Chapter 4 - THE SCENT

Kael POV

Kael is dying from boredom.

He stands in the corner of the ballroom watching paranormal elites drink champagne and talk about territory expansion. Same conversations he's heard a thousand times. Same politicians trying to gain his favor. Same boring endless cycle of power plays and alliances.

He doesn't care about any of it.

His wolf has been restless for months. Angry. Demanding something Kael can't give it. Something essential. Something missing.

Kael is Alpha of the strongest pack in the northern territories. He became Alpha at nineteen when his father died in a territorial war. He was young but brilliant. He consolidated power through strategy and intelligence and absolute ruthlessness.

Now at twenty-nine, he's the most feared Alpha in the paranormal world. His pack is the largest. His territory is the safest. His word is law. He's had everything a wolf could want. Status. Power. Loyalty. Respect.

But he's never had a mate.

He's dated women from other packs. Bonded temporarily for political purposes. But never felt the deep mating pull that wolves are supposed to feel. The kind of pull that binds two people together for eternity.

His wolf has been growing more restless. More frustrated. More angry at the emptiness of endless power with no one to share it with.

Dax approaches with two glasses of whiskey.

"You look like you're going to murder someone," Dax says, handing him a glass.

"I'm considering it."

Dax always knows when Kael needs alcohol. His second in command has been with him since they were teenagers. Dax is the only person Kael actually trusts. The only person who knows him.

"Marcus is trying to make a power play. He's gathering support from the smaller packs. Thinks he can challenge your position at the next council meeting. I've already started countering his moves but—"

Kael stops listening. He's heard this before. There's always someone trying to challenge him. There's always politics. Always someone trying to take what's his.

His wolf doesn't care about Marcus. His wolf is restless for something else entirely.

That's when the air shifts.

It's subtle. Most people wouldn't notice. But Kael isn't most people. He's Alpha. He notices everything.

The air literally changes. The temperature drops by two degrees. The scent hits him like lightning and his entire world explodes.

MATE.

The word is absolute. Not a suggestion. Not a possibility. A fact. His wolf knows this before his human brain catches up. His body goes rigid. Every muscle locks. Every nerve fires at once.

His wolf erupts inside him.

FIND HER, it demands. CLAIM HER. KEEP HER.

Kael's breathing gets shallow. His eyes start to glow gold. He can feel his wolf clawing under his skin. Demanding. Unstoppable.

He forces himself to stay calm. Forced his human side to take control.

He scans the crowd methodically.

There. A woman in a black dress moving through the ballroom like she's trying to disappear. Like she's actively making herself invisible. She's turned away so he can't see her face. Only her dark hair. Her small frame. The way she's moving like she's trying to be forgotten.

Her scent is rare. Intoxicating. Like nothing he's ever smelled before. It's dark and ancient and powerful. It fills his lungs and makes his entire body respond. It's everything his wolf has been searching for. It's the missing piece.

It's his mate.

Kael forces himself to move slowly. Controlled. He's hunted before. He's tracked prey through forests and across territories. He's tracked criminals across continents. But this hunt matters more than anything. This hunt is for his mate.

He moves through the crowd methodically. Like he's just another guest at this charity event. Like his whole body isn't vibrating with the need to find her. Like his wolf isn't screaming at him.

She's getting closer. Her scent is getting stronger. His vision blurs from the intensity of it. She's right there. Right in front of him. He can almost touch her.

His wolf fights to run to her. Fights to claim her in front of everyone. Fights to make the entire paranormal world know that she belongs to him.

Kael forces his wolf to wait.

He reaches her and their eyes meet.

Her eyes are brown. Normal brown. But they're wide with fear and recognition. Like she feels the bond the same way he does. Like something inside her is responding to him.

For one perfect moment, everything makes sense.

Then she runs.

Kael moves to follow but she's already pushing through the crowd. Already disappearing between clusters of paranormal elites. She's fast. Desperate. Moving like she's terrified.

Kael follows. Closes the distance. Twenty feet. Fifteen.

She reaches the elevators and runs inside.

The doors are closing.

Kael reaches the space where she was standing just seconds ago.

Her scent stops.

Not fades. Not trails away. Stops. Completely gone. Like someone flipped a switch and turned her off.

Kael stands in front of the closed elevator doors and inhales deeply. Searching for any trace of her. Her scent was burning through his entire system. It was the strongest thing he's ever smelled.

Now there's nothing.

He looks around the ballroom. Searches every face. Looks at every person. She's gone. Completely vanished. Like she was never there.

His wolf doesn't accept that.

FIND HER, his wolf demands. FIND OUR MATE. HUNT HER. CLAIM HER. NOW.

Kael hits the elevator button. The doors open. The elevator is empty. He searches it anyway.

Dax appears beside him looking confused.

"You okay. You look like someone just died."

Kael doesn't answer. He's staring at the empty elevator trying to understand what just happened.

A woman doesn't just vanish. Her scent doesn't just disappear. Scent is biological. Physical. It's one of the strongest bonds between wolves. Once a wolf catches a mate's scent, they can track them across continents.

But this woman's scent ended like someone cut it off with a knife.

"That woman," Kael says. "The one in black. Did you see her."

Dax scans the ballroom.

"I see five women in black dresses."

"She just ran toward the elevators."

Dax walks over and hits the button. The elevator opens. Empty.

"Security says someone just left through the emergency exit," Dax says, checking his phone. "Female. Black dress. Left maybe two minutes ago."

Two minutes. She's been gone for two minutes and Kael is still burning with the need to find her.

His wolf is pacing under his skin like a caged animal. It knows what Kael is realizing. It knows what happened here tonight.

Kael just caught the scent of his mate. His wolf felt the bond. His entire body recognized her as the one he's been searching for his entire life.

And then she disappeared.

"Get me everything," Kael says quietly. His voice is ice. "Security footage. Building records. Her location. Her name. Everything."

"What happened."

"I found her."

Dax goes pale.

"What. How is that possible. You said you'd never—"

"I don't know," Kael says. "But she's out there. Somewhere in this city. And I will find her."

His wolf settles slightly at those words. Finds it acceptable. The hunt isn't over. It's just beginning.

Kael walks to the window and looks out at the city. Somewhere out there is the woman who smells like nothing. Somewhere out there is his mate.

He will find her.

His phone buzzes with a text from an unknown number.

The message says: You felt me. Good. Now stop looking before you find something that will destroy everything you built.

Kael reads the message three times.

Destroy everything he built. His pack. His territory. His father's legacy.

He doesn't care.

He's waited his whole life for this. For his mate. For the bond that makes a wolf complete.

He will find her and nothing in the paranormal world will stop him.
