Chapter 17 - WHAT ANSWERS BACK

Chapter 17: What Answers Back

The moment Emily stepped forward, the world seemed to tighten around her.

The shadows followed.

Not in a rush, not in chaos….but with intention. They moved as though they understood her, as though they had been waiting for this exact moment to finally act without hesitation. The air grew heavier with every step she took, pressing against her skin, slipping into her lungs until even breathing felt deliberate.

Across from her, the taller man's expression sharpened—not alarmed, but attentive, like a scholar observing something rare in motion.

"Fascinating" he said quietly.

Emily didn't respond. Her focus narrowed, locking onto him, onto the second man behind him, onto the tension stretching between all of them like a thread ready to snap. She could feel it now—every shift in the air, every subtle movement, every breath that didn't quite match the rhythm of the night.

Behind her, Lena whispered her name again, softer this time, like she was afraid to say it too loudly.

"Emily… please…"

Emily heard her. She did. But the sound felt distant, like it belonged to another world…one she was already stepping away from.

Her mate moved at her side, close enough that she could feel the heat of him, the restrained energy humming beneath his skin.

"Don't" he said under his breath, his voice low but urgent. "You don't know what they are."

Emily let out a quiet breath, her gaze never leaving the men ahead of her. "Then maybe it's time I find out."

That earned a reaction.

Small, but real.

The second man's eyes narrowed slightly, while the taller one tilted his head, studying her more carefully now.

"You're adapting quickly" he said. "Faster than we predicted."

Emily's fingers curled at her sides. The shadows mirrored the motion, tightening subtly around her, brushing against her legs like something alive and aware.

"I'm not something you get to predict," she replied.

A faint smile touched his lips. "Everyone is predictable, given the right pressure."

Before she could respond, the air shifted again—sharper this time, more focused. The pressure that had been lingering suddenly condensed, pulling inward as though something invisible had drawn a boundary around them.

Her mate stiffened instantly.

"They're setting a field," he said, louder now.

Emily felt it too. The edges of the space around them blurred slightly, like heat rising from asphalt, distorting everything beyond it. The rest of the world…the quiet street, the distant lights…seemed to fall away, leaving only the four of them, trapped in a space that no longer felt entirely real.

Lena let out a shaky breath. "Emily… what's happening?"

Emily didn't answer. She couldn't—not because she didn't want to, but because something deeper had taken hold of her attention.

The mark on her arm burned.

Not wildly. Not painfully.

But with purpose.

It pulsed once….slow and heavy….and something inside her responded.

The shadows stirred.

The taller man's gaze dropped briefly to her arm, then lifted again, his expression no longer amused.

"There it is" he murmured. "The resonance."

Her mate stepped forward slightly, placing himself between Emily and them without fully blocking her view. "You're done. Drop whatever this is and leave."

The second man gave a small, humorless laugh. "You're still under the impression you can give orders."

"I'm under the impression" her mate replied, his voice hardening "that you're underestimating her."

That earned a pause.

A brief one—but enough.

Emily felt it. That shift. That recalculation.

The taller man straightened slightly, his attention returning fully to her. "Then let's stop guessing."

He lifted his hand.

Everything happened at once.

The pressure snapped inward, collapsing the space between them in a sudden, violent pull. The air compressed, dragging at Emily's body as if trying to force her forward, to strip her balance away and leave her exposed.

But the shadows reacted faster.

They surged outward in a sharp, fluid motion, colliding with the force before it could fully reach her. The impact rippled through the air, distorting the space in a visible wave that sent dust scattering across the ground.

Emily's breath hitched—but she didn't fall.

She held her ground.

The realization struck her almost instantly.

She hadn't commanded them.

They had moved anyway.

The second man's eyes darkened. "It's autonomous."

"Not entirely," the taller one replied, watching her closely. "Look again."

Emily felt it then—the connection.

Not something distant or external, but something threaded through her, responding to her without needing words, without needing conscious thought. It wasn't separate from her.

It was part of her.

Her mate glanced at her, something like disbelief flickering across his expression. "Emily…"

She didn't look at him.

Because she was starting to understand.

The taller man lowered his hand slowly. "You see it now, don't you?"

Emily swallowed, her voice quieter but steadier than before. "It listens."

"It answers," he corrected.

The distinction mattered.

She felt it.

Before she could respond, the second man moved—faster this time, closing part of the distance between them with deliberate precision. The shift was enough to trigger the shadows again, but this time they didn't surge wildly.

They adjusted.

They tightened around her, rising slightly higher, forming something closer to a barrier than a defense.

The man stopped just at its edge, his gaze fixed on her through the shifting darkness.

"You don't belong here," he said.

Emily tilted her head slightly. "Neither do you."

A flicker of something crossed his face….annoyance, perhaps.

"Wrong answer."

The pressure spiked again, sharper, more targeted. This time it wasn't aimed at her body.

It was aimed at the connection.

Emily gasped softly as something invisible pressed against her mind, probing, testing, trying to force its way deeper.

For a split second, panic flared.

Then something inside her pushed back.

The shadows flared outward, darker than before, swallowing the space around her in a sudden surge that broke the pressure instantly.

Silence followed.

Heavy. Charged.

The taller man exhaled slowly. "There it is."

Her mate didn't wait this time.

He moved.

Fast.

Closing the distance between them in a blur, his energy flaring as he drove forward with a force that cracked against the ground beneath his feet. The second man intercepted him instantly, their clash sending a sharp shock through the air.

Emily barely had time to process it.

The fight had begun.

Not chaotic—but precise.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Her gaze snapped back to the taller man, who hadn't moved at all.

He was still watching her.

Waiting.

"Now" he said softly, "you get to choose."

Emily's chest tightened. "Choose what?"

He stepped forward, stopping just beyond the reach of her shadows.

"What you become."

The words settled into her like a weight.

Behind her, Lena's voice broke again, trembling but determined. "Emily, don't listen to him."

Emily closed her eyes for a brief second.

She could feel everything.

The fight to her side.

The pressure in the air.

The mark burning beneath her skin.

The shadows waiting for her.

Not pulling.

Not forcing.

Waiting.

Her eyes opened again, sharper this time.

Clearer.

When she spoke, her voice didn't shake.

"I'm not choosing what you want."

The man studied her for a long moment.

Then, slowly…

He smiled.

"Good" he said.

And for the first time—

It didn't feel like a threat.

It felt like a beginning.
