Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5 : Taking Control

The next morning, Lin Xue arrived at the office earlier than usual.

The building was quiet, almost empty. Only a few employees had arrived, and most of the lights were still off. The hallway felt calm, with only the soft echo of her footsteps as she walked in.

She didn't hesitate.

This place was familiar to her.

Every corner.

Every system.

Every small routine.

In her previous life, she had spent long hours here, solving problems, organizing work, and making sure everything moved forward without mistakes. Back then, she never stopped to think about how much she was doing.

Now, she understood clearly.

When she reached Zhao Chen's office, the door was slightly open.

She knocked lightly before pushing it open.

Zhao Chen was already inside.

He was sitting at his desk, looking at his laptop, but he didn't look as relaxed as usual. There was a faint tension in his face, and his desk was not as neat as it normally was.

He looked up when he saw her.

"You're early," he said.

"You asked me to come early," Lin Xue replied.

Her tone was calm and natural.

Zhao Chen nodded. "The file is still missing."

"I'll check," she said.

She walked in and sat down at his desk without asking.

He didn't stop her.

Instead, he shifted slightly to the side, giving her space.

It was a small movement.

But it showed trust.

Lin Xue opened the laptop.

Her fingers moved across the keyboard with quiet confidence.

She checked the folders one by one.

Then the backup files.

Then the system history.

Her movements were smooth and steady, without hesitation.

Zhao Chen stood beside her, watching closely.

At first, his expression was serious.

Then slowly, it began to ease.

Because this was familiar to him.

This was how things had always worked.

Whenever there was a problem—

she solved it.

After a few minutes, Lin Xue paused.

"I think I found it," she said.

Zhao Chen stepped closer. "Where?"

"It was moved into another folder," she replied. "It can happen if the file is edited quickly."

Her explanation was simple.

Logical.

Zhao Chen didn't question it.

"Open it," he said.

She clicked.

The file appeared.

Complete.

Untouched.

Exactly as it should be.

Zhao Chen let out a breath.

"That's it," he said.

The tension in his voice faded.

Lin Xue opened the file and checked it briefly.

"Everything is fine," she said. "Nothing is missing."

Zhao Chen looked at her for a moment. "Good."

Then he added, "I knew you could handle it."

It sounded like praise.

But it also sounded like something he expected.

Lin Xue gave a small nod. "It's nothing."

She didn't explain anything.

She didn't need to.

The result was enough.

"Can you stay and help me prepare for the next meeting?" Zhao Chen asked.

His tone was casual.

But there was something different in it now.

Less certainty.

More reliance.

Zhao Chen didn't realize it, but he had already stopped trying to fix things on his own.

Lin Xue noticed it clearly.

"Alright," she said.

They worked together for the next few hours.

Lin Xue organized the data carefully. She corrected small errors that Zhao Chen hadn't noticed and adjusted the structure of the presentation.

Zhao Chen followed her suggestions without questioning them.

Sometimes he would stop and ask, "Does this look right?"

He didn't check it himself.

He waited for her answer.

Or, "Should we change this part?"

He didn't even realize he was doing it.

But Lin Xue noticed.

Every time.

The control had already begun to shift.

At one point, Zhao Chen leaned back in his chair and looked at her.

"You've been really helpful lately," he said.

Lin Xue didn't look up from the screen. "I've always helped."

She remembered staying late in this office, waiting for him to finish meetings, fixing problems he didn't even notice.

Back then, she thought it was normal.

Now, it felt different.

She paused for a second after saying it.

She had said those words many times before.

In her previous life, she never thought about them.

Now, she understood what they meant.

She had always helped.

And he had always taken it for granted.

Around noon, there was a knock on the door.

"Come in," Zhao Chen said.

The door opened.

Liu Yuer walked in.

She looked calm and well-dressed, just like yesterday. Her expression was soft, her movements steady.

"I hope I'm not interrupting," she said.

"Not at all," Zhao Chen replied.

Lin Xue looked up briefly.

Their eyes met.

Just for a second.

Then Lin Xue looked back at the screen.

Liu Yuer stepped inside and glanced at the desk.

"You're busy," she said.

"Preparing for the next meeting," Zhao Chen replied.

Liu Yuer nodded, then looked at Lin Xue again.

"You came early."

"Yes," Lin Xue replied.

"You're very dedicated," Liu Yuer said with a light smile.

Then she added, "You seem more… capable than I expected."

Her tone sounded casual.

But her gaze stayed a little longer.

As if she was trying to understand something.

Lin Xue didn't react.

She continued working, her movements calm and steady.

But she noticed everything.

Every word.

Every look.

"Do you need help?" Liu Yuer asked.

Zhao Chen shook his head. "We're almost done."

"We?" Liu Yuer repeated lightly.

Zhao Chen didn't notice anything strange.

But Lin Xue did.

"It's mostly her work," Zhao Chen added.

He said it casually.

Without thinking.

But those words changed something.

Even if only slightly.

Liu Yuer's smile didn't disappear.

But it became thinner.

"I see," she said.

Her voice was still soft.

But not as light as before.

Lin Xue saved the file and closed the laptop.

"It's ready," she said.

Zhao Chen nodded. "Good."

He looked relieved.

More relaxed than before.

Liu Yuer watched quietly.

That same feeling returned.

Something was different.

She couldn't explain it.

But she could feel it clearly now.

Lin Xue looked calm.

Too calm.

"I'll get some coffee," Liu Yuer said.

"Bring one for me," Zhao Chen replied.

She smiled. "Of course."

Then she left the room.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

Zhao Chen leaned back slightly. "That went smoothly."

Lin Xue nodded.

"Yes."

Because she made sure it did.

After a moment, Zhao Chen said, "I don't know what I would have done yesterday without you."

Lin Xue looked at him.

Her expression was calm.

"You would have managed," she said.

But both of them knew—

that wasn't completely true.

When Lin Xue left the office, the day felt normal.

The sky was clear.

People moved as usual.

Nothing seemed different.

But something had already changed.

Zhao Chen had started depending on her again.

Without realizing it.

That evening, Lin Xue sat in her room with her laptop open.

The same file was on the screen.

She looked at it carefully.

Line by line.

Number by number.

Then she adjusted one number slightly.

Just enough to pass unnoticed.

Just enough to cause a problem later.

A change so small that it wouldn't be noticed immediately.

Nothing obvious.

Nothing dangerous at first glance.

But later—

it would matter.

Her fingers paused for a moment.

Then she saved the file.

Closed the laptop.

And leaned back slightly.

She didn't rush.

She didn't feel excited.

Everything was calm.

Controlled.

This time, she wasn't fixing his mistakes.

She was creating them.
