Chapter 22: The Council Falls

Blood-sigil signatures were going dark across the network.

The first termination registered at 11:47 PM — Lord Strix, whose glyph status I'd tracked from partial to complete at the blood rave. His signature didn't fade gradually; it collapsed. The specific pattern of forced UV exposure, photonic energy discharge spiking through his covenant architecture before the entire structure went silent.

The second came nineteen minutes later. Lady Corvus. Same pattern.

[Blood-Sigil Alert: Council Member Termination Cascade Detected]

[Active signatures: 10/12 → 8/12. Status: CRITICAL]

I activated full Transparent World and pushed the range to maximum, burning through VE at a rate I couldn't sustain for long. The network architecture showed me what was happening: Frost's open-move phase had become an execution phase. The remaining Council members were being processed with industrial efficiency.

Not all of them were dying.

The third signature — Lord Aldric, whose biological material had given me Tier 2 — showed a different pattern. Not termination. Transport. His blood-sigil was moving through the city while his covenant architecture showed the specific stress markers of incapacitation. Sedation, probably. Or physical restraint augmented with blood-covenant compulsion.

The fourth signature. The fifth. The sixth.

Over forty-eight hours, I watched seven Council members transition from active to terminated. Different methods: UV exposure, violent physical termination, at least two who appeared to have been fed upon to the point of exsanguination. Frost wasn't being elegant. He was being efficient.

"Each termination clears one ritual vessel slot. The Council members who are already marked with La Magra glyphs are the vessels — and they are being transported, not killed."

The pattern became clear through the network data. Terminated signatures were the Council members who had resisted the glyph marking or whose political positions made them threats to Frost's post-ritual governance plans. Transported signatures were the vessels. Twelve slots. Twelve marked pure-bloods. Frost was collecting them.

[Council Status: 5/12 Active. 7/12 Terminated/Transported.]

[Transport Convergence Point: Subsurface Structure, Lower Manhattan.]

The convergence was visible through the blood-sigil architecture. Twelve La Magra-marked signatures clustering at a single location, their combined covenant resonance producing a specific frequency in the network that my Tier 2 perception could partially read.

The temple location was confirmed.

I pulled up the architectural data on the convergence point.

The subsurface structure was approximately 200 meters below street level — old infrastructure, pre-war construction, the kind of space that existed in the city's foundations without appearing on modern maps. The blood-sigil architecture activating inside showed characteristics I recognized from my Pearl archive read: directional power flow, twelve vessel anchor points, a central transformation space where the accumulated covenant energy would concentrate.

"The ritual space is manifesting. As the vessels arrive, the architecture becomes visible."

I keyed the secure line.

"Cascade continuing. Seven confirmed — three terminated, four transported. Temple location is subsurface, lower Manhattan, approximately 200 meters below the exchange district. I'm reading La Magra architectural activation as the vessels converge."

Blade's voice came back flat. "I'm tracking."

"You're aware of the timeline?"

"Frost is ahead of schedule."

"He's been ahead of schedule since he killed Dragonetti." I watched another blood-sigil — Lady Moira, the coverage gap I'd never resolved — transition from active to transport status. "The remaining Council members are being processed now. Based on convergence rate, ritual readiness in twelve to eighteen hours."

Silence on the line. Blade processing the compressed timeline.

"Two of the Council signatures I had listed as incomplete marking are now showing full glyph activation," I continued. "Frost found a completion mechanism my network missed."

"What mechanism?"

"Unknown. My projections assumed the glyph application required extended proximity and covenant pressure. Either he accelerated the process or he had a method I didn't identify."

More silence. Then: "I need to reach Karen."

The line went quiet.

I sat in the lab and watched the last Council member's signature transition from active to transport-incapacitated.

[Council Status: 0/12 Active. All members terminated or transported.]

[La Magra Vessel Array: FULLY POPULATED. Ritual readiness: 12-18 hours.]

The vampire hierarchy that had been running this city for centuries had been dismantled in forty-eight hours. One turned vampire, angrier about a structural injustice than anyone had given him credit for, had systematically eliminated or captured the entire pure-blood establishment.

"Frost was right about the problem."

I filed that observation under the category of uncomfortable truths that didn't change the operational picture. Frost being right about the injustice of the vampire caste system didn't make his solution acceptable. The La Magra ritual would transform him into a blood god — and blood gods didn't historically show much interest in social reform.

The synthesis workstation showed Day 7/14 on the Tier 3 preparation. Five days ago, I'd been running routine network maintenance. Now the ritual was twelve hours closer than projected and I was seven days away from capabilities I might need.

"Adapt. The timeline has compressed. Adjust the operational approach to match."

I pulled up the temple location data and began calculating observation positions. If I couldn't reach Tier 3 before the ritual, I could at least provide real-time intelligence support for Blade's operation. The subsurface location would limit my Transparent World range, but the convergence of twelve La Magra signatures in one space would make the blood-sigil architecture readable from further than normal.

The field kit was already packed. I'd been keeping it ready since the Dragonetti killing.

I texted a single message through the secure line: "Synthesis paused. In position. Ready on your signal."

Then I picked up the field kit and walked toward the temple district.
