Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: A Life-and-Death Showdown

"You're really going this far for a horse girl you don't even know?!"

The God of Misfortune was furious.

She had been attached to Rice Shower since she was little. She had never once seen Tang Han before, which meant there was no way Tang Han and Rice Shower knew each other.

And yet this guy was charging in with everything he had for the sake of a horse girl he had never met, dead set on driving the misfortune away from her, even if it meant rolling around on the ground to do it...

Was that even reasonable?

What was he, some idiot hot-blooded shonen protagonist?

If Tang Han knew what the God of Misfortune was thinking, he definitely would have objected.

First, he did know Rice Shower—he was her cloud big brother, thank you very much. Second, he was not some boneheaded battle manga protagonist who would risk everything for a stranger. He was only doing this to complete the mission and survive.

He was struggling for his life!

"Almost there!"

Because of his posture, Tang Han could not see what was happening ahead of him, but he could feel it—he was just about at Rice Shower's side. The God of Misfortune's tricks for numbing his limbs were no longer enough to stop him. Everything seemed to be developing in a positive direction.

But since Tang Han was facing the God of Misfortune, if nothing went wrong, then something was bound to go wrong.

Just as Tang Han got within one meter of Rice Shower, an unknown horse girl suddenly came charging in from the side.

"Sorry! Emergency! Make way!"

She seemed to be in a hurry and was sprinting straight through the path ahead.

Tang Han, rolling forward, had no way to dodge.

He slammed directly into her.

"Bugh!"

Tang Han was sent flying and tumbled across the ground several times.

"Huh? Did I just hit something?"

The unidentified horse girl scratched her head in confusion, not noticing Tang Han sprawled on the ground at all.

"Rice Shower-san."

She looked toward Rice Shower, the closest person nearby.

"Y-Yes!"

Startled by being addressed so suddenly, Rice Shower answered nervously.

"Did I hit you just now?"

"N-No..."

Rice Shower shook her head.

"Hm... strange. I really felt like I ran into something..."

The unknown horse girl tilted her head.

"Whatever. I paid a fortune for that potion today. I've got to hurry back and mix it into Trainer's tea so we can enjoy our happy little world... just the two... of... us..."

The culprit horse girl, having no idea she had just rammed into a human being, cheerfully left. Meanwhile, the victim, Tang Han, lay on the ground unable to get up for quite some time.

The God of Misfortune laughed uproariously.

"It's useless! The closer you get to her, the greater the flood of disaster you'll suffer! The more dangerous your own situation becomes! You'll never be able to touch that little girl!"

"Wonder of U!"

I told you to stop making JoJo references! How many people are actually going to get that?!

"I'll warn you one more time, God of Fortune—don't come any closer. If you do, you'll die."

The God of Misfortune glared at Tang Han viciously.

It sounded like she was letting him off easy, but in reality that was not the case at all.

If she had already built up enough curse power to kill a person, then Tang Han should have died the moment that horse girl rammed into him just now, instead of merely being numb all over.

Every time she cursed Tang Han, it consumed the stockpile of misfortune she had accumulated.

Just now, summoning that random horse girl to create an "accident" had used up all her energy. If Tang Han kept approaching, then she would not have enough left to summon another one to run him over properly.

"So much pain..."

Tang Han tried to force himself back up through sheer willpower, but the pain wracking his body made him collapse again almost at once.

A horse girl's impact was terrifying. It felt like being hit by a speeding compact car. His head buzzed violently, and he had come dangerously close to dying on the spot.

Even if he had not died, he was still injured. Standing up was already difficult, let alone continuing to get closer to Rice Shower.

Seeing Tang Han unable to move, the God of Misfortune let out a quiet breath of relief.

"Stop. It's already over. The winner's been decided."

A smug smile curved across her lips as she shook her head.

"You can't even produce the faintest ripple anymore. Look at you—you've lost so much blood already. That means you're beyond saving."

"Farewell. Your life ends here."

After saying that, the God of Misfortune turned her back on him and stopped looking his way.

I already told you to quit with the JoJo bits! Are you seriously trying to make me say, "This is my final ripple" too?!

"..."

Tang Han stared blankly for a moment, then looked down at his body—which was not bleeding at all—and pressed a hand to his chest, where his heart was still beating perfectly normally.

He was nowhere near as doomed as the God of Misfortune claimed. On the contrary, he had only suffered a bit of injury. No broken bones, nothing fatal—he just could not move for the moment.

"No. Something's off."

Tang Han frowned.

With the body of a normal human, how could he have been slammed by a horse girl running at high speed and not even suffered a fracture?

It was almost as though...

The damage had been reduced.

Then Tang Han suddenly realized something.

"You."

He fixed his gaze on the God of Misfortune.

"Your curse power is limited, isn't it?"

He was speaking through thought, not aloud—because whenever he tried opening his mouth, the God of Misfortune blocked his voice.

The God of Misfortune's entire body jolted.

"W-What are you talking about? I have no idea what you mean."

Cold sweat broke out on her face.

No way. Had this guy figured something out?

"I knew it..."

Tang Han got all the confirmation he needed from her reaction.

"As the saying goes, a person can't be unlucky forever. Even if Rice Shower is an unfortunate horse girl, she wouldn't be tripping into bad luck every few steps for no reason."

"You said the closer I got, the greater the flood of calamity I'd suffer. But just now, only I was cursed. The other horse girls passing near Rice Shower weren't affected at all."

"And when I got hit by that horse girl, I still didn't break anything. I just couldn't move..."

"There's only one truth!"

Tang Han pushed up a pair of glasses that did not exist.

"Your curse ability has limits—and you're almost out!"

"Damn it..."

The God of Misfortune's face darkened.

He had figured out her secret that easily?!

How was this guy so smart...?

Whether it was his determination to achieve his goal, or the intelligence to rapidly assess the situation and improvise a solution on the fly, he was nothing like the usual setting of the Uma Musume world, where everyone was either soft-hearted, dense, or both.

People like you need to get the hell out of the Uma Musume world! Wouldn't the JoJo universe suit you way better for mind games?! If you're this smart, how are horse girls supposed to trick you into a basement and jump you to death, you bastard?!

After cursing Tang Han in her heart for a while, the God of Misfortune quickly calmed down again.

Because the outcome had already been decided. Even if Tang Han knew her secret now, it would not change anything.

"You can't move anymore. So what if you know the truth? How exactly are you planning to get any closer? Just lie there obediently and wait for some other horse girl to step on you to death!"

After throwing out that final threat, the God of Misfortune ignored Tang Han completely and drifted off in the direction of the cafeteria together with Rice Shower.

Watching Rice Shower's dejected back as she walked away, Tang Han let out a bitter laugh.

She was right.

His body really was completely finished. He could not even stand up anymore, let alone hand the lucky sachet to Rice Shower.

Had Tang Han... lost?
