Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

The SUV careened through the city streets, its tires screeching against the pavement. Zephyr drove with reckless abandon, weaving through traffic and taking sharp turns that pressed Delaney against the door.

Behind them, a chorus of unearthly howls echoed through the night their pursuers were gaining ground. Delaney could see the creatures now, their monstrous forms leaping from rooftop to rooftop with supernatural agility.

Zephyr glanced in the rearview mirror, his face grim. "We need to lose them before we reach the countryside. Those things can't survive in daylight for long."

He suddenly veered off the main road, plunging into a maze of narrow alleys and side streets. The SUV bounced violently over uneven pavement, its suspension groaning in protest.

"What are those things?" Delaney gasped, gripping the door handle tightly.

Zephyr's jaw clenched as he navigated the treacherous alleyways, his eyes never leaving the rearview mirror. "They're called Shadow Hounds. They're summoned by dark sorcerers to track and hunt their prey. And they've been sent to capture you."

He took a sharp turn, narrowly avoiding a pile of trash cans. The SUV's engine roared as he pushed it to its limits. "Your father's enemies must have found out about your awakening abilities. They'll stop at nothing to get their hands on you."

The howls grew louder, more frenzied the Shadow Hounds were closing in. Delaney could see their glowing red eyes piercing the darkness, their twisted forms growing larger in the rear window.

Zephyr glanced at her, his expression deadly serious. "When I tell you to, I need you to focus on that buzzing sensation inside you. Try to channel it into the back of the SUV. It might be our only chance."

Delaney nodded nervously, trying to focus on the strange energy pulsing beneath her skin. It felt like electricity crackling through her veins, both exhilarating and terrifying.

Zephyr slammed on the brakes suddenly, causing the SUV to skid sideways. He threw open his door and jumped out, drawing a sleek black pistol from beneath his jacket. "Now!" he shouted over the howls of the approaching creatures. "Do it now!"

The Shadow Hounds were almost upon them, their claws scraping against the asphalt as they closed in for the kill. Zephyr fired several shots at their eyes their only vulnerable spot but there were too many.

Delaney closed her eyes and concentrated on the buzzing energy within her. She felt it surge forward at her command, coalescing into a bright ball of light behind the SUV.

The ball of light exploded outward with a deafening crack, sending a shockwave of pure energy rippling through the alley. The Shadow Hounds were thrown back, their twisted forms convulsing as the magical blast tore through them.

Zephyr dove back into the SUV, slamming the door shut behind him. He threw it into gear and floored the accelerator, racing away from the carnage. "Well done," he panted, casting a relieved glance at Delaney. "You've got a natural talent for this."

The alleyways blurred past as they sped towards the countryside, leaving the howls and destruction behind. Delaney slumped back in her seat, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.

Delaney's hands trembled as she stared at her own palms, still tingling from the energy she had just unleashed. "I... I did that? I created that light?"

Zephyr nodded approvingly, navigating a sharp turn with practiced ease. "You did. And you did it instinctively that's more than most new initiates accomplish in their first week of training."

He glanced at her, his expression softening slightly. "Your father would be proud. He always said you had his strength running through your veins."

The SUV emerged from the city limits, speeding along a winding road surrounded by dense forest. The moon cast eerie shadows through the trees, but for once, Delaney didn't feel quite so afraid.

Zephyr reached over and gently squeezed her shoulder. "We'll be at the estate soon. Once we're behind its wards, you can rest and recover from what just happened."

Zephyr's touch was surprisingly comforting, grounding Delaney in the midst of her whirling thoughts and emotions. She leaned into it slightly, grateful for the small gesture of support.

The SUV's headlights illuminated a set of ornate iron gates up ahead, flanked by stone pillars topped with glowing orbs. As they approached, the gates swung open silently, revealing a long driveway leading to a magnificent mansion.

Zephyr slowed the SUV as they pulled up to the mansion's entrance, its facade bathed in soft light from more of those strange glowing orbs. He turned to Delaney, his expression serious but reassuring.

"This is your new home for the time being, Miss Delaney. The estate is warded against most supernatural threats, and its walls hold secrets that have protected your family for generations."

Zephyr stepped out of the SUV and walked around to open Delaney's door, offering his hand to help her out. "Come, let's get you inside and settled. You've had a long and trying night."

As Delaney took his hand and stepped out of the vehicle, she couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the grandeur of the mansion before her. Its architecture was unlike anything she had ever seen, blending ancient and modern elements in a seamless fusion.

Zephyr led her up the steps to the entrance, where two massive wooden doors stood open, revealing a grand foyer lit by yet more glowing orbs.

The foyer was even more impressive up close, with high ceilings supported by carved stone pillars and a sweeping staircase leading to upper floors. The air inside felt different thicker, charged with an energy that hummed beneath Delaney's skin.

Zephyr guided her towards the staircase, his hand still resting lightly on her lower back. "The guest wing is this way. I'll show you to your room and have someone bring up some food and a change of clothes."

As they ascended the stairs, Delaney noticed intricate carvings along the walls symbols that seemed to pulse faintly in the orblight. She reached out to touch one, but Zephyr's hand gently caught hers.

"Those are protection wards,"

"Those are protection wards," Zephyr explained softly, his fingers brushing against hers as he guided her hand away from the wall. "They absorb and neutralize negative energy. You'll find them throughout the estate they're what keep us safe from the shadows outside."

He led her down a long hallway lined with portraits of sternfaced ancestors, their eyes seeming to follow Delaney's every move. The mansion felt alive around them, its ancient stones humming with power.

Zephyr stopped before a door adorned with a silver crest a stylized 'D' surrounded by intricate symbols. "This will be your room for now. I hope it meets your standards."
