Chapter 41 - The Second Task Begins

The night hadn't ended for Isha.

Even though the sun had risen, even though the world had moved on like nothing had changed… inside her, everything was still shifting. The whispers hadn't stopped. They hadn't faded.

They had become clearer.

Stronger.

And that scared her more than anything else.

She sat near her window, her fingers wrapped loosely around a cup of tea that had long gone cold. Her eyes were fixed outside, but she wasn't really looking at the street.

She was listening.

The faint rustle of leaves.

The distant hum of traffic.

Even the stillness between sounds.

Everything carried a presence now.

"…unstable…"

The whisper brushed past her ear.

Isha closed her eyes slowly.

"I'm trying…" she murmured.

Her voice was calm, but there was a hint of exhaustion in it. Controlling this wasn't easy. Every sound tried to pull her attention. Every small movement felt important.

"Focus on what matters."

The voice responded.

She inhaled deeply and let it out slowly.

Focus.

Right.

She needed direction.

She couldn't just keep listening to everything.

Her mind shifted back to the device.

To the number.

To the location.

And to the fact that someone was watching her.

A knock on her door broke her concentration.

"Isha?" her mother's voice came softly. "Are you okay?"

She opened her eyes instantly.

"I'm fine," she replied, trying to sound normal.

"Come eat something."

"I will."

Footsteps faded away.

Silence returned.

But it wasn't empty anymore.

Nothing was.

She stood up and picked up her phone.

One thought was clear now.

She needed answers.

And the only person who could help her move forward… was Aarav.

She stepped out of the house quickly, not waiting for questions, not waiting for anything. Time felt different now.

Every second mattered.

As she reached the main road, she spotted Karan already there, like he had been waiting.

He looked at her face and sighed lightly. "You didn't sleep again."

She didn't deny it.

"We need to go back," she said directly.

"To Aarav?"

"Yes."

Karan nodded without questioning.

They didn't waste time.

The ride felt shorter today, or maybe her mind was just too occupied to notice.

When they reached Aarav's place, the door was already slightly open.

Karan frowned. "Did he forget to lock it?"

Isha didn't respond.

Something felt off.

"…careful…"

The whisper warned.

Her steps slowed.

She pushed the door open gently.

The room inside was unusually quiet.

Too quiet.

"Aarav?" Karan called out.

No response.

Isha stepped inside slowly, her senses sharp.

The air felt… disturbed.

Not calm like before.

"…late…"

The whisper came again.

Her heart tightened.

They moved further inside.

And then they saw it.

Aarav's laptop was still on… but the screen was flickering.

And Aarav…

was nowhere to be seen.

Karan's expression changed instantly. "This is not good."

Isha walked toward the laptop, her eyes scanning the room quickly.

Nothing looked broken.

No signs of struggle.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

She looked at the screen.

Lines of code were flashing rapidly.

Then suddenly—

The screen went black.

And a single line appeared.

"STOP DIGGING."

Isha froze.

Karan stepped closer. "What the hell…"

The message disappeared.

The screen shut off completely.

Silence filled the room again.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

"They know," Isha whispered.

Karan looked at her. "Of course they know. That device… this whole thing…"

"No," she said, her voice sharper now. "They know about us."

A cold realization settled between them.

This wasn't random anymore.

This was targeted.

"Where is Aarav?" Karan asked, his voice tense.

Isha didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes moved slowly around the room.

Listening.

Waiting.

"…taken…"

The whisper came.

Her breath stopped for a second.

"What?" Karan asked.

She looked at him.

"I think… they took him."

The words felt heavy even as she said them.

Karan clenched his fists. "Who?"

Isha shook her head slightly.

"I don't know yet."

Her gaze shifted back to the table.

To the spot where Aarav usually worked.

Something caught her attention.

A small scratch mark.

Similar to the one they had seen near the pole.

Her heartbeat quickened.

"…same pattern…"

The whisper confirmed.

She moved closer and touched it lightly.

"This isn't random," she said. "It's a mark."

"For what?"

"A sign… maybe."

Karan exhaled sharply. "Great. Now they're leaving signs too?"

Isha ignored the sarcasm.

Her mind was connecting pieces.

Fast.

Too fast.

"They want us to see this," she murmured.

"Why would they want that?"

"To control the game."

Silence.

Karan looked at her like he didn't recognize her anymore.

"You're talking like this is some kind of plan."

"It is."

Her voice was steady.

"Everything is."

The whisper returned again.

"…second task…"

Isha stiffened.

Her eyes widened slightly.

It had started again.

"What now…" she whispered under her breath.

Karan frowned. "What?"

But she didn't answer.

She was listening.

"Find what is hidden… in plain sight."

Her fingers curled slightly.

Hidden.

Plain sight.

Her eyes moved slowly across the room again.

Table.

Chair.

Laptop.

Walls.

Nothing seemed different.

And yet…

everything felt like it was hiding something.

She stepped back slowly, trying to see the room differently.

Not normally.

Differently.

"Think," she whispered to herself.

"Observe."

The voice guided.

Her gaze moved toward the window.

Then the door.

Then—

The floor.

Her breath slowed.

Something about the floor felt… off.

She crouched down slowly, her fingers brushing lightly over the surface.

Dust.

Small marks.

And then…

A slight hollow sound.

Her eyes sharpened.

"There's something here," she said.

Karan moved closer. "What do you mean?"

She tapped the same spot again.

The sound was different.

Not solid.

Hollow.

Karan frowned. "Wait…"

They both looked at each other.

And without wasting time, Karan pulled the edge slightly.

A loose tile shifted.

Isha's heartbeat spiked.

They removed it completely.

And underneath…

was a small hidden compartment.

Inside it…

something moved.

A small animal.

A dog.

Weak.

Scared.

Barely breathing.

Isha's eyes widened instantly.

"Oh my god…"

She reached forward carefully.

The dog flinched slightly.

"…help…"

The whisper came.

But this time…

it didn't feel like the environment.

It felt…

closer.

Different.

Her breath caught.

She looked at the dog again.

Its eyes met hers.

And for a brief second…

everything went silent.

Then—

A faint, broken feeling reached her mind.

Fear.

Pain.

Confusion.

Isha froze.

"What… was that…" she whispered.

Karan looked at her, confused. "What happened?"

She didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

Something had changed again.

The second task had begun.

And this time…

it wasn't just the world speaking.

Something alive… was trying to be heard.
