Chapter 3 - The Long-Awaited Scene!

"Why didn't he kill me?"

The female Skrill yawned and stretched her joints, hearing a series of pleasant cracks.

"Good morning," she said, walking toward the lake.

"Good... morning," the Night Fury replied hesitantly.

She managed to catch a fish for herself and swallowed it whole. Watching the black dragon had helped her a lot.

"Hide," Toothless warned, moving behind a rock.

The girl rolled her eyes but did as the Fury said. She hid among some bushes, doing her best to stay out of sight- though it wasn't easy with a bright white body.

(Hiccup) she thought, feeling strangely excited.

The young Viking tossed two fish and tried to approach with his shield, but it didn't go very well- the Skrill almost gave herself away.

Hiccup picked up both fish and began looking around carefully. Toothless was watching him from atop the rock behind. Hiccup turned around and gasped when he saw the Night Fury approaching.

"Uhm, salmon maybe?"nthe female murmured, also stepping closer.

Toothless growled lowly and kept advancing, ready to take the offered fish- but when he saw the knife, he backed up and growled louder. Hiccup quickly realized and threw the knife away into the lake.

Toothless stepped forward and opened his mouth, waiting for the fish.

"Uh, Toothless?" Hiccup looked confused "I could've sworn you had-" Toothless grew impatient and bared his gums, grabbing the fish easily "-teeth."

The female Skrill approached, sniffing curiously. Hiccup heard her and turned, surprised at how close she'd gotten. He threw the fish, and she immediately caught it and devoured it.

"Whoa... your scales look... like the moon or snow" he murmured in awe.

That earned a soft, pleased rumble from her.

But his attention quickly turned back to the Fury- which immediately disappointed the Skrill.

Toothless moved closer, while Hiccup stumbled backward.

"Eh-ah," he tripped and slid back "No, no, ah-I-" his back hit the rock "That's all I've got!"

Toothless got close to his face... and regurgitated part of the fish.

Hiccup made a disgusted face. The dragon sat down expectantly, waiting for him to eat it.

Hiccup did- reluctantly, with visible nausea.

"Uhmm! Uh-uhm!" he forced himself to chew, but the dragon wasn't satisfied until Hiccup swallowed.

Then Hiccup gave a small, nervous smile when he saw Toothless try to imitate it.

The Fury struggled, but managed to copy his smile, awkwardly.

Hiccup slowly stood up, reaching a hand toward him- but Toothless bared his teeth and growled, pulling away and trying to fly.

"Uhm," the Skrill rolled her eyes and went to catch more fish.

Toothless made a small fire patch to warm the ground and lay down, ready for a nap. But when he looked up, he saw a cliff- a painful reminder that he couldn't fly.

Hiccup moved closer again, trying to bond.

"Don't bother, that one's grumpy," the female huffed.

"Leave me alone," the Fury muttered, getting up.

Toothless went to hang upside-down from a tree like a bat. Hiccup turned away from him and approached the other dragon instead.

The female greeted him more warmly, not growling or pushing him away. Hiccup took it as an invitation and gently placed his palm on her head, feeling her scales- rough but strangely soft.

"Whoa..." he breathed.

But the female quickly pulled back, gliding onto a nearby rock. She stayed there for a while, watching him, then drifted to sleep.

They both woke at the same time and saw Hiccup doing something on the ground. Curious, they approached.

He was drawing- them- in the dirt.

"Pretty," she sighed softly.

Hiccup felt their breath on his back but stayed silent, continuing to draw.

Then Toothless got an idea- he grabbed a tree branch and used it as a "pencil," scratching marks into the earth.

The Skrill quickly moved aside, watching.

"What's that supposed to be?" she asked, tilting her head.

"The same thing the Viking's doing," he answered with some difficulty, holding the branch in his teeth.

The human and the Skrill watched as he finished his sketch with a dot, tossing the branch away.

Hiccup smiled and stepped asid - accidentally stepping on one of the lines, making the Fury growl.

Hiccup quickly lifted his foot- the growling stopped.

He set it down again- growl.

Lifted- silence.

He repeated it a few times, then stepped outside the lines- and the dragon calmed down completely.

(Oh wow... this scene!) the girl-dragon thought excitedly, doing her best to stay quiet.

Hiccup started walking carefully, watching his steps.

It led him closer to the Fury. The dragon met his eyes- calm, soft.

Hiccup reached his hand out toward his snout, but the Fury growled- the boy's eyes still open, untrusting.

So Hiccup decided to trust the dragon- he turned his head aside and closed his eyes.

(It's happening, it's happening!) she thought, holding back a squeal.

Then it happened- that moment.

Hiccup touched Toothless's snout.

Sadly, it lasted only a few seconds before the Fury flew off.

"Yeah... it's even better seeing it in person," the Skrill murmured with a smile.

The Skrill woke up early from her pleasant sleep.

"Why so grumpy?" she asked, raising a brow- well, dragons don't really have eyebrows.

"I'm not grumpy," he huffed.

"You act like it sometimes," she laughed heartily.

The Fury snorted again and went to hide in the shadows.

She gave a smug little look and went for a drink at the spring. That's when she heard footsteps- Hiccup's.

(Could it be...?) she thought, taking a few more sips before lifting her head to look at him.

Hiccup didn't feel uneasy under her gaze- a gaze that seemed to look straight into his soul.

The Viking approached the female carefully, slowly. He lifted his hand toward her snout and tilted his head aside, closing his eyes — trusting her.

(Holy crap, he did it!) she thought, thrilled.

Without hesitation, she leaned in and touched her snout to his hand- (Got an idea)- and then licked it.

Hiccup made a disgusted face- which she found hilarious, bursting into laughter.
