the corner of the screen.

"Three months ago."

Silence.

Aysha shook her head immediately. "No. That's not possible."

Kelvin didn't speak.

He couldn't.

Because the version of him on the screen stepped closer to the chamber—

And said something.

The audio crackled.

Then cleared.

"…Aisha, can you hear me?"

Kelvin's breath stopped.

It was his voice.

Exactly.

The same tone.

The same rhythm.

But he had never said those words.

The video continued.

Aisha inside the chamber moved again.

More than before.

Her head tilted slightly.

Like she was trying to respond.

Then—

Alarms blared in the recording.

Red lights flashed.

The version of Kelvin turned sharply.

Guards rushed into the room.

The footage cut.

The screen went black.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Aysha was the first to break.

"This… this doesn't make sense. You weren't here three months ago."

Kelvin finally moved.

One step back.

Then another.

"I don't remember this," he said quietly.

Laura nodded.

"I know."

Kelvin looked at her sharply. "Then explain it."

Laura's expression didn't change.

"That wasn't your current memory."

Kelvin's voice rose slightly. "Then whose was it?"

Laura answered:

"Yours."

Silence.

Aysha whispered, "So… there are two of him?"

Laura shook her head.

"Not two."

She looked at Kelvin.

"Versions."

Kelvin clenched his fists. "Stop talking like that."

Laura didn't stop.

"The experiment resets failed subjects."

Kelvin's voice dropped dangerously low. "What does that mean?"

Laura held his gaze.

"It means when a version fails… they erase the memory and start again."

Aysha took a step back. "That's insane…"

Kelvin's chest tightened.

"Then I failed?"

Laura didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Yes."

The word hit harder than anything else.

Kelvin turned away, running a hand through his hair. "No… no, that doesn't make sense."

Laura spoke carefully. "You came here before. You found her before."

Kelvin's voice shook slightly. "Then why don't I remember?"

Laura's answer was simple.

"Because you weren't meant to."

A faint sound came from the chamber again.

Kelvin turned back immediately.

Aisha's eyes—

Moved.

Not fully open.

But shifting.

Like she was trying.

Kelvin stepped forward quickly. "Aisha—"

The lights flickered violently.

The screen on the wall glitched.

Then new text appeared:

ECHO LINK STABILITY: UNSTABLE

SUBJECT RECOGNITION: INCREASING

RESET PROTOCOL: STANDBY

Laura's expression changed instantly.

"That's not good."

Aysha panicked slightly. "What does that mean?!"

Laura stepped forward, reading the screen quickly.

"It means the system is detecting a reconnection."

Kelvin frowned. "Isn't that what we want?"

Laura shook her head. "Not like this."

Kelvin's voice sharpened. "Explain."

Laura turned to him.

"If the connection becomes too strong too quickly… the system will force another reset."

Silence.

Kelvin's heart dropped.

"Reset… me?"

Laura nodded once.

Aysha grabbed his arm. "We need to leave."

But Kelvin didn't move.

He looked at Aisha.

Then at the screen.

Then back at Laura.

"What happens if I don't leave?"

Laura didn't hesitate.

"You lose everything you've remembered… and start over again."

Kelvin's jaw tightened.

"And her?"

Laura looked at Aisha.

"She stays."

A long pause.

Kelvin made his decision.

"I'm not leaving."

Aysha's eyes widened. "Kelvin—"

He shook his head.

"I already lost her once."

His voice dropped.

"I'm not losing her again."

Laura stared at him.

Then said quietly:

"Then you need to be ready for what comes next."

Kelvin looked at her. "What is that?"

Laura's answer came with no hesitation.

"You face the version of yourself that already failed."

The room went silent.

The lights dimmed slightly.

And somewhere deeper in the facility—

something activated.
