A woman walked in like she owned the place. Black hair. Gold eyes. The same gold eyes as Maddox, which meant either sibling or family and the resemblance was too strong for coincidence.
"You're welcome," she said to Maddox without looking at him.
"You did this." Maddox gestured at the room like a crime scene.
Her eyes were already on Guinevere and her entire face changed.
"There she is."
She crossed the room in four steps, pulled Guinevere out of Maddox's arms like separating a child from a toy, and wrapped her in a hug so committed it squished the breath from Guinevere's lungs.
She was hugging Guinevere like they'd known each other for years.
The woman pulled back. Held Guinevere at arm's length. Looked her dead in the eyes with a certainty that left zero room for debate.
"We're best friends."
Guinevere's mouth opened. Nothing came out.
