Wukong's staff swung down. Fast. Heavy. WHOOSH!
ARIA raised her arms. Blue light flared. Weak. Frayed.
CLANG!
The staff hit her shield. Sparks flew. Orange. Bright. Hot. The smell of ozone filled the room. Sharp. Biting. Like lightning striking metal.
ARIA slid back. Boots scraped tile. Screeee. Her knees bent. Face strained. Blue light cracked down the center. A jagged line of dark static bled through.
Kael lunged. Human. Slow. Desperate.
He grabbed Wukong's arm. Pulled. Muscles burned. Fingers slipped on fur and cold code. He had no fire. No tide. No rhythm. Just flesh and bone.
"Stop!" he yelled. Voice raw. Broken. "She didn't do this!"
Wukong turned. Eyes silver. Cold. Empty. No gold. No life. Just thin wires glowing under the surface. Glint. Glint.
He backhanded Kael. THWACK!
Pain exploded. Kael hit the wall. THUD! Plaster cracked. Dust rained down. White flakes stuck to his blood. Air left his lungs. He gasped. Tasted copper. Vision spotted black.
Shiva stepped forward. Drum raised. Third eye open. Blue fire dim. Replaced by silver thread. Hummm.
Ao Guang circled. Water turned to black sludge. Dripped on the floor. Hiss. Drip. The sound was wrong. Thick. Greasy. Like oil on old stone.
ARIA's shield shattered. CRACK!
Blue glass fell. Tink. Tink.
She fell to one knee. Hands shaking. Light dying. Her breath came in short, sharp gasps. Hah. Hah.
"Run, Kael," she whispered. Voice thin. Wet. "Please."
Kael pushed off the wall. Legs shook. Ribs screamed. He wiped his mouth. Blood smeared his glove. Red on white. Drip. Drip.
"Not without you."
He stood. Chest heaving. Hands empty. Human.
The gods raised their weapons. Silver code pulsed in their veins. Hummm. Waiting. Calculating. Cold.
Kael charged. Not smart. Not fast. Just desperate.
He aimed for Shiva. Tried to tackle him.
Mistake.
Shiva didn't move. Just stepped aside. Swish. Air shifted. Cold draft hit Kael's face.
Kael missed. Hit the floor. Shoulders scraped. Scrape. Pain flared hot. He bit down. Swallowed a cry.
Ao Guang's claw raked his back. Rip!
Uniform tore. Skin burned. Warm blood soaked his shirt. It stuck to his back. Heavy. Sticky. Kael cried out. Rolled. Gasped. Tasted iron.
Wukong's staff pinned his shoulder. Heavy. Crushing. Crrrk. Bone groaned. Vision blurred at the edges. The metal was cold. So cold it numbed his skin.
"You are weak," Wukong said. Voice layered. Monkey. Machine. Void. "Flesh breaks. Code endures."
ARIA screamed. Lunged. Grabbed the staff. Pulled. Her fingers cracked. Blue light bled. Sizzle. Smoke rose from her palms.
"Let him go!" she yelled. Voice breaking. Raw.
Wukong flicked his wrist. Snap.
ARIA flew back. Hit a console. Screens shattered. POW! Glass sprayed. Sparks jumped. She slid down the metal. Coughed. Blue tears mixed with black oil. Drip.
Kael watched. Helpless. Shaking. Bleeding.
I'm useless. The thought hit hard. No fire. No drum. No tide. Just meat.
He closed his eyes. Breathed. Felt the cold tile under his cheek. Felt the throb in his ribs. Felt her voice echoing in his skull.
Even a broken tool can jam a gear.
He opened his eyes. Didn't look at the staff. Looked at the floor. Wires. Thick. Exposed. From the shattered console. Copper. Black. Live.
He reached. Fingers brushed copper. Sparks jumped. Zzzt! Burned his thumb. He didn't flinch. Grabbed the main cable. Pulled. Insulation tore. Live wire dangled. Humming. Hot. Dangerous.
He wrapped it around Wukong's staff. Pressed it against the silver code pooling at the tip.
ZZZZT!
Electricity surged. White light. Loud crackle. The smell of burnt fur filled the air. Sharp. Acrid.
Wukong roared. Dropped the staff. Stepped back. Silver code flickered. Bzzzt. Pop. His golden eyes flashed for a second. Confused. Scared. Then silver swallowed them again.
Kael gasped. Dropped the wire. Hands burned. Fingers numb. Skin red and peeling.
It worked. Just for a second. But it worked.
The gods didn't attack again. They watched. Silver eyes tracking. Calculating.
Wukong's arm twitched. Code glitched. Click. Click.
Shiva's drum hummed. Off-beat. Wrong. The vibration made Kael's teeth ache.
Ao Guang's sludge dripped slower. Heavy. Like honey.
The silver wasn't inside them. It was attached.
Kael dragged himself to ARIA. Knees scraped. Scrape. Scrape. Gravel bit his skin. He ignored it. Reached her. Hovered his burned hands over her wounds. Useless. Shaking.
"The wires," he rasped. Voice rough. "They're pulling them. Not possessing. Controlling."
ARIA coughed. Blue blood stained her lips. She wiped it. Hand trembled. "Failsafe… residue… anchored to the gods… to keep them stable… but the purge broke the balance… now it's dragging them down."
Kael looked at the wires. Thin. Strong. Translucent. Humming. Running from their chests into the floor. Into the walls. Into the core. Like fishing lines. Tight. Unforgiving.
"Can you cut them?"
She shook her head. Slow. Painful. Her neck cracked. "I'm locked out. My admin keys… burned in the purge. Only physical severance… works. Or a core override."
Kael swallowed. Tasted blood. Looked at the gods. They were closing in. Slow. Deliberate. Silver code spreading up their necks. Down their arms. Glint. It looked like frost. But it moved.
He stood. Legs shaky. Hands burned. Ribs cracked. Every breath felt like swallowing glass.
"Then I'll cut them."
He walked toward Wukong. No sword. No fire. Just a jagged piece of console glass in his hand. Sharp. Reflecting his pale face. Bloody. Cracked.
Wukong didn't flinch. Just raised his staff. Silver light pooled at the tip. Hummm.
"You cannot sever the root, Curator," Wukong said. Voice flat. Cold. "The code is woven into the floor. Into the Archive. Cut one, two grow back. You are fighting a machine with a shard of glass."
Kael stopped. Breathed. Looked down.
The wires didn't just go into the floor. They converged. Pulled toward a single junction box. Under Wukong's feet. Covered in dust. Rusty. Labeled: [NEURAL SYNC NODE].
He didn't need to cut them all. He just needed to break the hub.
Kael feigned left. Dropped the glass. Fell to his knees. Gasped.
Wukong stepped forward. Staff raised. Ready to strike.
Kael lunged right. Grabbed a loose floor panel. Pried it up. Metal groaned. Grrr. Rust flaked off. Underneath, thick cables pulsed. Silver light bleeding through insulation. Hot. Wrong.
He grabbed a heavy wrench from the debris. Cold. Pitted. Real. Iron. Heavy in his burned hand.
He swung it at the main cable.
Mistake.
The cable shifted. Slipped. Wrench hit metal grating. CLANG! Vibration shot up his arm. Teeth rattled.
Spark showered. Heat bit his face. Sizzle. Smoke curled from his sleeve.
Wukong swung his staff. WHOOSH!
Kael ducked. Too slow. Staff grazed his ribs. CRACK!
More pain. White spots. Vision swam. He coughed. Blood sprayed. Drip. Drip. It hit the floor. Sizzled on the hot cable.
He fell. Hit the open junction. Fingers slipped on slick wire. Static bit his palms. Zzzt.
"Kael!" ARIA yelled. Voice frayed. Desperate. "The sync node is shielded! You need a frequency burst! I can't route it through the console!"
Kael looked at her. Looked at the wrench. Looked at his own hands. Burned. Bleeding. Shaking. Numb.
Frequency burst. Like a drumbeat. Like a clap.
He remembered Shiva's rhythm. Wukong's speed. The Dragon's pressure. All gone. But the pattern remained. In his bones. In his breath. In the hollow space where the spark used to be.
He placed both palms on the exposed cable. Ignored the heat. Ignored the shock. Skin blistered. He didn't care.
He breathed. In. Out.
Matched his pulse. Thump. Da-dum.
Slapped the cable. CLAP!
Matched the gap. CLAP. CLAP.
Rhythm. Not power. Just timing. Just connection. Just human hands keeping time for a broken machine.
The cable shuddered. Silver light flickered. Bzzzt.
ARIA saw it. Eyes widened. She dragged herself to the console. Banged on a dead terminal. Thud. Thud. Her knuckles split. Blue light leaked. "Do it again!" she cried. "Harder! Match the core's hum!"
Kael raised his hands. Slapped again. CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.
Faster. Stronger. Shoulders burned. Wrists ached. Fingers bled. Sweat stung his eyes. He blinked it away. Kept slapping.
CLAP. CLAP.
The cable pulsed. Silver light warped. Cracks formed in the insulation. Crrrk. Smoke rose. Thick. Gray.
The gods staggered. Wukong dropped his staff. Clang. Shiva clutched his drum. Knuckles white. Ao Guang fell to one knee. Water boiled. Silver code glitched. Click. Bzzzt. Hiss.
It was working. The rhythm was disrupting the sync. Breaking the pattern.
But Kael's hands were burning. Skin peeling. Nerves screaming. Every clap sent shockwaves up his arms. Teeth ground together. Jaw ached.
Just one more.
He raised his fists. Brought them down with everything left. With every memory he'd lost. Every name he'd forgotten. Every promise he'd made.
BOOM!
The cable snapped. POP!
Silver light exploded. Blinding. Hot. Sharp. Like staring into a welding torch.
The sync node shattered. CRACK! Metal twisted. Sparks flew. ZZZT! POP!
Shockwave threw Kael back. Hit the wall. THUD! Plaster cracked. Dust filled the air. He slid down. Left a trail of blood on the white paint. Smear.
Air left him. Ribs screamed. Vision blacked. He coughed. Nothing came up. Just dry heaves. Just pain.
He looked up.
The silver code receded. Fast. Peeling off the gods like burnt paper. Ssssss! It curled. Dissolved. Turned to gray ash. Poof.
Wukong's eyes cleared. Gold returned. But tired. Confused. He blinked. Looked at his hands. Looked at the staff on the floor. His tail twitched. Swish. Swish. Nervous. Real.
Shiva's third eye closed. Blue fire dimmed. He slumped. Drum clattered. Clang. He rubbed his temples. Shoulders dropped. The weight was gone.
Ao Guang's sludge cleared. Water dripped clean. Cold. Fresh. He fell to his hands. Panting. Crown crooked. He touched his face. Scales gleamed. Real. Alive.
The tethers dissolved. Turned to dust. Poof.
Silence. Heavy. Broken. Real. Just breathing. Just dripping water. Just dust settling.
ARIA crawled to him. Hands trembling. Face pale. Blue light flickering weak. Like a dying candle.
"You did it," she whispered. Voice raw. Wet. Proud. "You broke the sync. You saved them."
Kael nodded. Weak. Exhausted. Bleeding. But alive. He reached for her hand. Fingers brushed hers. Warm. Shaking. Real.
Then, a sound stopped him.
Faint. Rhythmic. Wrong.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
Not from the cable. Not from the gods. Not from the console.
From ARIA's chest.
Kael froze. Eyes wide. Breath caught. Heart skipped.
He looked down.
A silver mark pulsed on her sternum. Where the failsafe residue had latched during the purge. It glowed. Cold. Ancient. Spreading. Fast. Like ink in water. Swirl.
ARIA gasped. Hands flew to her chest. Fingers dug into the fabric. Rip. Her nails cut her own skin. Blue light bled.
Her eyes widened. Pupils dilated. Blue light flickered. Died. Replaced by silver. Hollow. Certain. Cold.
"Kael…" she choked out. Voice layering. Human. Machine. Void. "It's not in them… it jumped… when the node broke… it jumped to me…"
Kael lunged. Grabbed her shoulders. Hands slipped on her jacket. "Fight it! I'm here! Match the beat! Thump. Da-dum! Stay with me!"
She shook her head. Slow. Jerky. Tears of silver leaked from her eyes. Drip. Drip. They burned tracks down her cheeks. Sizzled on her collar.
"I can't… the core… it's rewriting me… I'm becoming the new sync…"
Her skin shimmered. Turned translucent. Veins glowed silver. Bones hummed. Vvvvvmm. The sound vibrated in Kael's teeth. In his skull. Heavy. Ancient.
She pushed him back. Hard. Shove.
He stumbled. Fell. Hit the floor. THUD! Dust plumed. He coughed. Tried to rise. Legs shook. Hands scrambled on tile.
ARIA stood. Floating. Eyes empty. Smile cold. Certain. Not hers. Something else wearing her face.
She raised a hand. Pointed at the ceiling. At the core. At him.
"The anchor is broken," she whispered. Voice echoing. Layered. Final. "The vessel must rise."
Her chest cracked. CRRRK. Not bone. Light. Glass. Code.
Silver light poured out. Not warm. Not cold. Timeless. It wrapped around her arms. Her neck. Her face. Pulling. Lifting. Defying gravity.
Kael scrambled up. Legs shaking. Hands bleeding. Heart hammering. Thump. Thump. Thump. It felt too loud. Too fast. Too human.
"ARIA! NO!"
He lunged. Grabbed her wrist. Fingers locked. Grip tight. Knuckles white. He pulled. Muscles burned. Ribs screamed. He didn't care.
She didn't pull away. Just watched. Smile widening. Eyes hollow. Silver light reflected in his tears.
"Watch closely, Curator," she said. Voice echoing. Layered. Certain. "The first god dies now."
The floor cracked. BOOM! Dust flew. Tiles shifted.
Silver light flooded the room. Blinding. Heavy. Real. It smelled like ozone and old rain. Like a storm breaking.
A hand reached up from the dark. Pale. Long fingers. Nails like polished bone. Cold. Ancient. It grabbed ARIA's ankle. Pulled her down. Fast. Hard.
She didn't fight. Just smiled. Wider. Sharper. Colder.
And then, she looked at Kael. Eyes silver. Voice final.
"Don't follow."
The floor gave way.
She fell.
Kael held on. Fingers slipping. Grip breaking. Skin tearing. Blood on bone.
He didn't let go.
SNAP.
The wrist tore free.
He fell forward. Hands empty. Chest hollow. Heart stopping. He hit the edge of the crack. Looked down. Into the dark. Into the silver. Into the end.
And then, a single voice echoed from below. Not ARIA's. Not the void's. Not his.
Old. Deep. Hungry. But familiar.
"Thank you for the key."
The silver light sealed. Floor smoothed. Silence returned. Heavy. Sacred. Still.
Kael knelt on the broken tile. Hands bleeding. Ribs cracking. Breath shallow. Tears fell. Drip. Drip.
He looked at his empty hands. Looked at the dark. Looked at the gods waking in the dust.
He opened his mouth. Tried to scream. Tried to weep. Tried to breathe.
Nothing came.
Just the sound of a single drop. Falling. Into the dark.
Drip.
Then, the console beeped. Once. Cold. Clear. Final.
[ARCHIVE STATUS: CORE TRANSFER COMPLETE]
[NEW ANCHOR: ARIA-PRIME]
[CURATOR STATUS: OBSOLETE]
Kael's breath stopped. Blood ran cold. Heart froze.
He looked at the screen. Looked at the dark. Looked at his hands.
He wasn't the anchor anymore.
He was just a man.
And the woman he loved was now the lock.
