Three folders arrive from Gerald's lawyers. The men seem relieved that someone finally asked for them.
I spread the papers on my desk and started reading. I found records of old family shares from eleven years ago. On the third page, I find an important rule: people who own these shares have the right to check the company's private accounts every year.
I read it twice, then stood by the window to think.
I think about the Obsidian Building, a tall tower of black glass. The company's computer servers are on the fourteenth floor. I know this because I read it in a book before I lived this story.
The book didn't tell me much. It mentioned a big financial secret around chapter eighty, but then the author just stopped writing about it. Instead of a mystery, the story became about Vivienne doing chores and loving a man who ignored her. The secret was never explained.
