Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Monkey's Cage

The medical bay was too bright.

Kael lay on the white table. His arms were strapped down. Cold metal touched his wrists. His temples. His ankles.

A silver drone hovered over his face. It buzzed. Bzzzz. Blue light scanned his eyes.

"Stay still," ARIA said. Her voice came from the walls. It sounded worried. "Your neural activity is spiking. If you move, the shock will knock you out."

Kael didn't move. He stared at the ceiling. His heart hammered against his ribs. Thump. Thump. Thump.

"Tell me again," Kael whispered.

ARIA sighed. A hologram appeared. She looked tired. Her blue light was dim. "I ran the diagnostic three times. The results are the same. Kael... your brain doesn't match human DNA."

Kael closed his eyes. "What does that mean?"

"It means you don't age like a human. Your cells repair too fast. And when you use the Archive's power, your brain waves sync with the core." She paused. "You aren't just the Curator, Kael. You're part of the system."

Kael felt cold. "Am I a robot?"

"No. You have blood. You have feelings. But your origin..." She trailed off. "It's encrypted. Locked by a code I can't break."

Kael tried to sit up. The straps held him tight. "Let me out."

"Kael, you need rest. The attack on your mind—"

"The attack is still happening!" Kael yelled. He jerked against the straps. The metal clanked. Clank. Clank.

The main screen on the wall flickered.

White text appeared. Fast. Angry.

[THE MONKEY. HE IS NEXT.]

[THE VOID IS EATING HIS MOUNTAIN.]

[HURRY, KEEPER.]

ARIA's hologram flickered. "Another message? From where?"

"From inside me," Kael said. His voice was flat. Numb. "Just like the last one. The corruption is using me to talk."

He looked at his hand. The skin looked normal. Pale. Human. But he remembered the reflection. The gold in his eyes.

"ARIA," Kael said. "Unlock the straps."

"Kael, it's too dangerous. Sun Wukong's memory is volatile. If you go in now, with your mind unstable, you might get lost."

"If I don't go, the Void takes him. The Monkey King is the strongest fighter we have. If he falls, the Archive loses its best shield." Kael gritted his teeth. "Unlock. Now."

ARIA hesitated. The drone buzzed.

Then, the straps hissed. Ssssss. They popped open.

Kael swung his legs off the table. His feet hit the cold floor. He grabbed his coat. It smelled like smoke and antiseptic.

"Kael," ARIA warned. "Be careful. The Monkey... he knows things. He might see what's inside you."

"Let him see," Kael said. He walked to the door. "I'm tired of secrets."

The Corridor of Beasts was different from the rest of the Archive.

The white walls were gone. Here, the metal floor was covered in moss. Thick green vines crawled up the pillars. The air smelled like rain and wet earth.

Kael walked past cages of light.

He saw a massive tiger made of lightning, pacing back and forth. Roar. No sound, just vibration. He saw a giant turtle with a mountain on its back, sleeping in a pool of digital water.

At the end of the hall stood a giant stone gate.

It was carved with ancient Chinese characters. Dragons coiled around the archway. Two stone lions guarded the entrance. Their eyes glowed red.

Grrrrr.

The sound wasn't real. It was a memory loop.

Kael placed his hand on the cold stone.

"Sun Wukong," he whispered. "Let me in."

The gate rumbled. GRRRUMBLE.

Dust fell from the carvings. The stone lions opened their mouths. A beam of golden light shot out. It hit Kael in the chest.

WHAM.

He gasped. The world dissolved.

He landed in dirt.

Soft. Brown. Real dirt.

Kael coughed. Pushed himself up.

He was in a forest. But not a normal forest. The trees were huge. Their trunks were thick as towers. The leaves were red and gold. They chimed like bells in the wind.

Ting. Ting. Ting.

The sky was purple. A giant red moon hung low.

And in the center of the clearing stood a mountain.

It wasn't just rock. It was a palace carved into the stone. Waterfalls poured from its peaks. But the water wasn't wet. It was static. Glitchy white noise that crashed and faded.

Ssssss. Pop.

"You're late."

Kael spun around.

Sitting on a low branch was a figure.

He wore loose red pants and a yellow sash. His chest was bare, covered in golden fur. His tail twitched. Swish. Swish.

His face was a monkey. But his eyes were human. Sharp. Golden. Bored.

He was peeling a peach. He took a bite. Juice ran down his chin.

"Wukong," Kael said.

The Monkey King swallowed. He hopped down. Landed silently.

"Kael," the Monkey said. His voice was raspy. Playful. "You look like trash. Rough night?"

"The Archive is under attack," Kael said. He stepped forward. "The Void is eating Section Seven. The Phoenix was corrupted. You're next."

Wukong laughed. He threw the peach pit away. It hit the ground and turned into a butterfly.

"Next?" Wukong scratched his ear. "The void has been chewing on my mountain for centuries. I'm bored, Curator. Not scared. Bored."

He stepped closer. He smelled like peaches and ozone.

"But you..." Wukong's golden eyes narrowed. He leaned in. Sniffed.

Kael held his breath. "What?"

"You smell like the Core," Wukong whispered. He tapped Kael's chest. Tap. Tap. "You smell like the lock. The key. The thing that put us here."

Kael's heart skipped a beat. "I didn't put you here. I just found the Archive."

"Liar." Wukong's smile didn't reach his eyes. "You have the scent of the First Curator. Old magic. Same as the stone."

Before Kael could answer, the sky screamed.

SCREEEEEEE!

The red moon shattered.

Purple lightning struck the ground. BOOM!

The trees shook. Leaves fell like rain.

Wukong sighed. "Here we go again."

The ground erupted.

From the dirt, shapes pulled themselves out.

They were tall. Humanoid. But made of black static. Their faces were smooth. No eyes. No mouths. Just blank surfaces.

Glitch Monsters.

Hiss. Click.

Three of them stood up. They held swords made of jagged data.

"Void spawn," Kael said. He reached for his belt. The energy sword hummed to life. Vrrrrt.

"No," Wukong said. He pushed Kael back. "Stay back, Curator. This is my playground."

Wukong reached behind his ear. He pulled out something tiny. A needle.

He blew on it. Whoosh.

The needle grew. It stretched. Expanded.

It became a staff. Long. Black. Gold tips. Heavy.

CLANG.

Wukong slammed the staff on the ground. The earth cracked.

"Monkey Magic!" he yelled.

He leaped into the air.

The fight was a blur.

Wukong moved like water. Like wind. He spun. The staff became a blur of black and gold.

WHACK! WHACK! WHACK!

He hit the first monster. The creature shattered into pixels. Zzzt.

He kicked the second one. It flew back and hit a tree. The tree dissolved into code.

The third monster lunged at Wukong's back.

"Wukong!" Kael yelled.

Wukong didn't turn. He knew.

But Kael moved first.

His body reacted before his brain thought.

Kael stepped forward. Raised his hand.

Snap.

A wave of golden force exploded from his palm. It hit the monster in the chest.

BOOM!

The creature flew backward. Crashed into the rocks. Static hissed as it died.

Silence.

The clearing was empty. Just dust and code.

Kael stared at his hand. It smoked. His fingers trembled.

He hadn't meant to do that. He didn't know he could do that.

Wukong landed. He spun the staff once. Shrunk it back to a needle. Put it behind his ear.

He turned to Kael.

The Monkey wasn't smiling anymore.

His eyes were wide. His ears twitched.

"What was that?" Wukong asked. His voice was low. Dangerous.

Kael lowered his hand. "I don't know. I just... reacted."

"That wasn't Archive tech," Wukong said. He walked closer. Slow. "That was Divine Qi. Old power. The kind only a god has."

He circled Kael. Like a predator.

"You used the force without a weapon. You shaped the air." Wukong stopped in front of him. "Curator... who are you?"

"I'm human," Kael said. But his voice shook. "I'm just the Keeper."

"Lies!" Wukong bared his teeth. Fangs gleamed. "I fought gods for eons! I know their aura! You just used power that rivals the Jade Emperor!"

The ground shook again.

GRRRUMBLE.

The static waterfalls roared.

More monsters were coming. Hundreds. A wave of black static crested the hill.

Wukong looked at the wave. Then back at Kael.

He grabbed Kael's wrist. His grip was like iron.

"We don't have time for secrets," Wukong hissed. "But listen to me, Keeper. If you are lying, I will rip your mind apart. If you are telling the truth..."

He pulled Kael close.

"Then you are in more danger than any of us. The Void didn't attack my mountain by accident. It's hunting you."

Kael's breath caught. "Me?"

Wukong pointed a claw at Kael's chest. At the spot where the Phoenix had touched him.

"The spark inside you," Wukong whispered. "It's glowing. The monsters can smell it. You're the bait, Kael."

Before Kael could answer, the largest monster rose from the hill.

It was fifty feet tall. Made of screaming faces and black ink. It held a hammer made of void.

It raised the hammer.

ROAR!

The sound broke the ground.

Wukong shoved Kael behind him. He raised his hands. His fur stood up. Gold fire erupted around him.

"Stay down!" Wukong yelled.

But Kael didn't stay down.

He felt the spark. The heat. The gold in his veins.

He felt angry.

Why was he the bait? Why was he the lock?

He grabbed his sword. The blade turned gold.

"No," Kael said.

He stepped past Wukong.

"Kael!" the Monkey shouted.

Kael looked up at the giant monster. He felt the power rising. It wasn't borrowed. It wasn't from the Archive.

It was his.

He raised the sword. The sky answered.

A beam of golden light struck Kael. His eyes flashed gold.

"Get back!" Kael screamed.

He swung.

And the mountain split in two.

BOOOOOM!

The shockwave knocked Wukong off his feet.

Dust covered everything. Silence fell.

Slowly, the dust settled.

The giant monster was gone. Just a crater remained.

Kael stood in the center. His sword was gone. His hands were empty. Smoke rose from his skin.

He turned to Wukong.

The Monkey King was on his knees. He stared at Kael. His mouth hung open.

Wukong's golden eyes were wide with fear.

He crawled forward. Grabbed Kael's arm. His claws dug into the uniform.

"I know that move," Wukong whispered. His voice trembled. "I know that power."

Kael looked down. "What?"

Wukong looked up. Tears of gold ran down his fur cheeks.

"That's not just any power," Wukong said. He gripped Kael tighter. "That is the power of the Heavenly Emperor. The one who ruled before the Archive existed."

Kael tried to pull away. "That's impossible. The Emperor is dead."

Wukong shook his head. Slow. Violent.

"He's not dead," the Monkey whispered.

He pointed at Kael's chest.

"He's waking up inside you."
