"Ouch," Pia whimpered, tucking her tail. "That was mean. That was really mean, Waverly. I want to bite him, but I also want to cry. Why is he being so prickly? Does he think we're just here for the free room service?"

I felt the sting of it behind my eyes. I knew it was my fault—I was the one who had demanded money in exchange for my silence, the one who had threatened him—but hearing him say I was "undeserving" felt like a knife to the chest.

"Are you two fighting?" Rose asked, her empathic senses clearly picking up on the toxic cloud of resentment between us.

"No," I said quickly, gulping down the thickness in my throat. "It's fine, Rose. It's my fault. I... I just need to go." I looked at Kaeren, trying to keep my expression steady. "I'll come to your suite after I drop this off and take a quick shower. I just went to get... supplies."
