Chapter 3: The Shattered Peace
I. The Call That Changed Everything
The payphone was on the corner of Fifth and Madison.
She had walked past it every day for two years. She had never used it. She had never needed to. Hopper's visits were scheduled, predictable, safe. She was not supposed to call. That was one of the rules. No contact except through him, on his timeline, on his terms.
She stood in front of it now at eleven at night with her hands in her jacket pockets and the Seattle wind moving through her hair, and she thought about the ash on the backs of her hands, and she picked up the receiver.
She fed quarters in until the machine was satisfied.
She dialed.
It rang twice.
"Yeah." His voice was rough. She had woken him up.
She opened her mouth. Nothing came out.
"Hello? Who is this?"
She pressed her forehead against the cold metal of the payphone. She closed her eyes. Her throat was locked. She had not spoken to him outside of his visits in two years and now that she had him on the line the words were stuck somewhere behind her sternum, jammed there by the same fear that had been sitting in her chest since she ripped off the blindfold and watched the ash fall.
"El." His voice changed. Lower. "El, is that you?"
"Hop." Her voice came out wrong. Too thin. Shaking at the edges. "Hop, he's not gone."
Silence.
"And he has Billy."
She heard him breathe. Once. Slow and deliberate, the way he breathed when he was trying not to react. She had seen him do it in person a hundred times. One breath, hands flat on the table, processing.
"El, listen to me. You've been alone for a long time and sometimes the Void can—"
"I know what I saw." She said it quietly. She was not angry. She was past angry. "Hop. I know."
Another silence. Longer.
"He called me Princess," she said. "Billy. In the Void. That was his word for me. Only his."
She heard him stand up. She heard the floor creak under his weight.
"The cabin," he said. "How fast can you get there?"
"Two days. Maybe less."
"I'll make some calls." A pause. "El. Be careful on the road."
She hung up.
She stood at the payphone for a moment with her hand still on the receiver. Around her the city moved, indifferent, lit up, busy with the business of people who did not know what lived in the dark between worlds. She watched a cab go past. A couple walking a dog. A man eating a hot dog outside a closed bodega.
She picked up her bag and walked to the bus station.
II. The Secret Reunion
She reached the treeline at two in the morning.
The cab had taken her as far as the county road would allow. She had walked the rest. The forest was dark and cold and familiar in a way that was not comforting. She had spent enough time in woods like these to know that familiarity was not the same as safety.
She saw the flashlight before she saw him.
He was standing at the edge of the trees, one hand in his jacket pocket, the flashlight pointed at the ground. He looked older. Not a lot, but enough. The lines around his eyes were deeper. His hat was pulled low. He was watching the tree line, and when she stepped out of it he exhaled slowly and the tension in his shoulders dropped about three inches.
He crossed the distance between them. He put his arms around her.
She stood very still for a moment. Then she pressed her face against his shoulder and held on.
Neither of them said anything.
He stepped back and looked at her. His face did the thing it always did when he was taking inventory, making sure all the pieces were present and accounted for. He put one hand on the side of her head briefly, then let go.
"You look tired," he said.
"I'm fine."
"I know. You're always fine." He turned toward the cabin. "Come on."
The cabin was dark from the outside. She could hear voices inside, low and overlapping. Hopper had moved fast. She stopped walking for a moment at the bottom of the porch steps, her hand on the railing, and looked at the front door.
"They don't know yet," Hopper said from beside her. "Just that it's Code Red. I didn't tell them you were coming."
She nodded.
She went up the steps. She opened the door.
The room went quiet immediately, the way rooms go quiet when something unexpected happens. They were all there. Joyce on the couch with her hands around a coffee mug, still wearing her work clothes. Will beside her, arms crossed, the particular stillness in his face that she recognized as him trying not to feel something. Dustin standing at the kitchen counter with a notebook open. Lucas with his arms folded and his jaw tight. And Mike.
Mike was standing by the window.
He looked at her. She looked at him.
For a moment nobody moved.
Then Dustin said, in a voice that was approximately forty percent louder than necessary, "Oh my god."
"Hey, Dustin," she said.
He crossed the room in four steps and put his arms around her with the indiscriminate enthusiasm of a person who had never learned to suppress his reactions. She let him. Over his shoulder she watched Mike. He had not moved from the window. His expression was complicated. Happy and hurt and something else she could not read from across the room.
When Dustin let go she walked toward Mike.
He looked at her the way people look at things they are not sure are real.
"Two years," he said. His voice was careful. Flat in the way that flat voices are flat because the alternative is the opposite of flat.
"I know."
"You were in Seattle."
"Yes."
"The whole time."
"Mike." She said his name and held eye contact and put everything she did not have time to say into both. He looked at her and she watched him make a decision. The hurt went somewhere else, not gone but relocated, filed under later, not now.
He nodded.
"Okay," he said. "What happened?"
She turned to face the room.
"Sit down," she said. "All of you."
III. The Revelation
She stood in the middle of the cabin and told them.
She told them about the radio. The blindfold. The Void and how it had changed, how the edges felt different lately, less empty, more watched. She told them about Mike in the basement, about the walkie-talkie, about the static that would not let her through. She watched Mike go very still when she said that and she kept going.
She told them about the temperature drop.
She told them about the engine.
She told them about the voice.
When she said the word Princess, Joyce set her coffee mug down on the side table. Will looked at the floor. Lucas looked at Dustin. Dustin was writing something in his notebook with the focused, rapid energy of a person whose brain had just shifted into a higher gear.
"And then the ash," she said. "It was falling inside my room. Black ash. Like the Upside Down was pushing through."
Silence.
Dustin looked up from his notebook. He held up one finger.
"I have to say something."
"Dustin," Lucas said.
"No, seriously, somebody has to say it." He turned the notebook around. He had drawn a rough diagram with arrows and labels. "Vecna is dead. We watched the house. The demo-bats, the Mind Flayer, all of it collapsed. We had the music, we had the gates closing, we watched him turn to ash. Literally. Ash." He pointed at El. "The ash in your room. That's not Vecna. That can't be Vecna."
El said nothing.
"It could be a residual. It could be the Hive Mind still degrading. It could be a lot of things that aren't Vecna being alive and somehow getting Billy back." He set the notebook down. His voice had gone from argumentative to something quieter. "Because that would be really, really bad."
The room was quiet again.
Will's hand moved.
It went to the back of his neck. Slowly, without seeming to decide to. His fingers pressed against the skin there. He stared at nothing.
"Will," Joyce said.
He looked up. He seemed momentarily surprised to be in the room.
"I felt it," he said. "A few weeks ago. I thought it was..." He paused. "I've had the phantom pain before. After Hawkins. Cold, and the neck thing, and this feeling like something is paying attention. I told myself it was residual. PTSD or something." He looked at El. "But it hasn't stopped."
Nobody said anything.
Dustin sat down slowly on the edge of the counter.
IV. The Why and the How
"Okay." Dustin steepled his fingers. He did this when he was thinking hard, when the pieces were coming together whether he wanted them to or not. "Okay. Let's work through this."
"Dustin, maybe now isn't—" Lucas started.
"No, we need to think. That's what we do, we think, and if we stop thinking we lose." He pointed at the ceiling. "First question: how is Vecna alive? El killed him. She hit him with everything she had. We saw it."
"His body," El said. "I destroyed his body."
Dustin looked at her.
"You think his consciousness was somewhere else."
"The Hive Mind is big," she said. "It's everywhere in the Upside Down. When I fought him I was only in one place. He could have... pulled back. Hidden himself in the network." She looked at Will. "Like he hid in Will."
Will nodded. Once. Small.
"So we're talking about something that has been sitting in the Hive Mind for two years," Dustin said. Slowly. Working it out. "Rebuilding. Regrouping. Waiting." He pressed his lips together. "That is the most terrifying thing I have ever said out loud and I have said some genuinely terrifying things out loud."
"Why Billy?" Mike asked. His voice was quiet but he was fully present now, standing at the table with his arms crossed, the particular focus on his face that El remembered from every campaign, every plan, every crisis. "Billy is dead. He's been dead for two years. Why not someone else, why not—"
"Because of me," El said.
Everyone looked at her.
"Billy was Flayed before he died. Vecna was already inside his mind. And before he died, Billy was inside mine." She said it plainly. It was old pain. She had had two years to learn to say it plainly. "He saw things I felt. He touched things that were mine. That connection doesn't fully break just because one person dies."
"A bridge," Dustin said.
"Yes."
"Between here and the Upside Down. Between you and Vecna." He picked up his pen. "Billy is the anchor. He can exist in the real world because he was real once. He can find you because he already found you once." He wrote something, underlined it twice. "And Vecna can reach through him."
"Like a puppet," Lucas said.
"Not exactly a puppet," Dustin said. "More like a..." He paused. "A key. Shaped specifically for one lock."
The fire in the fireplace crackled. Outside, the forest was quiet in the way that forests are quiet when something is listening.
V. The Horrifying Realization
"So what do we do," Joyce said.
It wasn't really a question. It was the thing that came after all the other things. After the explaining and the theorizing and the working out, the thing that waited at the end of all of it, patient and non-negotiable.
What do we do.
Nobody answered immediately. El looked at Mike. Mike looked at the table.
"We don't even know what we're working with yet," Lucas said. "Our resources are..." He looked around the room. "A cabin. A flashlight. And whatever's left of El's powers."
"My powers came back," El said. "Partially. It took time. But they're not what they were."
"Partially," Mike repeated.
"Enough. I think." She met his eyes. "I don't know how enough."
Dustin stood up. He had his notebook against his chest.
"What exactly did Billy say to you," he said. "In the Void. Exactly."
El was quiet for a moment.
"He said he was coming," she said. "He said—" She stopped. She looked at Mike. Then back at Dustin. "He said he was coming for the boy."
The room followed her gaze.
Every person in it looked at Mike.
Mike did not move. He held very still, the way people hold still when they are processing the specific and unpleasant sensation of understanding that a threat is not abstract, that it is pointed, that it has a name, and the name is yours.
"Okay," he said. Quietly. "Okay."
Outside the cabin, something moved.
El saw it first. She was closest to the window and her eyes went to it before anyone else's did. A light. Two lights. Coming through the trees on the far side of the road, moving slowly, cutting through the darkness between the pines.
Headlights.
She stood up.
The engine was a low growl. She knew it the way you know a voice you were hoping never to hear again. Deep. Rolling. Patient.
She said: "Hopper."
He was already at the window.
The Blue Camaro sat at the edge of the treeline, its headlights burning, its engine idling. Just sitting there. Waiting. The headlights swept across the cabin window and for one second, one single second, they lit up the room.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Outside, the engine idled on.
