Chapter One: The Night She Smiled While Destroying Me

They say betrayal hurts most when it comes from someone who knows your soul.

They're wrong.

It hurts more when it comes from someone who helped build it.

Her name was Nyra.

My best friend. My sister. My other half.

We grew up together in the war-torn kingdom of Valeris, where magic was both a gift and a curse. I was the stronger one—the prodigy. The girl blessed with rare flame magic that even the royal mages feared.

But Nyra?

She was the one who kept me human.

Or so I thought.

"I'll always stand beside you," she used to say, linking her fingers with mine. "No matter what."

I believed her.

I trusted her.

I would have died for her.

That was my first mistake.

---

The night everything broke, the palace burned.

Flames roared through the royal halls—my flames. Soldiers screamed. Magic clashed against stone. I stood in the center of it all, my hands trembling as fire spiraled uncontrollably around me.

"I didn't do this…" I whispered.

But no one listened.

"Seize her!" the captain shouted. "The Flame Witch has turned against the crown!"

Panic clawed at my chest. This wasn't supposed to happen. I had been summoned to protect the kingdom—not destroy it.

Then I saw her.

Nyra.

Standing across the chaos… untouched by the flames.

And smiling.

Not her usual warm smile.

This one was cold. Sharp. Victorious.

My stomach dropped.

"Nyra…?" My voice cracked.

She stepped forward slowly, her boots echoing against the burning floor. In her hand glowed a dark, unfamiliar magic—something twisted, something forbidden.

"You always were too powerful for your own good," she said softly.

I shook my head, confusion turning into fear. "What are you talking about? Help me—please!"

But she only tilted her head, studying me like I was a stranger.

"No," she said. "I don't think I will."

The soldiers hesitated, clearly unsure.

Nyra turned to them calmly. "She's lost control. You all saw it. The fire obeys her emotions—just like we feared."

"That's a lie!" I shouted. "Nyra, tell them the truth!"

Her eyes met mine.

And for a second—just a second—I searched for the girl I loved like a sister.

She was gone.

"You want the truth?" Nyra whispered, stepping close enough that only I could hear. "I planned this."

My breath stopped.

"What…?"

Her lips curved into that same cruel smile.

"I needed them to fear you," she continued. "To see you as a monster. It was the only way to take your place."

The world around me blurred.

"No… you're lying…"

"Am I?" she murmured. "Who do you think whispered to the council about your 'unstable power'? Who pushed you to train harder, lose control, burn brighter?"

Each word felt like a blade.

"It was always me."

My knees weakened.

"Why?" I choked out. "I trusted you… I loved you…"

Something flickered in her eyes—brief, almost invisible.

Then it vanished.

"Exactly," she said coldly. "That's why it was so easy."

The soldiers moved in.

Chains of enchanted steel wrapped around my wrists, suppressing my magic. I didn't fight.

I couldn't.

Not when the real wound wasn't the betrayal of a kingdom…

But hers.

As they dragged me away, Nyra turned to the captain.

"I'll take responsibility for stopping her," she said calmly. "The kingdom needs a new protector."

A hero.

In my place.

And just like that… she became everything I once was.

---

Hours later, I was thrown into the abyss prison—deep beneath the palace, where light didn't exist and hope went to die.

Alone.

Broken.

Betrayed.

But not empty.

Because beneath the pain… something else was growing.

Something darker.

Something dangerous.

I closed my eyes, replaying her words over and over again.

I planned this.

Slowly, painfully… I began to smile.

"Nyra…" I whispered into the darkness.

"You didn't just betray me."

My voice dropped, steady and cold.

"You created something you won't be able to control."

The air around me flickered.

A spark.

Not flame.

Something deeper.

Something wrong.

And far above, in the palace she stole from me…

Nyra suddenly froze.

As if she felt it too.

What had she really awakened in me… and why did it feel nothing like fire.
