The black stone walls of the Rainswept Citadel loomed overhead, illuminated ever so briefly by the flash of lightning as the ever present storm continued looming over our lands, washing away the sins of our forefathers...

Or that was what the old folk all claimed; it rained day in, day out, yet there was never any proof that the perpetual storm was here because of some sin committed by the earliest settlers of this area, nor was there any proof that some Divine Beast had felt slighted by us Mortals.

For those of us not born centuries ago, this storm was simply a piece of our lives that simply never went away, a constant that we could always rely on in our otherwise tumultuous lives; being pelted by rain and listening to the constant rolling of thunder over these mountains was just... an everyday occurrence here.

For me, twenty or so years had been filled with rain, sweat and labor, my everything being given to the small Spirit Jade mine that my family had been blessed enough to own for the last century; every single day I was in its depths, swinging a pickaxe alongside my Father and eldest brother as we earned a living for our family.

Outside my Mother tended to the pitiful garden alongside my younger brother, shielding the muddy soil with thick slabs of stone that we pulled from the mines and growing some paltry vegetables that satiated our bodies.

Roc Carrots, Rubble Potatoes and Rainvine Beans were our primary source of nutrition, alongside whatever critters we could scavenge inside of the mine as well as the lean meat we purchased from the markets.

It was definitely a hard life, one that always had me yearning for more, yet I was also a realist; if I wasn't able to nurture my somewhat decent Spirit Root before the end of the month, this would be what I had to look forwards to for the rest of my life.

Swinging a pickaxe against the same black stone as always, searching for another pocket of pale green Spirit Jade to further fund my life for the next month or so; if I was lucky I could find myself a decent girl, have a kid or two and then pass on the mine to them, and if I wasn't then I would just keep working here anyways.

My older brother was only here because the Academy up in the Rainswept Citadel was on holiday, and even though it had to have irked him to come back down into the mud with us he was still a member of this family, so he took a pickaxe too.

Thinking that, I took a moment to gather my breath and wiped the sweat from my brow, looking over towards the lean man that had been the pride of our parents for so long; a sharp jaw, honest brown eyes, raven black hair drawn back into a once neat bun, Giovanni was an up and coming scholar that might have a shot at making it as a City Official, so long as he maintained his good standing and grades.

Unlike me, he was put together and learned, capable of speaking easily to crowds and articulating his thoughts nicely; he was a gentle, proud and talented man, two years older than I was and the talk of our little town here on the mountainside.

"Izzy, stop staring at me and keep mining."

His soft voice made me chuckle as I asked "Find any good lookin' gals up in the city, Gio~? Am I gonna get me a sister in law sometime soon~?", making the scholarly man roll his eyes as he too rested his pickaxe on his shoulder, taking a moment to rest.

"Izzy, don't go teasin' yer brother 'bout things like that, alright?"

The bear of a man that had raised us both clicked his tongue and looked between the two of us, and although it sounded like he wanted this to stop he couldn't help himself as he added "And if there was a pretty lil' thing that got interested in my boy I am damn certain he'd a told me already. Right Gio?"

"Father, I don't have time for any 'pretty lil' thing' right now. The exams are coming up and if I don't get a certain grade, my chances to become a City Official slim down quite a bit."

"Good. Listen, get yerself that job, find a cozy lil' place up there in the city, and after things get stable I promise you'll be chasin' off all kinds of pretty girls. See, back when I was just a lad-"

"What, when these mountains were untouched and there was no storm?"

Immediately I winked over at my brother as he held back a grin, both of us unable to help ourselves when it came to teasing our old man whenever he got going about his youth; seeing that stern stare he fixed us both with only made me grin more, and if it wasn't for the fact that we were in a cramped mine I think he might've tried to whack my head.

"That's why I'm the one who's got 'imself a lovely lady up there on the surface and you're still down here mumblin' and grumblin' 'bout being all lonely. Maybe if you were just a tiny bit more soft spoken like Gio-"

"Yeah yeah, whatever old man. Gio, try an' get a nice lady for my sister in law, yeah? One of them gentle and kind city gals you always tell me about."

My brother just rolled his eyes and rolled out his shoulders, not deigning to give me a proper answer and instead turning back to his section, resuming his work and causing our old man to snort as he said "And if ya do get one of 'em nice lady's, Gio, make sure to keep 'er far away from Izzy. Wouldn't want 'er to pick up any of your sister's idiocy, y'know?"

We all laughed at that and got back to work, swinging the pickaxes once more and searching for some more Spirit Jade to make life just a little bit better... and hey, at least we could sell the black stone for some coin too, so long as it wasn't in horrible condition... whatever that meant.
