Chapter 102 - 102: The Covenant of Shared Fate

Several long and heavy minutes passed, minutes that felt like hours, before Lumia began gradually reining in her Void Aura and drawing it back into her slender body, pulling her hood forward to return herself to shadow. As that terrifying cosmic pressure retreated, air rushed sharply back into the lungs of the Dark Elf warriors concealed among the branches. Loud gasping was heard, violent coughing, and the scrape of weapons being returned to their sheaths by trembling hands.

Okonnor and his elite soldiers recovered their composure with painful slowness. Yet the atmosphere of the suspended village had changed entirely, and perhaps permanently. Dex Williams and the enigmatic girl Lumia were no longer merely intruding trespassers caught in a trap, to be interrogated and then executed or have their families extorted. In the eyes of the Dark Elf, they had become terrifying guests, disasters walking on two legs, to be handled, accommodated, and negotiated with extreme caution, the way one walks barefoot across a field of poisoned broken glass.

Okonnor moved slowly toward an old, battered wooden crate that served as a map table in the corner of the platform. He lowered himself onto it with a strange heaviness. Suddenly, the mask of the "unbreakable general" slipped away, and exhaustion settled plainly over his features, as though the full weight of his one hundred years of warfare had abruptly remembered itself and come to roost on his shoulders all at once.

"If this girl… this celestial catastrophe… stands willingly at your side and protects you, then your destiny, and whatever you carry in your arsenal, is far greater and far more dangerous than I imagined, Williams," said Okonnor in a quiet, spent voice, pulling off his metal gauntlets and pressing both roughened hands against his pale, lined face. "I have revised every tactical calculation I possessed in these past few minutes. An alliance with the disowned heir of House Williams may not be the suicidal madness I initially took it to be. On the contrary, and what bitter irony fate serves, it may be the only lifeline my people have against certain annihilation."

Dex exhaled slowly and silently, keeping his expression rigid. The gamble had paid off. Lumia's power had provided him the diplomatic bridge he needed. But before he could begin drafting the terms of the alliance and securing the nectar, Okonnor raised his head, and in his eyes sat a deep grief, the grief of a commander watching the end of his nation approach.

"But… as is always the case in this cursed world, there is one fatal problem," said Okonnor, his tone stripped of all political cunning. "You are asking for the Nectar of the World Tree. The problem, Dex, is that this nectar is not mine to give. I am not a guardian standing over a treasure locked in a vault. The nectar is, in truth, the very heart of this village."

Okonnor gestured toward the massive trunk of the tree on which they stood. "This diminutive World Tree is dying. It was poisoned and corrupted in the ancient war. The nectar is its final magical secretion, the pulsing artery that keeps this tree alive, and it is the sole source that generates the Silver Illusion Mist, the veil that conceals our village from the eyes of the Empire and the scouts of the nobility. To give it to you, even a single pure drop capable of healing your father, means draining the tree's energy. That will cause the mist to dissolve, collapse our defences entirely, and lay my people bare."

Dex swallowed. The original account had never mentioned this particular detail. He had assumed the nectar was simply a magical medicine stored in a glass vial that Okonnor kept on his person. Now he was asking a commander to sacrifice his people's shield in order to save his father.

Okonnor rose slowly and walked toward an old leather map, one that radiated the faint scent of magic, hanging on the tree's main trunk. "And worse than all of that… we do not have the luxury of sitting here to negotiate alternative solutions or search for some magical equilibrium that might compensate for the nectar's absence."

Okonnor pressed a rough finger to the map. It was no ordinary map, it was a Living Mana Chart, where concentrations of energy appeared as luminous blotches. Along the western edges of the Dark Forest, a massive red point throbbed with accelerating urgency, surging toward the centre like a tide of blood.

"My shadow-bird scouts confirmed this dreadful intelligence at dawn today. I was preparing to declare a state of maximum emergency when you fell into my snare," said Okonnor, fixing Dex with a lethal seriousness. "The Imperial Army, acting on direct orders from either your uncle Silvester or from the Shadow Organisation that pulls his strings, has not contented itself with sending mercenary battalions or bounty hunters, as they did in the decades past. Those were merely skirmishes, a probing of our defences."

Okonnor tapped the red point on the map. "What you see here is the Sixth Elite Legion, the legendary military formation known as the Falcons of Visus. They breached the cursed borders of the Vhalus Forest hours ago. They are not advancing with caution, they are sweeping through everything. They are closing in on the danger zone, on the immediate perimeter of our village, as we speak."

Dex's eyes widened with genuine shock. "The Sixth Elite Legion? That legion never deploys except under direct Imperial order to guard the capital itself! This is a full-scale military offensive, an open declaration of war! My uncle is wasting no time… he wants every old loose end sealed before he seizes command."

"Precisely, boy," said Okonnor, his voice filling with the bitterness of despair. "Five thousand armoured infantry clad in heavy enchanted plate, supported by a full battalion of war-mages who specialise in wide-range fire destruction, and hauled forward by armoured beasts pulling siege engines designed specifically for ripping forests from the earth. They have discovered our location, or are converging on our coordinates, most likely with the aid of stolen maps or intelligence from the Shadow Organisation you mentioned."

Okonnor picked his cracked helmet up from the floor and stared into it. "They are not coming to take prisoners. They are not coming to intimidate us. They are coming for total extermination. They intend to burn the World Tree and erase the Dark Elf from the face of this earth."

Dex grasped the full scale of the catastrophe that had just avalanched over his head. Every thread of his fate had converged at a single, lethal point in time. If the Dark Elf village fell, Okonnor would die and his people would be annihilated. If they died, the Nectar would burn with the tree, and the antidote would be lost. If the antidote was lost, his father Marcus would die of the poison. If his father died, Silvester and the Shadow Organisation would rule the West unchallenged, and Dex himself would be finished, a fugitive surviving less than a week.

The equation had become clear, bloody, and impossible: to obtain the cure that would save his father, Dex Williams would have to stand today, with his Rank D body, alongside Lumia and Okonnor, and fight an entire Imperial army of five thousand soldiers and war-mages, now marching toward them to burn everything down.
