Chapter 6 - WARNING WRAPPED IN SILK

"Be careful… because men like Kael Draven don't marry women like you…"

Her voice was soft.

Too soft.

Like a secret meant to cut deeper.

"…they destroy them."

The words didn't just linger.

They sank.

Deep.

Sharp.

Unavoidable.

I didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't even blink as Vivienne straightened, her expression returning to that same polished, effortless calm—as if she hadn't just dropped something dangerous into my mind.

As if she hadn't just shaken something inside me.

"Enjoy your evening," she added lightly.

Then she walked away.

Just like that.

Leaving me standing there—

With her warning echoing louder than the music around us.

Kael didn't speak immediately.

But I felt it.

The shift.

The tension tightening in his grip around my waist.

"You shouldn't listen to her."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

But something underneath it—

Something sharp—

Told me he wasn't as unaffected as he looked.

I turned my head slightly.

"Why?"

His jaw tightened.

"She talks too much."

"That's not an answer."

"It's enough."

"No, it's not."

The words came out faster than I expected.

Stronger.

Because something about this—

About her—

About the way she said it—

Didn't feel like a lie.

It felt like truth.

Or at least—

Part of one.

"Who is she?" I asked, my voice quieter now but no less demanding.

Silence.

A beat.

Then—

"Someone irrelevant."

I let out a short breath.

"That's not true."

His eyes snapped to mine.

Sharp.

Cold.

"And how would you know?"

"Because you don't react to irrelevant people."

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

But the moment they did—

Something changed.

Something small.

But noticeable.

Because for the first time—

Kael didn't immediately respond.

And that silence?

It said more than anything else.

"I want the truth."

My voice was steady.

Even though my heart wasn't.

He studied me.

Long.

Hard.

Like he was deciding something.

Then—

"Not tonight."

Frustration flared instantly.

"That's not fair."

"Life isn't fair."

"That's not the point."

"It is," he said calmly. "You're just starting to realize it."

My jaw clenched.

"I deserve to know what I've walked into."

His gaze darkened slightly.

"You know enough."

"No, I don't."

"You know that you signed a contract."

"That's not enough!"

The words came out louder this time.

Drawing attention.

Whispers.

Eyes.

Kael's grip tightened instantly.

Subtle.

Controlled.

But firm.

"Lower your voice."

My chest rose and fell rapidly.

"Then stop treating me like I'm supposed to just accept everything without question."

Silence.

Then—

"Fine."

The word was quiet.

Too quiet.

And something about it made my stomach twist.

Because Kael didn't say things like that lightly.

"Fine?" I repeated cautiously.

His gaze held mine.

Unblinking.

"You want to know who she is?"

My pulse quickened.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"She's someone who thought she understood me."

The answer was vague.

Careful.

Incomplete.

"That doesn't tell me anything."

"It tells you enough."

"No, it doesn't," I insisted. "What happened between you?"

His jaw tightened again.

And this time—

He didn't hide it.

"That's not your concern."

"It is if she's walking up to me and warning me."

His eyes darkened.

"And what exactly did she say?"

My breath caught.

He already knew.

Of course he did.

Still—

I said it.

Because I wanted to see his reaction.

Because I needed to understand.

"She said men like you don't marry women like me…"

A pause.

Then—

"They destroy them."

Silence.

But not the kind I expected.

Not denial.

Not anger.

Something else.

Something heavier.

Something that made my chest tighten.

Because Kael didn't laugh.

Didn't dismiss it.

Didn't even look surprised.

He just…

Watched me.

Carefully.

Like he was measuring my reaction.

And that—

That scared me more than anything.

"Is she wrong?"

The question came out before I could stop it.

And the moment it did—

Everything shifted.

Kael's gaze sharpened.

His expression unreadable.

Dangerous.

"Do you think she is?"

My breath caught.

"That's not an answer."

"It's a question."

"I asked first."

"And I'm asking now."

My heart pounded.

Hard.

Because suddenly—

This didn't feel like a conversation anymore.

It felt like something else.

Something deeper.

Something I didn't fully understand.

"I don't know," I admitted quietly.

And that—

That was the truth.

Because I didn't.

Not anymore.

Not after everything.

Not after the way he looked at me.

The way he controlled everything.

The way he made it feel like I was already his.

Kael stepped closer.

Closing the distance again.

Always closing the distance.

"You should be careful what you believe, Aurelia."

My pulse quickened.

"Why?"

"Because doubt…"

He paused.

His gaze dropping briefly to my lips before returning to my eyes.

"…changes how you behave."

My breath hitched.

"And how do you think I'm behaving?"

A beat.

Then—

"Like you're starting to question me."

My stomach tightened.

"Maybe I am."

Silence.

Then—

His lips curved.

Slightly.

Darkly.

"Good."

My brows furrowed.

"That doesn't bother you?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because it means you're paying attention."

That answer—

It wasn't what I expected.

And somehow—

It unsettled me even more.

"Dance with me."

The words caught me off guard.

"What?"

"Dance."

I blinked.

"I don't want to."

"You're going to."

"I said—"

Before I could finish—

His hand tightened around mine.

Firm.

Unyielding.

And just like that—

I was being pulled forward.

Into the crowd.

Into the center.

Into something I wasn't ready for.

My heart raced as the music shifted.

Slower.

Deeper.

More intimate.

"This is ridiculous," I muttered under my breath as his hand settled at my waist again.

"Relax."

"I am relaxed."

"You're tense."

"Because you're forcing me to dance."

"I'm guiding you."

I let out a short breath.

"That's not the same thing."

"It is to me."

Of course it was.

Because everything with him came down to control.

Even this.

Even something as simple as a dance.

His hand tightened slightly at my waist.

Pulling me closer.

Too close.

My breath caught.

"Kael—"

"Stop thinking."

"What?"

"Stop thinking," he repeated quietly. "And follow."

My pulse quickened.

"I don't follow."

"You will."

"No, I—"

My words cut off as he moved.

Smooth.

Controlled.

Pulling me with him.

And despite myself—

I followed.

Because he didn't give me a choice.

Because his presence was overwhelming.

Because something about the way he held me—

Firm.

Certain.

Unshakable—

Made resistance feel… useless.

My hand rested against his shoulder.

Lightly.

Carefully.

Like I was afraid to touch him.

But he noticed.

Of course he did.

"You're holding back."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I just don't want to—"

"Lie."

The word was soft.

But sharp.

Cutting through everything else.

"I'm not lying."

"You are."

His gaze locked onto mine.

Intense.

Unforgiving.

"You feel it."

My breath hitched again.

"That doesn't mean anything."

"It means everything."

"No, it doesn't," I said quickly, shaking my head. "It's just—"

"Say it."

I froze.

"What?"

"Say what it is."

My heart pounded.

Because I didn't know how.

Because I didn't want to.

Because saying it would make it real.

And I wasn't ready for that.

"I don't have to explain anything to you."

"No," he agreed.

"You don't."

A pause.

Then—

"But you can't hide it either."

My chest tightened.

Because deep down—

I knew he was right.

The music slowed further.

The space between us disappeared.

And suddenly—

Everything felt different.

Closer.

Heavier.

More dangerous.

My fingers tightened slightly against his shoulder.

His grip on my waist responded instantly.

Subtle.

But there.

"You're reacting again."

His voice was lower now.

Rougher.

Closer.

"I'm not—"

"You are."

My breath came faster.

"This is just proximity."

"That's what you said before."

"Because it's true."

"Then why is your heart racing?"

My stomach flipped.

Because he was right.

Again.

And I hated it.

Hated how easily he could read me.

Hated how little control I had over my own reactions.

"Stop doing that," I muttered.

"Doing what?"

"Acting like you know me."

His gaze darkened.

"I do know you."

My breath caught.

"No, you don't."

A pause.

Then—

His voice dropped.

Soft.

Dangerous.

"More than you think."

A chill ran down my spine.

"What does that mean?"

But he didn't answer.

Instead—

He pulled me closer.

Until there was no space left between us.

Until I could feel everything—

His breath.

His heartbeat.

His control.

And suddenly—

Everything else faded.

The music.

The people.

The whispers.

Gone.

All that remained—

Was him.

And the way he looked at me.

Like I was something he had been waiting for.

Something he had already claimed.

Something he wasn't going to let go.

Cliffhanger Line:

And as his hand tightened slightly at my waist, his voice brushing against my ear—

Low.

Possessive.

Unavoidable—

I felt it.

That shift.

That moment where everything changed.

Because the next thing he said…

Wasn't a warning.

It was a promise.

"You still don't understand, Aurelia…"

A pause.

A breath.

Then—

"I didn't just choose you."
