Chapter 95 - chapter Ninety-Five: Thalassa And Iruna

Down on the ground, Thalassa sighed, leaning her head back as she stared up into the maze of floating ice blocks. From this distance, she couldn't quite pick out Iruna's form among the soaring shadows.

The grueling race stretched past the one-hour mark. Out of the ten original contestants, only three remained in the sky; the other seven had been painfully eliminated—some knocked off their beasts into the freezing lake below, others sabotaged by the unpredictable flight paths of their mounts.

Iruna still hadn't managed to land a single successful hit, while every few minutes, the public platform flared brightly with Vael's name, widening his intimidating lead.

The crowd below chanted Vael's name, with several arrogant spectators shouting, "Just declare Vael the winner already! There's no point dragging this out for losers!"

High above the noise, Iruna calmly reached up, neatly adjusting the remaining flowers nestled in her dark brown hair. She gently caressed the thick fur neck of her riding beast, whispering, "You're doing great, steady now..."

The magnificent beast shook its tail gracefully, as if fully understanding her words of encouragement. A small, confident smile crept onto Iruna's face.

Suddenly, a massive glacier ice block materialized directly in her path. Her smile widened instantly. Without wasting a millisecond, she pulled an enchanted arrow from her back quiver, holding it close to her lips.

"Please... just this once," she whispered softly into the shaft of the arrow, infusing it with her magic. "Just this once... I don't want to disappoint the commander."

She drew the bowstring back to her cheek. The freezing night wind aggressively ruffled her hair and heavy furs. Closing her eyes for a brief second, she relied wholly on instinct, listening closely to the subtle air currents and the shifting hum of the glacier.

Now.

She released her fingers. The arrow tore forward through the dark air with terrifying speed, emitting a brilliant streak of golden light. Halfway toward the target, the glacier abruptly darted sideways to evade the blow, but Iruna's arrow curved dynamically in mid-air, tracking the movement with pinpoint accuracy.

CRACK!

The jade ice glacier erupted instantly into a thousand sparkling, glittering shards, and the entire night sky was brilliantly coated in a dazzling wash of deep bluish light.

Immediately, Iruna's name blazed across the central public platform in massive, glowing runes.

Down in the square, Thalassa fell forward onto her knees, throwing her hands up into the air as she screamed at the top of her lungs, "YES! YES! YES! THAT'S MY GIRLFRIEND!"

The surrounding crowd stared at her with deeply bewildered, slack-jawed expressions.

A man whispered loudly to his companion, "The deputy commander is truly head over heels, isn't she?"

A female voice scoffed nearby, "It's literally just one hit out of an hour! Why is she overreacting?"

"Even Vael's die-hard supporters didn't scream this loud when he took the lead!"

While the deputy commander was making a spectacle of her joy down below, Iruna was wearing a serene contented smile high above the clouds. This was her very first successful hit after nearly fifteen frustrating attempts. She was more than happy to have finally landed a clean shot. Unlike the loud, hyper-expressive Thalassa, Iruna was naturally shy and timid, so she didn't engage in grand, public celebrations; instead, she simply let her heart settle.

The possibility of Thalassa marrying her if she kept this up flooded her veins with a fierce, burning confidence.

Fueled by that sudden surge of motivation, she began her brutal pursuit of the remaining glaciers.

For the next thirty minutes, Iruna's name erupted on the public platform with astonishing frequency—consecutive hits that kept the night sky locked in an eternal, bluish hue.

Climbing rapidly through the ranks, Iruna clawed her way upward from third place, bypassing veteran marksmen until she sat proudly at number two, sitting just inches behind the reigning champion, Vael.

Down below, Thalassa was vibrating with uncontained joy. At this point, she didn't care whether Iruna won the tournament or not, she just wanted the race to end so she could pull the girl into her arms and tell her how proud she was.

The battle for the final, ultimate glacier was fierce. Only one massive target remained floating in the upper stratosphere, and only three elite contestants including Vael and Iruna were left in contention.

Vael was not about to let some seemingly fragile newcomer steal his crown; he always prided himself on taking the final shot.

On the final pass, all three remaining contestants drew their bows in synchronization. Their arrows were heavily fused with magic, all aiming directly for the core of the final glacier.

WHOOSH!

Mid-flight, two of the competing arrows violently fractured and broke apart under the intense magical pressure before they even reached the target. Only one single, perfectly balanced arrow pierced cleanly through the defense, striking the center of the glacier dead-on.

Instantly, a blinding flash of blue light reflected across the sea of staring faces below, and the public platform flared. Vael's name blazed in fiery, triumphant letters.

The crowd erupted into wild cheers and applause. Vael was officially crowned the overall winner once again.

High above, Iruna let out a long sigh, lowering her bow. "Oh well..." She reached out, affectionately rubbing the side of her riding beast's neck. "You did wonderful, thank you so much for carrying me."

She quickly vaulted down from her beast's back. A pair of soft, grey-feathered wings tore from her back. With a powerful flap, she dove downward through the freezing air with breathtaking speed. In a matter of seconds, she touched down softly in the square, sprinting straight toward Thalassa. Without a second thought, she threw her arms around Thalassa's neck, burying her face into her shoulder and sobbing softly. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, I disappointed you..."

The surrounding crowd didn't even bother giving them a second glance anymore, they were already exhausted by the dramatic, emotional rollercoaster of these two women.

Thalassa stood frozen for a second, stunned by the sudden sight of Iruna's gorgeous grey wings. This was the very first time she was seeing them fully unfurled. Her hands moved on instinct, gently extending to stroke the soft, velvety feathers while the sound of Iruna's quiet sobs muffled softly against her collarbone.

Realizing the public square was no place for this, Thalassa quickly wrapped an arm around Iruna's waist, guiding her away from the roaring crowds into a quiet, shadowed alcove near the base of an ice sculpture.

She pulled Iruna tightly against her chest, letting the girl rest her head right over her beating heart.

Thalassa began gently stroking Iruna's hair, rubbing her back in slow circles and holding her hand firmly within her own. "Please... please don't cry, my darling. You have not disappointed me in any way"

Hearing those words only made Iruna cry harder, tears soaking right through Thalassa's layered garments.

Thalassa didn't mind. She continued massaging Iruna's back in slow, soothing circles, resting her chin on top of the weeping girl's head. "There is absolutely nothing in this world that could make your efforts feel like a disappointment to me. If anything, seeing how hard you try and how deeply you care just makes me fall even deeper in love with you. So please... stop crying now. If that little brat Sylaris were standing right here, she'd probably taunt you for crying like a baby."

Despite herself, a wet giggle escaped Iruna's lips.

Thalassa gently reached up, placing her fingers beneath Iruna's chin and forcing the crying girl to lift her head so her round, grey eyes were forced to meet Thalassa's golden gaze. Thalassa extended her thumbs, gently wiping away the shimmering tracks of tears from Iruna's cheeks.

"I love you when you win and conquer the skies," Thalassa whispered, "and I love you even more when you're hurting and desperately need a safe place to land. There is nothing you could ever do that would make me stop loving you. Nothing in eternity."

Leaning down, she pressed a soft, kiss onto Iruna's damp forehead. Finally, the sobbing subsided, replaced by quiet whimpers.

Reaching out, Thalassa delicately plucked one of the remaining flowers from Iruna's tangled hair and tucked it neatly behind the base of her soft grey feathers. "It is so breathtakingly beautiful," Thalassa murmured, gently ruffling her fingers through the delicate feathers.

Iruna sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "My... my mother always said they were ugly... she told me the feathers fell off way too easily..."

"And that precisely is why that wretched bitch is dead" Thalassa replied.

Iruna let out a startled laugh, burying her face against Thalassa's chest once more.

Thalassa placed a warm hand on the back of Iruna's neck, drawing her upward until their faces were inches apart. Their lips were brushing, and Iruna's face turned so red it easily rivaled a ripe tomato in the winter cold.

As Thalassa spoke, her warm breath drifted softly against Iruna's skin, sending a delicious shiver straight down her spine.

"You are so breathtakingly beautiful, Iruna. And this dress...?" Thalassa bit down lightly on her lower lip. "It looks unbelievable on you. It fits your body like a dream.

I cannot wait to tear it off you tonight."

She caressed Iruna's burning cheek with her thumb. "I want to leave every trace of my adoration on every inch of your skin until you forget every cruel thing you were ever told, and remember only how cherished and worshipped you are."

Their fingers intertwined tightly. Iruna looked as though she was right on the verge of weeping all over again as Thalassa continued, her voice dropping into a murmur. "You are my ruin, my eternal obsession, and my only true sanctuary in this cold realm. I love you with a hunger that eternity itself won't ever be enough to satisfy."

Thalassa crashed her lips onto Iruna's in a deep, passionate kiss. The intensity of it made Iruna's knees wobble, nearly causing her to stumble backward into the snow, but Thalassa was faster. She quickly extended both arms, wrapping them around Iruna's waist to hold her against her body.

All around them, the world seemed to halt. The howling northern wind whipped Iruna's hair and silk skirts into a wild dance, while the floating lanterns above bathed them in a soft, eternal golden glow. It was a kiss born of pure devotion. Desperate and tender. Sealing their shared world away from the rest of the noisy festival.

Suddenly, a little boy scampered past them. He was wearing a wooden mask carved with intricate white gargoyle designs, complete with tiny fake horns protruding from the top.

He pointed at them and yelled at the top of his lungs, "The brothel is just down the street, get a room, losers!" before sprinting away into the dark as fast as his small legs could carry him.

Thalassa and Iruna broke their kiss, staring after the retreating child for a split second before bursting into loud laughter.

As the laughter faded, Iruna impulsively threw her arms around Thalassa's neck, hugging her tightly. Thalassa was momentarily stunned by the sudden, forward motion, but a smile quickly broke across her face as she stroked Iruna's back.

"I love you so much, Commander," Iruna whispered against Thalassa's chest, "You are my heart, my anchor in the dark, and my everything. I love you... completely, and without a shred of regret."

Thalassa smiled, pressing a gentle kiss into Iruna's hair. She pulled back slightly, playfully pinching one of Iruna's flushed cheeks. With a smirk playing on her lips, she teased, "Mmm... look at our little demon, has she suddenly grown so bold and confident huh?"

Iruna immediately pouted, swatting at Thalassa's hand with annoyed huff. "Commander!"

Instead of apologizing, Thalassa laughed, wrapping her arm around Iruna's waist as they turned and began walking side-by-side toward the blinding lights of the tavern ahead.

As they walked, Iruna's grey feathers ruffled softly in the night wind.

Leaning down close to her ear, Thalassa muttered in a low, teasing purr, "Just so you know... the wings stay on during sex tonight, my love."

Iruna let out an embarrassed squeak, quickly turning her burning face away while Thalassa's delighted laughter echoed into the winter night.
