Chapter 113 - 113: The Hunter and the Prey

Several kilometres from the hell of the Imperial preparations, deep within Falus Forest as it coiled in silence as though holding its breath, the scene was entirely different. At the highest accessible point, on a sturdy branch of a colossal oak tree more than a thousand years old, jutting out like an ancient sentinel over the sprawling valley below, a pair of eyes watched everything in absolute stillness.

Dex Williams crouched on his right knee, both hands braced steadily against the rough, peeling bark of the ancient tree. He wore dark clothing that melted into the shadows, yet his inner energy churned like a raging sea. He drew a deep breath, directing the mana through his body toward his eyes, and activated the Phoenix Sight ability with total and unwavering concentration.

In that instant, the features of his human eyes vanished, iris and pupil dissolved alike, and both eyes transformed entirely into two blazing golden flames, pulsing with life. His vision was no longer confined to light and physical reflection; his gaze pierced the veils of distance, transcending mist and darkness. Before him, the world became a complex canvas of mana lines and energy. He saw the dense blue mana flowing from the Imperial encampment with complete clarity, flowing like rivers of light through the darkness of the night, as though he were observing the camp in broad daylight from only a few metres away.

He saw every detail with terrifying precision: the sorcerers' geometric arrays pumping energy to dispel the forest's mist, thousands of soldiers moving like cogs in a massive machine, and the heavy carriages loaded with steel cannons. But above all else, most striking and commanding of attention, was that dreadful blue aura, simultaneously violent and steady, that enveloped the General's command tent. An aura resembling a storm imprisoned in glass, the aura of a Rank A+ pinnacle.

As a former reader of this story, as someone who knew every letter inscribed in this world before being forced to live within it, Dex knew precisely who owned this aura. He knew the man's past, his capabilities, and the ending written for him in the original text.

"Vargas…" Dex whispered, his voice blending with the rustling of leaves and the cold wind toying with his loose hair. "The Falcon's Eye. You are a great soldier, there is no doubting that. Your discipline is flawless, your loyalty absolute, and your physical and magical power is genuinely formidable. In other circumstances, you would have been an opponent calculated into every plan."

A cryptic smile settled on Dex's lips, not the smile of fear, nor even of tension. It was the smile of someone who sees the entire chessboard while his opponent stares only at a single piece. "But you are committing the greatest and most foolish mistake of your military life, General. You have brought a regular army, with classical rules of engagement and conventional war plans, to face a prisoner sentenced to death, a man who no longer has anything to lose, walking against the current of fate itself."

Dex tightened his grip on the tree bark until it cracked. "You believe you are coming to an open battlefield where the advantage belongs to numbers and weaponry. But in truth, in all your arrogance, you are driving your men into a bloody prison riot inside a giant jail with no walls. The laws here are not dictated by the Empire. They are dictated by desperation and fire."

Dex closed his eyes for a moment to ease the spiritual strain, then turned slowly to his companion. Lumia stood beside him on the edge of the slender branch with an impossible balance that defied the laws of gravity, as though she were a feather with no weight. She wore the flowing garments of the Elf and gazed at the distant sprawling army with an expression that was cold, glacial, and completely devoid of feeling, as though those five thousand armoured soldiers were nothing more than an army of ants already condemned to be trampled.

"Are you ready, Lumia?" Dex asked, his voice recovering its lethal calm. "They have seen some of our traps, and they are coming in their arrogance to crush them. The forest will open its jaws and begin eating their army alive."

Lumia gave a single slow, deliberate nod, a subtle shift in her silver hair following the motion. She did not speak, she let her power speak for her. A concentrated, luminous silver radiance appeared in her right hand, and her slender fingers began moving through the air like a master harpist performing. Yet she was playing no melody, she was manipulating the folds of the spatial dimensions surrounding her. The air around her hand began to warp and bend visibly, as though she were kneading the very fabric of reality.

"I will fold the earth beneath them, Dex," said Lumia in a voice that was quiet and clear, yet carrying a terrifying and irreversible certainty. "I will turn Falus's terrain into a horrifying labyrinth with no exit. They will believe they are advancing steadily forward toward their supposed victory, but they will find themselves walking in circles, moving directly into the heart of the hell you have built. They will lose their sense of direction. They will lose their minds. Then they will lose their souls."

Dex rose fully upright and closed his Phoenix-blazing eyes completely, drawing one last breath of the cold and crisp night air. He knew this clean air would soon be irrevocably contaminated. Soon, it would mingle with the smell of hot blood, burning flesh, gunpowder dust, and the screams of broken men.

"Let us return to the village," said Dex, leaping with agility and absolute silence into the dense shadows of the lower branches. "The traps are hungry, and the furious guests are at the gates."

And as Dex and Lumia vanished like ghosts into the darkness of the ancient forest to rejoin their diminutive army of rebel Elf, General Vargas stood in his illuminated tent before his map, raising a fresh cup of wine and swearing beneath the cold moonlight that he would crush everything dark and rebellious in this forest. Vargas saw himself as a wise hunter pursuing cornered prey, unaware, with tragic finality, that a legendary Phoenix awaited him among the trees, fully prepared to reduce him, his arrogance, and his entire army to a pile of ash.
