Chapter 40 - The Observer

The menacing presence returned before they could even react.

It materialized directly from the air. A violent distortion folded the Void and made Cale's teeth ache with intense cold pressure. Revenant hissed and pressed himself flat against Cale's shadow in an instinctive gesture of defense.

The owner of the dark aura stepped out of the distortion.

It looked humanoid but was fundamentally not human. Standing far taller than any man, its lean frame held dense muscle beneath skin the color of a deep ocean trench. Thick blue veins surged beneath the surface of his skin. Its shoulders were armored with scales and spikes. Its face was a collection of cruel angles. It had solid gold eyes that reflected nothing. It wore no clothing, but it's bare skin carried authority. It smiled. The expression was a cold movement of flesh that never reached its eyes.

"Ah," it said. The voice was smooth and sounded like it had been speaking for centuries. "You felt me watching. Excellent. I was beginning to think you two were dull."

Cale's hand closed instantly around the hilt of Soul Drinker. Val ignited tongues of flame on her palms in a desperate defensive arc. Revenant moved forward from the shadow in a bid to attack.

The beast casually raised a single hand.

Revenant flew backward like he caught a raging ram to the chest. The entity slammed violently into the solid stone wall and stuck flat against the rock, as if pinned by invisible chains. It struggled against the restriction. Its claws tore uselessly at the stone while its wings beat against the air. It could not move an inch.

The beast lowered its hand. "A curious thing. That's three distinct fallen beasts cores melted into a single system vessel. I have not seen such work in centuries." Its gold eyes slid toward Cale. "You made it?"

Cale did not answer. His grip on his sword turned his knuckles white.

"No matter." The beast settled onto a nearby boulder and crossed its long legs. "You have questions. I have an abundance of time. Ask away, if you may."

Val's voice cut through the cold air, sharp and demanding. "What the hell are you?"

"What am I?" It smiled again. " That's a good question, what am I? I am what your kind calls an S Rank Fallen Terror. By your people's logic, I should tear you both apart where you stand." It tilted its head. "But I find you interesting. So I will answer your questions instead."

Cale spoke low, his voice raspy with exhaustion. "The nest… The portal. Did you left it open on purpose?"

"I opened it. I carved those markings into the stone walls." Its gold eyes stared with quiet malice. "I wanted to lure people like you in."

"Why?"

"Because humans are fascinating creatures. You build cities, forge weapons, and teach your fragile children to kill things that have lived before your ancestors crawled out of the mud. You are weak, you die fast, and yet you persist." It leaned forward. Its presence crushed the air out of the crevice. "And you two are no different." It looked from Val to Cale. "I simply wanted to see what you would do."

"So you trapped us, you absolute bastard," Val said, her voice dropping into a dangerous register.

"I opened a door. You chose to walk through." It spread its hands wide. "I am not your enemy. I am not your friend. I am simply an observer. And you are the most interesting thing to happen in this godforsaken region in a hundred years."

Cale tightened his jaw until the bone ached. "We didn't walk in, your stupid portal drew a shit load of things in… including us. So tell me, What the hell do you want from us?"

The beast widened its smile, revealing rows of pale teeth. "Fun."

It rose from the boulder and paced slowly across the black sand. Its footsteps were entirely silent.

"You see, those beasts that fled when the nest collapsed, the ones your warriors chased into the woods, they have orders to scatter. They will dig into the earth. They will create new nests. They will absolutely be smaller than mine. But they will keep your kind busy. They will keep you occupied." It glanced back at them. "Consider it a gift."

Val curled her hands into tight fists. "You are letting them slaughter innocent people. That's bullshit."

"I am letting you work to save your so called innocent people. There is a distinct difference." Its voice remained calm. "I could have closed that portal before your boots ever touched the perimeter. I could have let the tide of the nest ambush your entire academy. Instead, I let you in. I let you run. I let you both find each other." It stopped and turned its towering frame to face them fully. "And I will let you go. Eventually. When I have seen enough."

"Why?" Cale asked, his voice barely a whisper against the wind.

"Because I have lived too long to rush my meals." Its gold eyes narrowed in the twilight. "And because watching you fight, struggle, and desperately survive, is what I find entertaining."

It stepped backward and moved into a patch of distorting air. Its form wavered and began to fade into the grey environment.

"My name," it said, the smooth voice already sounding distant and hollow, "is Azrakel. I have ruled this region of the Void since before your great grandparents were born. I will be watching, Caelan. Do not disappoint me."

It raised a hand in a casual, mocking farewell. "Oh, and do try not to die too quickly. That would be incredibly boring."

The distortion vanished. The crushing presence lifted instantly like a physical weight removed from Cale's chest.

How the hell did he know my name. He thought.

Revenant fell from the stone wall and landed hard on his hands and knees. The shadow entity folded its wings tightly against its back. Its gold eyes fixed with a venomous glare of fear on the empty air where the Terror had just stood.

Val let out a long breath she had not realized she was holding. "What the actual hell was that thing?"

Cale stared at the empty space. His hands shook despite his best efforts to control them.

"Our way out," he said, his voice flat and hard. "Or our way into a massive shitstorm."

He did not know which reality was more terrifying.
