Beijing had been preparing for this for weeks. By noon, it felt as though half the entertainment industry had arrived.
Traffic around the Starlight Festival grounds stretched for kilometres. Luxury cars crawled beside buses packed with fans. Black celebrity vans slipped through designated lanes while taxis stopped wherever they could, spilling out groups carrying banners, light sticks, cameras and bags stuffed with merchandise.
Flights had been arriving since early morning. Actors from Shanghai. Idols from Seoul. Models flying in from Europe.
Singers fresh from overseas tours.
Directors, producers, influencers, dancers, comedians, athletes, designers— celebrities whose schedules had been rearranged months in advance just to make an appearance.
Everyone was coming to Beijing.
The Starlight Festival was already one of the biggest annual celebrations in the entertainment industry.
This year looked determined to outdo itself.
Outside the venue, the atmosphere was closer to a carnival than a celebrity event.
Music blasted from enormous speakers near the entrance. Giant LED screens displayed the festival logo between sponsor advertisements. Colourful banners stretched across the walkways while staff moved continuously through the crowds, directing guests towards different sections.
Fans were everywhere. Some had arrived before sunrise. Others had travelled across the country.
Groups sat on the pavement comparing photocards and swapping merchandise. Fan clubs distributed banners and matching bracelets. People carried signs decorated with glitter, fluorescent paint and enough rhinestones to blind passing aircraft.
Every few minutes, another scream tore through the crowd.
"LOOK!"
A young actor had appeared near one of the entrances. Phones immediately rose.
"GEGE!"
"OVER HERE!"
"LOOK THIS WAY!"
The actor laughed, lifted both hands and posed while cameras flashed behind the barricade.
Someone shouted his character's name from a recent drama. He immediately turned. The resulting scream nearly destroyed several eardrums.
Elsewhere, two members of a popular girl group had stopped beside a sponsor booth to take photographs with fans.
"Can we do a heart?"
Phones flashed. Another fan approached trembling so badly she nearly dropped hers. One of the idols caught it.
"Careful."
Within minutes, the clip was online.

"I HAVE BEEN IN TRAFFIC FOR TWO HOURS. IF MY IDOL LEAVES BEFORE I GET THERE I WILL WALK INTO THE SEA."
"SOMEONE JUST WALKED PAST ME AND I THINK IT WAS LIN YUSHEN????"
Every few minutes, another celebrity appeared somewhere inside the festival grounds and an entirely different section of the crowd lost its collective mind.
"LI MING! LI MING! LOOK OVER HERE!"
"GEGE! I LOVE YOU!"
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
"TURN AROUND!"
"HE TURNED! HE FUCKING TURNED!"
"HEY! DON'T PUSH ME, I'M SOMEBODY'S DAUGHTER!"
"WHO JUST ARRIVED?"
"I DON'T KNOW!"
"THEN WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING?!"
"EVERYBODY ELSE STARTED

Another black van pulled up. Another barrage of photographs hit social media.
Celebrities posing beneath the enormous Starlight arch. Fans showing off outfits inspired by their favourite stars. Friends taking pictures together. Artists signing posters. Actors waving from balconies. Models stopping for photographers.
Food. Merchandise.
Stage clips.
Blurry photographs captioned with frantic declarations that someone had just seen someone famous.
Entertainment bloggers were working overtime. Every arrival became content. Every outfit became a post.
Across the internet, livestream comments moved so quickly they were almost impossible to read.

Inside the grounds, the festival was already alive.
Thousands moved through the enormous complex beneath strings of lights and towering digital screens. Brand booths stretched along entire walkways. Food stalls sent clouds of smoke and spice into the air. Music came from several directions at once.
One stage hosted fan games. Another had the cast of a popular historical drama answering questions before a cheering audience.
At one booth, celebrities signed albums and posters. At another, fans queued for photographs with actors.
Near the central plaza, an idol was attempting to teach several hundred people the chorus choreography from her latest single.
"Five, six, seven, eight!" Hundreds of arms moved. Badly. She burst out laughing onstage. "No! What are you people doing?"
The crowd screamed back. She tried again. Somehow, they got worse.
On another stage, a singer had already begun performing. The opening notes of one of the year's biggest songs rolled across the festival grounds.
Recognition travelled through the crowd almost instantly. People stopped walking. Heads turned, then hundreds began running towards the stage.
"IT'S STARTING!"
"WAIT FOR ME!"
"MOVE!"
"DON'T RUN!"
Nobody listened. The singer appeared beneath a burst of white light. The crowd erupted. "BEIJING!"
Thousands screamed back.
Bass thundered through the plaza. Hands rose. Light sticks swayed above heads. People who had only intended to watch for a minute found themselves singing the chorus with complete strangers. The livestream numbers climbed.

And the festival was nowhere near full yet.
Another line of vehicles entered through the VIP route. Photographers immediately repositioned themselves. Camera shutters erupted as doors opened.
Across the plaza—
"ZHOU WEI!"
The actor turned and the crowd detonated.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"
"HE LOOKED!"
"HE LOOKED AT US!"
"HE HAS EYES. THAT'S GENERALLY WHAT THEY DO!"
"SHUT UP!"
"ZHOU WEI, I'VE LOVED YOU SINCE BE MY BIAS!"
Someone else screamed, "I LOVED YOU BEFORE BE MY BIAS!"
A third voice rose from somewhere deep in the crowd. "I LOVED YOU WHEN YOUR ACTING WAS STILL BAD!"
Zhou Wei stopped walking. His manager covered his face, then Zhou Wei burst out laughing. The crowd completely lost control.
"HE HEARD YOU!"
"RUN!"
"I REGRET NOTHING!"
Phones were already uploading the clip.
Within minutes, the comments arrived.

Outside, a veteran actress stepped from another vehicle, elegant in white and smiling as reporters called her name. Behind her came a famous director. Then an idol group and two models, followed by an actor whose arrival produced such a violent scream from one section of the barricade that he stopped halfway towards the entrance and laughed.
"Are you trying to kill me?"
The screaming got louder. He took several photographs with fans before security finally encouraged him towards the venue.
Near another entrance, a young actress spotted someone holding a poster from her very first drama.
"You watched that?"
The fan nodded frantically. The actress took the poster, signed it and added a tiny heart beside her name.
The fan's knees buckled. Her friends caught her. The actress covered her mouth, laughing. Another clip for the internet. Another hashtag. Another tiny moment swallowed into the enormous celebration around them.
Because that was Starlight.
The distance between the people on the screen and the people watching them became just a little smaller.
Fans met actors they had followed for years. Artists performed songs people knew by heart. Upcoming stars stood on the same stages as veterans they had once admired from afar.
Brands launched campaigns. Films were promoted. Drama casts reunited. Models walked showcases.
Idols performed.
Celebrities wandered between events—sometimes surrounded by security, sometimes stopping because somebody had shouted their name loudly enough.
And everywhere— Cameras. Phones. Laughter.
Music.
Screaming.
Thousands upon thousands of people documenting their own tiny piece of the day.
By late afternoon, the festival grounds were packed.
The sun had begun its slow descent over Beijing, and lights around the complex flickered alive one by one.
Huge screens glowed above the crowds. The main stage burned gold against the darkening sky.
Another performance was beginning. More celebrities were arriving. More fans were pouring through the gates.
And as evening approached, everyone knew the biggest events were still ahead.
Starlight Festival had only just begun.
