Chapter 54 - Chapter 54 Grow up

Later that evening, the mansion was filled with a warm, glowing magic.

Inside the large master bedroom, Sam sat in the center of the bed.

Jean and Ororo joined him.

They connected their hands and their energies, beginning the sacred dance of dual cultivation.

The room quickly lit up with bright red, white, and pink light. Their souls mixed together perfectly, feeding each other and growing stronger with every breath.

Anna did not join them on the bed.

She sat quietly on a soft cushion on the floor. Her face was a little red, but her eyes were closed in deep focus.

She was still too new to the magic.

Her body was simply not strong enough to handle the massive, direct flow of Sam's heavy Yang Qi yet.

But she didn't need to touch him to grow.

Because Sam, Jean, and Ororo were releasing so much pure, ancient energy into the air, the bedroom felt like a thick ocean of magic.

Anna just sat there and breathed.

Just by doing her normal, simple cultivation near them, her progress improved ten times faster.

She could actually feel her wild mutant powers calming down and her own Yin Qi growing solid and bright inside her chest.

"Just focus on your breathing, Anna,"

Sam's gentle voice echoed in her mind.

"You are doing perfectly. Let the ambient energy wash over you."

Anna smiled, keeping her eyes closed.

She felt incredibly safe.

Meanwhile, outside on the quiet patio, Natasha and Hela were sitting together under the cool night sky.

Natasha held a warm cup of tea.

Hela held a glass of dark red wine.

Hela looked out over the glowing city lights in the far distance.

"Midgard has changed so much,"

Hela said softly, her dark eyes reflecting the distant city.

"When I came here with Odin thousands of years ago, it was just mud, sticks, and scared little humans hiding in cold caves. Now... It is bright. It is loud. It is full of life."

"We have grown up a lot,"

Natasha smiled gently, taking a sip of her tea.

"Humans don't fight with swords and wooden shields much anymore. We build machines. We fly up into space. We even have heroes who fight to protect the weak."

Hela took a slow sip of her wine. She stared at the city, her face full of deep, heavy thought.

"It is very strange,"

Hela admitted, her voice quiet.

"My entire life, I only knew how to conquer. I looked at a new world, and I only thought about how to burn it and rule it. But now... my mind is completely quiet. I look at this world, and I do not want to burn it. But I do not know what else to do with myself."

Natasha reached out and gently rested her hand on Hela's arm.

"You don't have to be a weapon anymore, Hela,"

Natasha told her warmly, speaking from her own deep experience as a former assassin.

"You are completely free. You can find a new purpose. You can fight to protect the people you care about, instead of fighting for a king who only used you in the dark."

Hela looked at Natasha's kind, honest face.

For the first time in her long, bloody life, the Goddess of Death felt like she had a real home.

She had sisters who respected her, and a man who could easily hold her wild power.

"To protect..."

Hela whispered softly, testing the word on her tongue.

She looked back at the bright city lights. A small, genuine smile appeared on her pale face.

"I think I might like that."

The next morning, the mansion was peaceful and quiet.

Sam was sitting on the large living room couch.

He was watching a movie with Natasha, Hela, Jean, Ororo, and Anna.

The girls were relaxed, drinking coffee and enjoying a quiet weekend morning together.

Suddenly, Sam's secure phone rang.

He looked at the screen. It was Peggy Carter. He answered it and put it on speaker so Natasha could hear.

"Good morning, Peggy,"

Sam said gently.

"How is the hunting going?"

"Good morning, Sam,"

Peggy replied.

But her voice did not sound happy or victorious. It sounded very heavy, tired, and deeply troubled.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. is almost completely clean. We caught most of the Hydra rats. But... we found something very disturbing in Alexander Pierce's secret files."

Sam frowned slightly.

Natasha immediately muted the television.

Hela leaned forward, her sharp eyes focusing on the phone.

"Tell me,"

Sam said calmly.

"It is James,"

Peggy whispered, her voice shaking with a mix of anger and pure heartbreak.

"Bucky Barnes. Steve's best friend. He did not die falling from that train in the ice."

Sam nodded slowly.

He already knew it, but he let Peggy explain.

"Hydra found him in the snow,"

Peggy continued, sounding sick to her stomach.

"They replaced his missing arm with metal. They completely wiped his memory. They turned him into a ghost assassin called the Winter Soldier. He has been a mindless weapon for them for seventy years."

"Where is he now?"

Sam asked.

"We are tracking him down. But that is not the worst part,"

Peggy took a deep, shaky breath over the phone.

"Sam... we found a security video tape. It shows a Hydra assassination mission from 1991. Bucky was the one who caused the car crash. He killed Howard and Maria Stark. He murdered Tony's parents."

The living room went completely dead silent.

Natasha's eyes widened in pure shock.

She knew exactly how dangerous this secret was.

If Tony Stark found out the wrong way, his anger would completely tear the Avengers apart.

"Steve and I are looking at the tape right now,"

Peggy said softly.

"Steve is completely broken. Bucky is his brother. But Howard was our dear friend. And Tony is our teammate."

Peggy paused. She took another deep breath to steady herself.

"You are our leader, Sam,"

Peggy said firmly, putting all of her trust into him.

"We will follow your orders. What should we do? Do we burn this tape and hide the truth from Tony? Or do we tell him?"

Sam closed his eyes for a moment.

He thought about the terrible pain of brainwashing.

He thought about Tony's fragile heart.

"You never hide the truth from family, Peggy,"

Sam answered quietly, his voice carrying the heavy, solid weight of a true leader.

"If we hide it, it will rot from the inside and destroy our team later. Tony deserves to know how his parents died."

"But Tony will want blood, Sam,"

Peggy warned him, her voice full of fear.

"He will not care about the brainwashing. He will only see the man who killed his mother. He will try to kill Bucky."

"I will handle Tony,"

Sam promised smoothly.

"Your job is to find Bucky. Bring him to me alive. Do not hurt him. We have the Cleansing Mind Pills. We can heal Bucky's broken mind."

"Understood,"

Peggy said, letting out a massive sigh of relief.

Hearing Sam's calm, confident voice gave her hope.

"We will find him and bring him to you, Sam."

Sam hung up the phone and slipped it into his pocket.

He looked around the living room at the women he cared about.

"I am so sorry, girls,"

Sam said gently, offering them an apologetic smile.

"Our movie morning is over. I have to go."

"It is okay, Sam,"

Jean smiled warmly, standing up.

"The world needs its protector."

Ororo and Jean walked over and kissed his cheeks.

Hela simply nodded at him with deep, quiet respect.

Even little Anna offered him a shy, supportive smile.

Sam turned to Natasha. He expected his wife to grab her gear and come with him, but she just stayed on the couch.

"I am not coming with you,"

Natasha said softly, understanding the heavy weight of the situation.

"Tony is your brother. He needs to hear this directly from you, man to man. You have to do this alone."

Sam nodded. He appreciated her wisdom.

With a quick burst of pink light, Sam flew out of the mansion.

He crossed the sky in minutes and landed smoothly on the large balcony of Stark Tower.

He walked inside and smiled at the sight in the living room.

Tony Stark was sitting on the sofa next to Pepper Potts. Pepper looked incredibly beautiful.

Her stomach had grown quite large, and she was glowing with health.

Tony had his hand resting gently on her belly, a massive, goofy smile on his face.

"I felt a kick!"

Tony laughed brightly.

"She is definitely going to be a soccer player. Or maybe a genius mechanic. Both."

"Hello, Tony. Hello, Pepper,"

Sam greeted them warmly, stepping into the room.

Tony looked up. His eyes lit up with genuine happiness.

"Sam!"

Tony cheered, standing up to give him a quick hug.

"Great to see you! Are you here to check on the baby? The doctors say everything is perfectly healthy."

"I am very glad to hear that, Tony,"

Sam smiled, but he kept his voice very calm and quiet.

He looked Tony directly in the eyes.

"But I am actually here for you. We need to talk. Alone."

Tony's bright smile slowly faded. He was a genius, and he could easily read the serious look on Sam's face.

The room suddenly felt very heavy.

Tony gave Pepper a quick, reassuring kiss on the forehead.

"I will be right back, honey,"

Tony whispered.

He turned to Sam and nodded toward the elevator.

"Let's go down to my lab."

The glass doors of the private lab closed behind them, locking them in complete silence.

Tony leaned against his workbench.

He crossed his arms and looked at Sam.

"Alright, Sam. You look like someone just died,"

Tony said, trying to make a joke, but his voice was tight with worry.

"What is going on?"

Sam did not hide anything. He told Tony the entire truth, step by step.

He told him about S.H.I.E.L.D., about Hydra hiding in the shadows, and finally, about the Winter Soldier.

"They found Steve's best friend, Bucky Barnes, in the ice,"

Sam explained gently.

"They wiped his memory. They turned him into a weapon. And... they used him to do terrible things, Tony."

Sam reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted digital drive.

He plugged it into a screen on Tony's desk.

"I need you to watch this,"

Sam said softly.

The black-and-white security footage played on the screen. It showed a dark road in 1991.

It showed the car crash. It showed the man with the metal arm coldly murdering Howard and Maria Stark.

Sam stepped close to Tony, fully prepared to hold him back.

He expected Tony to scream. He expected Tony to summon his Iron Man armor and try to burn the city down in pure, blinding rage.

But Tony didn't scream.

Tony just stared at the screen. His hands gripped the edge of the metal table so hard his knuckles turned completely white.

Tears filled his eyes and slowly rolled down his cheeks.

The video ended. The screen went black.

Tony stood perfectly still for a very long time.

"Tony..."

Sam started to say, ready to offer comfort.

Tony slowly raised his hand, asking for silence. He took a deep, shuddering breath and wiped his tears away.

He looked at Sam, his eyes filled with immense sadness, but absolutely no anger.

"He didn't know what he was doing,"

Tony whispered, his voice cracking.

"His face... he looked like a machine. He was just a prisoner inside his own mind."

Sam blinked in surprise. He looked at Tony with deep respect.

"I thought you would be angry,"

Sam admitted honestly.

"I thought you would want blood."

Tony shook his head slowly. He looked up toward the ceiling, thinking about Pepper sitting upstairs.

"The old Tony Stark would have wanted blood,"

Tony said quietly, his voice growing steady and firm.

"The old Tony would have built a new bomb to kill him. But... I have grown up, Sam. I am going to be a father soon."

Tony looked back at the blank screen, wiping his face one last time.

"I cannot bring my child into a world built on endless revenge,"

Tony said, his heart completely open and pure.

"My parents were murdered by Hydra, not by Bucky Barnes. Bucky is a victim, just like them."

Tony turned to Sam, his eyes shining with true, heroic resolve.

"We need to find him,"

Tony declared softly.

"We need to bring him home, and we need to help him."
