Chapter 5 - THE ONE WHO KNOWS

Chapter 5: The One Who Knows.

The shadows thickened..not from the setting sun or drifting clouds but as if the darkness itself was waking, stretching, taking shape. Emily's breath came shallow and ragged, her muscles frozen even though every instinct urged her to flee.

"He's here" she whispered.

Lena squeezed her hand "Emily, there's no one…"

Her words died as the air grew heavy and the path lights flickered, their glow unstable, as though something unseen had slipped into the space between them.

"…Okay" Lena admitted, her voice trembling "This isn't right."

Emily said nothing. Her gaze was fixed on the darkness ahead.

Then a figure emerged, a mere distortion at first, then a single, deliberate step. He stood silent and still, as if the night itself had shaped him into being. A sliver of light revealed a sharp jaw, dark eyes, a controlled expression that revealed nothing and a presence so commanding it felt like a physical weight pressing down on them.

"…You" Emily breathed.

He met her eyes without hesitation. "Your restraint is worse than I expected."

Lena stiffened "Excuse me?"

He ignored her, his attention locked on Emily. "That wasn't restraint" she shot back. "That was me fighting not to break."

A flicker of interest passed through his eyes. "Then you're closer to losing control than I thought."

Lena stepped forward, placing herself slightly ahead of Emily "You can't just show up and talk to her like that."

He stared at Lena for the first time, appraising her as if deciding whether she mattered, Lena held her ground under his gaze.

"…She saw" he said quietly.

Emily's heart clenched. "Yes, She did."

He shifted almost imperceptibly "That complicates matters."

"You think?" Lena retorted, crossing her arms.

Emily's patience snapped. "Stop talking as if she's not here."

He paused. "She shouldn't be here."

"Too late for that" Lena scoffed.

"Enough" Emily cut in. "What do you want?"

His dark eyes never left her "You know what I want."

Her pulse thundered. "No, I don't."

A breath passed between them. Then he said one word, "You."

Lena laughed in disbelief "That's not suspicious at all."

Emily bristled. His tone held no desire….only a chilling purpose. "You awakened tonight " he said softly, "That changes everything."

"I don't even know what that means" she replied.

He nodded, as if unsurprised. "That's the problem."

Silence drifted over them. Emily forced herself to ask, "Explain it then."

His gaze sharpened. "You've been observed."

Emily's blood ran cold. "By who?"

"By those who track anomalies...power surges, instability, anything that defies the rules."

She swallowed hard. "And I'm one of them?"

He gave no hint of sympathy "You're worse."

"Worse?" she echoed.

"You're dangerous."

Lena shook her head "You can't just label her like that…."

"She almost lost control " he interrupted.

Emily swallowed "And if I had?"

A dark glint entered his eyes "You wouldn't be standing here."

Fear, real and icy, twisted in her chest.

"So what….threaten her?" Lena demanded.

He shook his head. "No, I'm here because she can't pretend this isn't happening."

Her pulse quickened. "Then what now?"

He looked at her, measured "Now you come with me."

Lena's eyes widened, "Excuse me?"

"Why would I?" Emily asked.

He remained impassive. "Stay, and you become a target."

"And if I go with you?"

"Then you become something else."

Lena bristled. "Absolutely not."

He didn't even glance at her. "She doesn't get a choice."

Emily's own voice cut in "She does."

He paused…long enough for her to see surprise flash in his eyes. He hadn't counted on resistance.

He stepped closer, each movement deliberate, each footfall silent. Emily felt the shift….the pressure, the heightened awareness. He stopped only a few feet away, close enough for her to study him without distance or pretense.

"You don't understand what you've stumbled into" he said quietly.

"Then make me understand" Emily challenged.

His gaze darkened. "They're already moving."

"Who?"

"The ones who take without asking."

Something deeper than fear stirred within her….something darker. "And when they find me?"

"They won't hesitate."

Emily's fingers tightened into fists. Her resolve sharpened. "…Let them try."

The shadows at her feet shifted again….not violently, but in response. His eyes narrowed with interest "…Good."

Beyond the trees, something else stirred. Emily's body tensed as her instincts screamed, this was no longer a watchful presence. It was a hunter.
