Chapter 11 - The Eyes That Were Not His

Mira stepped back so fast she nearly fell.

Arin was standing again.

But the way he stood was wrong.

Too still.

Too straight.

Like something inside his body was learning how to move.

His eyes were completely black.

No pupil.

No white.

Only endless darkness.

Kael, wounded and barely breathing, gripped his blade tighter.

"Get away from him!" he shouted.

Mira's voice shook. "Arin… can you hear me?"

Slowly, Arin turned toward her.

Then he smiled.

Not Arin's smile.

A colder one.

"You keep calling that name," he said calmly. "It no longer belongs here."

Mira's heart pounded. "Who are you?"

The thing inside Arin looked around the ruined chamber with quiet curiosity.

"Older than your language."

It took one step forward.

The floor beneath its foot turned black and cracked.

Kael charged with a roar, swinging the glowing blade straight at Arin's neck.

The possessed body caught the sword with two fingers.

The glowing symbols on the blade died instantly.

Kael froze.

"That weapon was forged to kill me once," the being said. "Poor craftsmanship."

With a flick of his wrist, Kael flew across the chamber and smashed into a pillar.

Mira ran to him. "Kael!"

He coughed blood. "Listen… the key…"

She looked around. The iron key that Arin had stabbed into himself now lay on the floor, split into two pieces.

Her stomach dropped.

The being walked slowly toward the sealed black door.

Its surface was shaking from the inside.

Something behind it still wanted out.

The being placed a hand on the door gently.

"No patience," it whispered.

The metal melted under its palm.

Mira grabbed a fallen chain and stood between it and the door.

"You're not opening anything."

It looked at her, almost amused.

"You are brave."

The chain flew from her hands by itself and wrapped around her wrists, pinning her to a pillar.

She struggled. "Let me go!"

The being leaned closer.

"I remember your face."

Mira froze.

"What?"

"It was the same face," it said softly, "the night your mother begged for mercy."

Mira's breath stopped.

Kael shouted, "Don't listen to him!"

But Mira was shaking now.

"My mother… you knew my mother?"

The being smiled faintly.

"She died protecting the boy you call Arin."

Mira turned toward Arin's body in horror.

"No…"

Kael dragged himself forward. "Mira! He lies!"

The chamber began to tremble again.

This time, not from the door.

From above.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the mansion overhead.

Many footsteps.

Dozens.

Then came voices.

Low.

Whispering.

Chanting the same words again and again.

Open the blood. Open the blood. Open the blood.

Mira stared upward.

"Who's there?"

Kael's face lost all color.

"They found us."

The being inside Arin smiled wider.

At the ceiling.

"At last."

Then the entire roof cracked open—

And hooded figures began dropping into the chamber one by one.

Each wore the same symbol carved on Arin's key.

And the last person to land removed their hood.

Mira gasped.

It was Arin's father.

Alive.
