The records room was cold.

Gregory didn't know why the district kept the historical staffing files in a basement storage area with inadequate climate control, but the temperature was low enough that he could see his breath if he exhaled slowly.

He had been down here three times this week.

The filing system was alphabetical by decade, which made cross-referencing difficult. Gregory had developed a system: legal pad for notes, colored flags for files requiring follow-up, a small flashlight for the sections where the overhead lighting was inadequate.

Today he was looking for patterns.

The credential gap in Aldric Chase's file had led him here. Not because he expected to find an explanation—database errors didn't leave paper trails in basement archives—but because Gregory Eddie did not leave questions unanswered.

His investigation had evolved.

"Who" had been the first question. Who was Aldric Chase? The answer was documented: substitute teacher, Pennsylvania certification, legitimate institution.

"How" had been the second question. How was he performing at a level that didn't match his documentation? The answer was unclear but observable: something was happening that Gregory couldn't categorize.

"Why" had replaced both questions. Why was this person at Abbott? Why did he stay through the regression phase? Why did students like Marcus respond to him differently than they responded to other teachers?

But "why" wasn't enough anymore.

Gregory had added a new question to his notebook: "Who are his people here?"

The question acknowledged something Gregory had observed but couldn't explain. Aldric Chase had no history at Abbott. No prior relationships with staff. No connections that predated his arrival.

But he behaved like someone who belonged.

The staffing records from 2015-2019 were in the third row, bottom shelf.

Gregory pulled the files methodically, checking each one against his timeline. He wasn't looking for anything specific—just patterns, anomalies, anything that might connect to the larger picture he was building.

At 3:47, he found a name.

Dr. Patricia Okafor. Third-grade teacher. Hired 2008. Eleven-year tenure. Departure: 2019.

The departure reason was listed as "voluntary resignation — personal."

Gregory wrote the name in his notebook. He underlined it once.

"Eleven years," he thought. "Long tenure for an elementary school teacher. Unusual to leave after that investment."

He pulled Okafor's full file. Employment history, performance reviews, professional development records. The documentation was thorough—Abbott had been better at record-keeping in the 2010s than it was now.

The file contained nothing unusual. Okafor had been a competent teacher. Her reviews were consistently positive. Her departure had been orderly—proper notice, transition documentation, no disciplinary issues.

But something about the timeline bothered Gregory.

He checked his notes. The credential gap in Aldric's file. The irregular staffing situation he had found in Monday's research. A three-year period where Abbott's substitute records were unusually sparse.

The dates clustered.

Okafor's departure: 2019.

The records gap: 2019-2022.

Aldric's arrival: This semester.

Gregory did not believe in coincidences. He also did not believe in conclusions without evidence. The clustering was a pattern requiring explanation, not an explanation itself.

He wrote in his notebook: "Timeline overlap. Three data points. Pattern: emerging. Explanation: pending."

Barbara was in the hallway when Gregory emerged from the records room at 4:15.

She was carrying a stack of papers—grading, probably, or administrative forms. Her pace was unhurried. Her expression was neutral.

"You've been in the records room three times this week," she said.

The observation was not a question.

Gregory considered his response. Barbara Howard did not make idle comments. If she was noting his research activity, she had a reason.

"I have," he said.

"Finding what you're looking for?"

"I don't know yet."

Barbara's expression didn't change.

"The records room has gaps," she said. "Things that got misfiled. Things that got lost when the district switched database systems. Things that someone decided didn't need to be kept."

"I've noticed."

"Some gaps are administrative errors. Some gaps are intentional." Barbara adjusted her stack of papers. "The question is whether you can tell the difference."

She continued walking.

Gregory watched her go.

"She knows something," he thought. "Or she suspects something. She's watching me investigate and she's not stopping me, but she's also not helping."

He added a line to his notebook: "Barbara — aware of investigation. Not obstructing. Not assisting. Position: unclear."

Gregory observed Aldric in the hallway at 4:32.

He positioned himself near the faculty bulletin board, where he had a clear sightline to the main corridor. Not confrontational. Just documenting.

Aldric walked past carrying his laminator tote—the same one he had brought on his first day, the same one Melissa had noticed before she noticed anything else about him. He greeted a student by name. He took the same route to the break room he had taken every day for five weeks.

Gregory watched for tells. Nervousness. Awareness of surveillance. Behavioral changes that might indicate consciousness of being observed.

He found none.

Aldric walked like someone who belonged at Abbott Elementary. Not like someone performing belonging. Like someone who simply was where he was supposed to be.

Gregory added two lines to his notebook:

"Behavior: consistent with previous observations."

"Interpretation: either genuine or very well practiced. Insufficient data to distinguish."

He closed the notebook.

The timeline Gregory had built contained seven entries.

Something else had happened during that window.

Gregory marked the gap with a bracket. He wrote the word "why" again.

"Why are these years different? Why is the documentation incomplete? Why did Okafor leave after eleven years and why does nobody talk about her?"

The questions accumulated in his notebook. The answers remained out of reach.

But Gregory Eddie did not leave questions unanswered.

He would keep looking.

The records room closed at 5:00 PM.

Gregory gathered his materials—legal pad, colored flags, flashlight—and returned the Okafor file to its place on the bottom shelf. He would come back. He would keep building the timeline. He would find the pattern that connected everything.

But for now, the investigation was paused.

Not abandoned. Never abandoned.

Just waiting for the next piece of evidence to emerge.
