Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Follow What Moves

Fred POV

I stepped through the door.

The moment I crossed it, everything changed.

It felt… different.

Not like the cave.

Not like the world before.

As I moved forward, I realized something strange.

It felt like I was inside the universe itself.

But I wasn't floating.

I was walking.

Stars stretched endlessly around me, scattered across a vast darkness, yet it didn't feel empty. It felt alive—like I was standing in something far greater than I could understand.

"…This is new."

I looked around slowly, trying to take it all in.

"When I entered the first door, it was just darkness…"

But this—

This was something else entirely.

It was beautiful.

And unsettling at the same time.

Ahead of me, I saw another door.

I approached it cautiously.

Everything felt quiet.

Too quiet.

When I finally reached it, I didn't hesitate.

I stepped forward—

And suddenly—

The world flipped.

"—What?!"

The door wasn't a passage.

It was an opening.

Facing downward.

Before I could react, I dropped.

Falling fast.

Straight into darkness.

"AH—!"

The wind rushed past me as I fell—

And then—

Splash.

I crashed into water.

Cold.

Deep.

The impact sent a shock through my entire body as I sank rapidly beneath the surface.

My eyes widened.

"…Underwater?!"

I kicked immediately, forcing myself upward.

The pressure surrounded me as I struggled, my lungs tightening.

I swam as fast as I could.

Until finally—

I broke through the surface.

"GASP—!"

I pulled in air sharply, breathing hard as I tried to stay afloat.

My heart was pounding.

I wiped water from my face and looked around.

"…Where am I now?"

At first, it seemed endless.

Just water.

Dark and deep.

But then—

I noticed something.

Walls.

Surrounding me.

Tall.

Massive.

Closing in from every side.

"…Wait…"

My breathing slowed slightly.

"They weren't here before."

I was sure of it.

The moment I fell—

There were no walls.

But now…

They were here.

Like they had formed after I arrived.

Or worse—

Like they were trapping me inside.

"…This is strange."

I looked around, trying to make sense of it.

"I don't even know how I got here…"

The moment I fell into this place, there were no walls.

Just endless ocean.

But now—

They were here.

Surrounding me.

Closing me in.

"…That doesn't make sense."

I stayed still for a moment, letting everything settle.

Then I realized something else.

I had been out.

Even if only for a short while.

My body felt heavy, like I had just regained consciousness.

I took a step forward.

Water shifted around my feet.

I paused.

"…It's shallow."

I looked down.

The water only reached my feet now.

Not deep.

Not like before.

Which made it even more confusing.

"…So it changed again."

This world…

It keeps changing.

I started walking slowly.

Each step felt heavier than it should.

The water resisted my movement, dragging against my legs, slowing me down.

"…This is going to be harder than I thought."

I moved carefully, eyes scanning my surroundings, unsure of what might happen next.

Because at this point—

Nothing in this world followed normal rules.

I kept walking.

After a while, I noticed something ahead.

Two paths.

I slowed down and looked between them.

"…A split?"

I frowned slightly.

Then it hit me.

"…This is a maze."

But not a normal one.

As I stood there, I could feel it clearly now.

Something was pulling me back.

Not physically grabbing me—but resisting me.

Every step forward felt heavier, like an invisible force was dragging me in the opposite direction.

"…This maze slows me down."

That realization made my chest tighten slightly.

Most mazes confuse you.

This one…

Wears you down.

I looked into both paths again.

Dark.

Silent.

Unpredictable.

"…Who knows what's even in here…"

What kind of creatures… or things… could be waiting inside?

I exhaled slowly.

Then made a decision.

"I'll go right."

…Why right?

"Why not?"

I let out a small breath.

"…Because it's right."

Even I knew that logic made no sense.

But standing there too long wouldn't help either.

So I moved.

To the right.

Each step felt heavier than before.

The water dragged against my feet.

The invisible force resisted me.

Slowing me down.

Again.

And again.

"…This is getting annoying."

I pushed forward anyway.

Minutes passed.

Slow.

Painfully slow.

The resistance didn't fade.

If anything—it felt stronger.

Eventually, my body started to give in.

Fatigue crept in.

"…Tch…"

I stopped.

Then slowly sat down, leaning against the wall beside me.

"…Just for a bit."

My breathing was steady, but my body felt drained.

This place…

It doesn't just test where you go.

It tests how long you can keep going.

I sat there for a moment, leaning against the wall, trying to recover my strength.

Then I reached into my bag and took out the book.

The same book.

I paused.

"…Wait."

I looked at it more closely.

It wasn't wet.

Not even a little.

"…How is that possible?"

I was just in the water.

Everything else should've been soaked.

But the book—

It was completely dry.

Like the water couldn't touch it.

"…That doesn't make sense."

For a second, I tried to figure it out.

But nothing in this world followed normal logic anyway.

So I shook my head.

"…Forget it."

I leaned back again, letting my body rest.

The force dragging me backward was still there, even while sitting. Subtle… but constant.

It wasn't just slowing me down.

It was resisting me.

"…This place is exhausting."

After a short break, I took a deep breath and sat up properly.

Then, without really thinking, I opened the book and grabbed the pen.

"…Might as well try something."

I started writing.

A simple word.

Cursive.

Something I had been practicing before.

But my hand wasn't steady.

The letters came out messy.

"…That's bad."

I frowned slightly, then tore the page out.

I let it go.

The paper slipped from my hand—

And immediately drifted.

To the left.

Fast.

Faster than I expected.

I stared at it.

"…Wait."

My eyes narrowed.

That wasn't random.

The paper kept moving in one direction.

Left.

Consistent.

Controlled.

"…So that's it."

I slowly stood up.

The realization hit me.

"This is why I'm being pushed back."

There's a current.

A force in the water.

It's not just resistance.

It's movement.

The water itself is flowing—

In the opposite direction I was walking.

"…Which means…"

My gaze sharpened slightly.

"There's something causing it."

Something pushing the water.

Or pulling it.

Like a system.

Like a flow.

"…Like a drain…"

Or—

"…a hole."

If there's a place where the water is being pulled down…

Then that's where everything is going.

And if I find it—

I might find the way forward.

"…And if there isn't one… then the water would stay calm."

I stood still, thinking.

But then another thought crept in.

"…What if I'm wrong?"

My grip tightened slightly.

"What if it's the opposite?"

Confusion started to settle in.

This wasn't just a guess anymore.

My life depended on this decision.

I already knew what would happen if I made the wrong move.

I almost died once.

I didn't want to repeat that.

I stood there for a few seconds.

Thinking.

Hesitating.

Then—

Trust your guts.

Jenna's words echoed in my mind.

I took a deep breath.

"…Alright."

I trusted it.

And stepped to the left.

I started walking.

And immediately—

"…It's easier."

My eyes widened slightly.

The resistance was gone.

Or at least… much weaker.

"…So I was right."

I wasn't fighting the force anymore.

I was moving with it.

I continued forward, following the flow of the water.

Left.

Then right.

Then left again.

Each turn felt natural, guided.

Until—

I stopped.

The force disappeared.

Completely.

"…What?"

I looked ahead.

Four paths.

A crossroad.

I frowned slightly.

"…So it's the same again."

I focused.

Feeling the water around my feet.

The force.

The pressure.

"…If it feels heavy, it's the wrong path."

"…If it feels easy, it's the right one."

I was about to move—

Then I stopped.

Something felt off.

"…Wait."

I looked down.

The water here felt different.

Still.

Balanced.

"…This place…"

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"…This is the center."

Even the paper I dropped earlier—

It had stopped here.

That confirmed it.

"…So this is where everything meets."

I took a slow breath.

"This world doesn't follow normal rules."

Not completely.

It has its own system.

Its own logic.

I reached into my bag again, tore another piece of paper, and dropped it into the water.

It moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

But only in certain directions.

"…So the currents aren't equal."

Different paths.

Different force levels.

I tested again.

Another piece.

Straight ahead—

The paper was pushed back.

"…So that's not it."

Then I tested the others.

Comparing the speed.

The direction.

The resistance.

Until finally—

"…Right side."

That path felt… normal.

Not too strong.

Not pushing me back.

Not pulling too hard.

Balanced.

"…That's the safest one."

I stepped forward.

Into the right path.

And as I moved—

The flow aligned with me again.

"…I was right."

I exhaled slowly, my body relaxing slightly.

This world…

It doesn't follow normal reality.

It follows its own rules.

Rules that shift.

Rules that test.

"…Like it's alive."

My gaze lowered slightly.

"…But that just raises more questions."

How did she create this?

How is any of this even possible?

I tightened my grip slightly as I continued walking.

"…Jenna…"

What kind of world did you leave behind?

Fred POV:

I kept walking.

Following the rule of this world.

Left to right.

Right to left.

Each turn guided by the flow.

And slowly…

It became easier.

The resistance that once dragged me back was no longer as strong. My steps felt lighter, more natural, as if I was finally moving in sync with the maze instead of fighting against it.

As I walked across the shallow water, my thoughts drifted.

"…Why did she leave this world for me?"

My gaze lowered slightly.

"It doesn't make sense…"

Before she died, she never told me anything about this place.

Not a single word.

"…So why now?"

Why leave something like this behind?

And why make me find it on my own?

The questions lingered in my mind as I continued forward.

Until—

I stopped.

"…This is the end?"

I had reached the end of the maze.

Or at least… what looked like the end.

But something felt off.

I stepped back slightly.

"…What is this?"

Exits.

Everywhere.

Paths surrounded me from all directions.

Too many.

There wasn't just one way out.

There were several.

And that made it worse.

"…Which one is real?"

I looked around, confusion settling in.

Every path looked possible.

Every path looked the same.

There was no clear answer.

"…This doesn't make sense."

Then—

I looked up.

And froze.

"…What…?"

Above me…

I saw them.

The sun.

And the moon.

Both present at the same time.

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Why are they both here?"

That wasn't normal.

Not even for this world.

"…Is this a sign?"

I looked back at the paths.

And then I noticed something.

On one side—

The paths were covered in darkness.

Pure darkness.

No light at all.

On the other side—

The paths were illuminated.

Covered in sunlight.

Bright.

Clear.

But somehow…

That only made things more confusing.

"…So which one is right?"

Light?

Or darkness?

"…This doesn't make sense at all."

The sun and the moon… together?

"No, it doesn't make sense!"

My voice echoed through every path around me.

I looked around again, trying to think logically.

Using the same method I used before… testing, observing, decoding.

But this time—

"…It would take too long."

There were too many variables.

Too many exits.

It wasn't efficient.

It wasn't logical.

And slowly… I started to feel it.

Drain.

Not physical at first.

Mental.

Like my thoughts were getting heavier the longer I stayed here.

"…This is new."

I frowned slightly.

"This wasn't happening in the cave…"

Back then, thinking was enough.

But here—

It was different.

It was draining me.

Badly.

My breathing slowed as frustration and exhaustion mixed together.

"…I can't do this anymore."

My voice came out quieter now.

I lowered my head slightly.

"…Jenna…"

"…Whatever you built… especially this maze…"

"It doesn't make sense…"

I sat down.

For the first time, I let myself drop into vulnerability.

The silence felt heavier than before.

For a moment… nothing happened.

Then—

I looked down.

At the ground.

And noticed it.

A faint glow.

"…Huh?"

I leaned closer.

Symbols.

Softly lit beneath the water's surface.

Not random.

Not natural.

"…There's something here."

My eyes narrowed slightly.

The maze wasn't just paths.

It was written.

I looked down at the glowing symbols beneath the water.

They shifted slowly, forming something clearer now.

○ ↧ ➝ -|-

"…What is this?"

The symbols circled faintly around me, as if reacting to my presence.

Then I looked up.

The reflection of the sun on the water changed.

It wasn't random anymore.

It aligned with the symbol.

And suddenly—

The maze revealed structure.

Three paths appeared clearly ahead of me.

Not just visually… but logically.

I narrowed my eyes.

"…So it's mapping something."

The circle symbol felt like the origin.

The arrow pointing down matched the sun's reflection.

And the horizontal line… matched the split in the paths ahead.

But what caught my attention most—

Was the difference between them.

Two of the paths felt smaller.

Weaker.

Faded.

But the one in the middle—

Was stronger.

Clearer.

Dominant.

I looked closer.

The sun's reflection didn't shine equally.

The two side paths barely caught its light.

But the middle path—

It reflected it fully.

"…That one."

I whispered.

The meaning clicked into place.

"…Follow the sun's reflection."

"To reach the forest."

I stood up immediately.

And moved forward.

Straight.

I didn't look back.

I trusted it.

My instincts.

The path guided by light.

At first, the water was still at my feet.

But as I continued walking—

It began to lower.

Slowly at first.

Then steadily.

"…It's working."

The deeper I went, the shallower the water became.

Until it was barely there at all.

Just wet ground beneath my steps.

But then—

I felt it again.

That presence.

"…It's back."

The feeling of being watched.

I stopped for half a second.

Then exhaled.

"…It's just a distraction."

I told myself.

Focus.

Keep walking.

And so I did.

Step after step.

Forward.

The feeling didn't disappear.

It stayed.

Following me.

Persistent.

Like it was waiting for me to break.

But I didn't.

I forced myself to ignore it.

"…This is part of the design."

I kept walking.

Straight ahead.

Long enough that the environment began to shift.

The water was gone completely now.

Only solid ground remained.

And then—

I reached the end of the path.

And saw it.

"…The forest."

I walked into the forest.

And immediately, something felt off.

I looked around.

"…Why do they all look the same?"

Every tree.

Identical.

Same height.

Same shape.

Same spacing.

It didn't feel natural.

"…Is this the next level?"

Or something else entirely?

Before I could think further—

Something moved.

Fast.

Right beside me.

My head snapped to the side.

"…What was that?!"

I didn't see it clearly.

But I felt it.

Without thinking, I ran.

Straight into the forest.

Branches blurred past me as I pushed forward, my footsteps hitting the ground hard and fast.

That feeling—

It was chasing me.

"…I can't outrun this thing."

I clenched my teeth and ran faster.

My breathing grew heavier.

This wasn't like before.

Back in the maze, staying calm made it disappear.

But here—

"…It doesn't care."

It wasn't affected.

It was still there.

Still following.

Still closing in.

I kept running.

Faster.

Pushing myself beyond what felt safe.

Until—

The presence weakened.

"…Did I… outrun it?"

I slowed down slightly, breathing hard.

I still couldn't see it.

But I could feel it.

Farther away now.

"…I got away."

I stopped for a moment, catching my breath.

But fear lingered in my chest.

"…That method doesn't work here."

Staying calm…

It doesn't matter in this place.

I swallowed hard.

"…I need to get out of here."

I started running again.

This time, more carefully.

My eyes scanned everything around me.

Left.

Right.

Every movement.

Every shadow.

Then I stopped suddenly and hid behind a tree.

I stayed still.

Listening.

Watching.

"…This forest…"

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"…It's infinite."

Everything looked the same.

No landmarks.

No differences.

No end.

"…There has to be a way out."

There always is.

But finding it—

That's the problem.

I stayed cautious.

Because that thing…

Was still out there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then—

I noticed something.

On the tree ahead.

A mark.

Red.

"…An X?"

It looked like it had been carved… or stained.

And beside it—

A knife.

Hanging.

Pointing in a direction.

I stepped closer, observing it carefully.

"…This isn't random."

A thought formed in my mind.

"…There has to be more."

I looked around again.

Then moved.

Fast.

To the left.

And there—

Another mark.

Another X.

Another knife.

Pointing.

Same pattern.

"…So it's not just one."

I stepped back slightly, thinking.

"If I connect them…"

The direction became clearer.

Like an arrow.

Pointing straight ahead.

"…This is a guide."

But I wasn't fully convinced yet.

"…I need one more."

To be sure.

I looked up.

The sky was changing.

The light was fading.

"…The sun is setting."

My chest tightened slightly.

"If it gets dark…"

This place—

Would become worse.

Much worse.

I clenched my fist slightly.

"…I have to find it. Now."

Fred POV

I ran straight back, following the direction I had mapped out.

My senses sharpened.

"…It's getting closer."

That presence again.

Without hesitation, I hid behind a tree, holding my breath, making no sound.

Seconds passed.

Then—

It rushed past me.

Fast.

Like a blur I couldn't see… only feel.

"…Now."

I moved.

I ran again.

Straight ahead.

Only a few meters in—

I saw it.

The third mark.

Another X.

Another knife.

Pointing.

I stepped back slightly, connecting everything in my head.

"…If I map this…"

Like points on a graph.

The marks—

They form an arrow.

Clear.

Direct.

"…This is the way."

I turned and ran.

Straight toward where the arrow pointed.

No hesitation.

No second guessing.

Just forward.

Then—

The ground vanished beneath me.

"—AHH!"

I fell.

My voice echoed loudly as I dropped into darkness.

And then—

Splash.

I hit water hard.

"Ow—!"

The impact felt like hitting solid rock.

The force dragged me down beneath the surface.

Cold water surrounded me as I sank.

I kicked immediately and swam upward.

After a few seconds—

I broke through.

"GASP—!"

I inhaled sharply, breathing hard.

I looked up.

A small hole above me.

"…That's where I fell."

Then I noticed something else.

The light.

"…The sun?"

That didn't make sense.

Back in the forest—

The sun was setting.

But here—

It had risen again.

I frowned.

"…This world really doesn't follow time."

The sunlight wasn't random.

It was pointing.

Downward.

"…It's guiding something."

I looked beneath the water.

Shallow near me.

But beyond—

It dropped deeper.

Much deeper.

The cave around me was small.

Confined.

But the lake…

"…It goes down."

I took a breath and dove.

Swimming toward the light.

The deeper I went, the darker it became—

But the light stayed visible.

Guiding me.

"…I'm close."

Or so I thought.

But then—

My lungs tightened.

"…Too deep—!"

I turned and swam back up quickly.

Breaking the surface again, gasping for air.

"…I can't reach it like this."

I wiped my face, thinking fast.

"…I need something."

I climbed out slightly and searched the cave.

Looking for anything useful.

Then I found them.

A mirror.

A chest.

And another journal.

But I ignored the journal for now.

I needed something practical.

Something to help me breathe.

Then—

"…A snorkel?"

I picked it up.

It was made of wood.

Weird.

Unnatural.

"…Why is this even here?"

Nothing in this world made sense anyway.

So I didn't question it further.

I put it on.

Then dove again.

Swimming deeper this time.

Following the light.

The water grew darker.

Heavier.

But the light remained.

After a few moments—

I found it.

A rock.

Or a block.

Something built.

Sealed.

Locked.

"…There's something inside."

I searched around it.

Nothing.

No key.

No mechanism.

"…Then how do I open it?"

I had no answer.

So I swam back up again.

Breaking the surface—

"GASP—!"

And then—

A whisper.

Soft.

Echoing through the cave.

"…Reflection."

I froze.

"…Reflection…"

It said it again.

I stayed silent.

Thinking.

"…Reflection…"

Then it clicked.

"…The mirror."

I turned and looked at it.

Then at the sunlight.

"…If I use the light…"

I grabbed the mirror and positioned it.

The sunlight reflected off its surface—

Redirected.

"…That's it."

I looked around.

"…There has to be another surface."

Something reflective.

Then I saw it.

Above.

Amethyst.

Shiny.

Perfect for reflection.

"…There."

But there was a problem.

"…How do I hold this in place?"

The light wouldn't stay aligned.

Then I looked behind me.

The chest.

"…That floats."

I grabbed it and pushed it into the water.

It stayed afloat.

"…Perfect."

I placed the mirror on top of it carefully.

Then guided the chest across the water's surface.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Until—

The reflected light hit the amethyst.

And then—

It bounced.

From one crystal—

To another.

Then another.

Until finally—

It pointed directly at the rock below.

"…It's opening something."

I didn't hesitate.

I dove again.

Swimming toward the rock.

This time—

I saw it clearly.

A keyhole.

Circular.

"…Wait…"

I reached for the wooden snorkel.

"…This wasn't just for breathing."

I removed it quickly and fitted it into the lock.

It clicked.

The ground rumbled.

The sealed rock opened.

Revealing—

A door.

I surfaced again, breathing heavily.

"…So that thing below…"

"…was just a distraction."

It wasn't the solution.

Just something to pull me away.

I climbed out of the water slowly, staring at the door.

"…I didn't outsmart this world."

Not completely.

It guided me.

Tested me.

Tricked me.

"…This world really is something else."

I tightened my grip slightly.

"…And it's getting harder."

Each place.

Each puzzle.

More complex than the last.

"…Even my logic isn't enough anymore."

I stepped toward the door.

Paused for a second.

Then exhaled softly.

"…I hope I'm getting closer."

To the truth.

I walked through.

"Onto the next world or whatever."
