It was the King congratulating Nevan on his marriage. He expressed regret that circumstances had prevented a proper celebration. And to honour the occasion, the Crown wished to host a ball at Wellspring on the Duke's behalf, three days from today. The palace would bear all costs. The guest list would include the region's noble families, members of the court, and foreign dignitaries currently visiting the capital. The ball would serve as the Duchess's formal introduction to society.
I lowered the letter.
A ball. At Wellspring. In three days.
"That's very generous of the King," I said carefully.
"His Majesty holds the Duke in high regard," Lord Whitmore said. "He felt it was only appropriate."
"I'm sure the Duke won't have any objection," I said, folding the letter.
