Chapter 6 - The Bouncer

Marcus Webb left Velvet nightclub at 2:15 AM and walked four blocks to a parking garage on Vine where he kept a black Dodge Charger with tinted windows and a dent in the rear bumper he'd never fixed.

Cain had been watching him for two days. Enough time to confirm what the grid already told him and to add the details that made the difference between knowing someone's file and knowing someone's life.

Marcus was large. Six-three, two-forty, the kind of build that came from boxing in his twenties and maintenance lifting in his thirties. He moved with a compressed energy, even when he was tired, like a spring that never fully extended. His hands were big enough to palm a basketball and rough enough that you'd hear them coming before you felt them.

He was also, according to the chess vision, a man who disposed of human bodies for five hundred dollars each.

Marcus Webb. 36. Bouncer, Velvet nightclub. Weakness: mother. Judith Webb. Green Meadows Care Facility, Room 214. Multiple sclerosis, stage 3. Monthly cost: $4,200. Fear: being seen as the thing he is. Secret: three bodies. Eduardo Vance (November). James Pak (February). Unknown female (August). Buried under the loading dock at Velvet's rear lot. $500 per body. Club owner arranges, Marcus executes.

And the new depth that Morrow's consumption had unlocked:

Secondary weakness: self-image. Sees himself as protector. Cannot reconcile violence-as-work with violence-as-pleasure. Uses mother's illness to justify both. Behavioral note: enjoys small acts of cruelty during shift (unnecessary force on patrons). Does not acknowledge this enjoyment consciously. The gap between who he thinks he is and who he actually is grows wider with each act.

That gap was the target. Not the bodies, not the money, not the mother. The gap.

Cain watched Marcus work on the second night. Positioned himself at the edge of Velvet's parking lot, behind a dumpster that smelled like stale beer and poor decisions, and observed through the grid's enhanced vision.

Marcus ran the door with professional restraint. Checked IDs, managed the line, turned away underage kids with a shake of his head that said don't push it, don't make me push you. He was good at the job. Controlled, measured, the kind of bouncer that club owners paid premium for because he prevented lawsuits rather than causing them.

Except.

Three times during the four-hour window Cain observed, Marcus handled a situation that didn't require force with exactly that. A drunk college kid who'd lost his ID got his face pushed into the brick wall. Not slammed — pushed. Controlled. Deliberate. The kind of violence that leaves marks but not lawsuits. A woman who argued about the cover charge got her arm grabbed hard enough to bruise. She yelped. Marcus let go immediately, his face blank, and said "Ma'am, please step aside" in a tone that made the words sound reasonable and the grab look like her fault.

And each time, afterward, Marcus's face did something. Not a smile. More like a settling. A frequency shift. The way a cat looks after catching something — not triumphant, just satisfied. Back to baseline.

He enjoyed it. Not the job. Not the bodies. The small cruelties. The ones he could do openly, in public, and explain away as professionalism.

Cain filed all of this. On the third morning, at 2:15 AM, he followed Marcus to the parking garage.

Third level. Bad lighting. Empty except for Marcus's Charger and a minivan nobody had moved in weeks. The fluorescent tubes above buzzed at a frequency that sounded like insects trapped in glass.

"Hey."

Marcus turned. He was faster than his size suggested. His hands came up instinctively, guard position, the muscle memory of a man who'd spent five years getting hit for sport before deciding he preferred hitting people who couldn't hit back.

He saw Cain. Scanned him. Gray coat, too-big shoes, a frame that weighed maybe 160 soaking wet. Not a threat. Not to someone Marcus's size.

"Garage is closed, man. Get out."

"Let's play," Cain said.

The crack came faster this time. The garage sounds, the fluorescent buzz, the distant traffic — all of it flattened in under a second. The concrete floor became the board. The parked cars faded to silhouettes, then to nothing.

Marcus stumbled. He was big enough that stumbling looked like a building swaying in an earthquake. His hands came up higher, guard tighter, the boxer brain clicking on ahead of everything else.

"What the fu—"

The board appeared between them. Pieces set. Marcus's information materialized beside his head. He read it — the bodies, the mother, the names — and went very, very still.

Unlike Morrow, who'd gone pale and started reaching for authority, Marcus just froze. The stillness of a man who'd been caught before, in a different life, and knew from experience that movement got you hit.

"Three moves each," Cain said. "Winner takes everything."

Marcus stared at his own file floating in the air. Then he stared at Cain. Then he did something Morrow hadn't done.

He tried to hit him.

The right cross was fast. Faster than a man that size should have been. Aimed at Cain's temple, thrown with the rotational efficiency of someone who'd drilled that punch ten thousand times in a gym with mirrors and a coach who yelled about hip rotation.

The fist passed through Cain like he was made of smoke.

Marcus's momentum carried him forward. He stumbled again, caught himself on nothing because the floor that looked solid was the board and the board had its own opinions about physics.

"Violence isn't a move." Cain hadn't flinched. Hadn't even shifted his weight. "It's not on the board. You want out, you play."

Marcus straightened up. His fists were still raised but they were shaking now. Not fear. Adrenaline with no target. A fighter's worst nightmare — all the power in the world and nothing to hit.

"Your move," Cain said.

Marcus's Move 1: "I know people. The owner of Velvet has muscle you've never seen. One call and they'll find you."

White pawn forward. Same play as Morrow. Borrowed authority. Call the boss, call the muscle. It was the only language Pawns spoke — I'm protected by something bigger than me.

LEVERAGE: employer's resources.

Cain's Move 1: "Velvet's rear lot. Loading dock. Three bodies. Eduardo Vance, November. James Pak, February. Unnamed woman, August. All buried within six feet of each other, three feet deep, wrapped in contractor bags. The club owner paid you $500 each, which means he knows, which means calling him just adds a witness to three murder charges."

Black pawn forward. Marcus's pawn flickered.

The names did something to him. Not the fact of the bodies — he'd made peace with those, or whatever version of peace involves not thinking. But the names. Eduardo Vance. James Pak. These had been people with names, and hearing those names spoken by a stranger in a parking garage at 2 AM was like having a scab torn off a wound he'd forgotten he was still carrying.

"How do you know those names?" His voice was lower now. Controlled. The boxer brain running calculations, assessing range, looking for angles.

"I know everything about you, Marcus. Everything you've done, everything you tell yourself about why you did it. I know about Room 214. I know about the $500. I know that you tell yourself it's for your mother, and that's true, but it's not the whole truth."

"Don't talk about my mother."

"Your move."

Marcus's Move 2: "You want something. Money, a favor, whatever. Name it. I'll pay. I'll do what you want. Just stop this."

White bishop forward. Capitulation disguised as negotiation. Smarter than Morrow — deescalating instead of escalating. Offering himself as a resource rather than an enemy.

LEVERAGE: compliance. Whatever you want.

Cain's Move 2: "You dispose of bodies for $500 each. Your mother's care costs $4,200 a month. That's a body every eight and a half days just to keep her in that room. But you've only done three in nine months. The math doesn't work."

He let the numbers hang in the air.

"You skim at the door. Overcharge covers, pocket the difference. About $200 a week. That covers the gap between your day pay and your mother's care. The bodies are extra. They're not for the bills, Marcus. They're for something else."

Pause.

"You enjoy them."

Marcus didn't respond. But the text beside his head updated in real time:

Self-image fracture: 73%. Load-bearing wall compromised.

He'd been telling himself the violence was separate. The door work, the shoving, the arm-grabbing, that was just the job. The bodies were necessity. He was a protector — of his mother, of the patrons, of the order. Every cruel act had a frame around it that made it look like duty.

But Cain had pulled out one brick — the enjoyment — and the whole frame was wobbling. Because if Marcus enjoyed the bodies, then they weren't duty. And if they weren't duty, then what was the shoving? And the arm-grabbing? And the settling look on his face afterward?

What was any of it, if not the thing he was afraid to name?

A black rook slid forward. Marcus's pieces scattered.

"You son of a bitch," Marcus whispered. Same words as Morrow. They all said the same words.

"Your move," Cain said.

Marcus's Move 3: He dropped his fists. His shoulders fell. The big frame, all 240 pounds of it, seemed to compress downward, as if gravity had suddenly remembered he existed and doubled its attention.

"I don't have a move," he said.

"Everyone has a move."

"Not me. Not anymore." He looked at Cain with an exhaustion that went past tired into a place where tired was a luxury. "Just take it. Whatever it is. Take it."

The board registered it as forfeit. The remaining white pieces dissolved, melting off the board.

Checkmate by forfeit.

The garage came back. Fluorescent lights. Concrete. The Charger with its dent.

Marcus was on his knees. Not because anyone put him there. His legs had simply voted without consulting the rest of him.

Cain looked down at him. And for a half-second — less than that, a flicker — he felt something stir in the nothing where his emotions used to be. Not sympathy. Not guilt. Something more like recognition. The way you recognize a word in a foreign language because it sounds like one in yours.

Then it was gone.

"Don't take it personally," Cain said, walking past him toward the exit.

He stopped. Turned his head slightly. Let the next word hang.

"Actually, do. It's very personal."

His footsteps echoed on the concrete. Behind him, Marcus's phone rang. Then rang again. Then a text. Then another.

The bodies had been found. An anonymous call to the police. Exact coordinates. Exact depth. Three sets of remains under the loading dock of a nightclub in the Flats.

Marcus knelt in the parking garage and answered none of the calls.

Cain walked into the night. The mechanism in his chest hummed. Two Pawns consumed. The grid sharpened another increment, the web of connections growing clearer, the depth of information pushing further.

He could feel the next one already. Out there in the city. Waiting to be found, and read, and played.

The board was still hungry.

So was he.
