Chapter 29 - Echo

The city felt normal again.

But it wasn't.

Not really.

People moved like they always did. Vehicles passed. Voices filled the streets.

But beneath all of it—

Something had changed.

Aarav stood near the edge of a building, looking down at the city below.

"…It's quieter," he murmured.

Mira leaned against the wall nearby.

"…You say that every time."

"…Because it keeps getting worse."

She didn't argue.

Because she felt it too.

That subtle shift.

That pressure that didn't belong.

"…The anomaly is gone," she said.

"…No."

Aarav's eyes didn't move.

"…It's not gone."

"…Then what?"

"…It failed."

Silence.

Mira crossed her arms.

"…You keep saying that."

"…Because it matters."

A brief pause.

"…Something tried to form."

"…And couldn't."

Mira frowned slightly.

"…That doesn't explain what it was."

"…Not completely."

Aarav exhaled slowly.

"…But I saw part of it."

That got her attention.

"…Saw what?"

Aarav hesitated.

Not because he didn't want to say—

But because he didn't know how to.

"…It wasn't just data," he said finally.

"…It wasn't just energy."

"…It was… structured."

Mira's expression sharpened.

"…Like the system?"

Aarav shook his head slightly.

"…No."

"…Different."

He paused.

"…But connected."

Silence.

That word stayed.

Connected.

"…You're saying there's more than one system?" Mira asked.

"…I'm saying this one isn't alone."

The air felt heavier after that.

Because if that was true—

Then everything they knew—

Was incomplete.

The organization had been quiet.

Too quiet.

No calls.

No contact.

No follow-up.

"…That's not normal," Mira said.

"…No," Aarav replied.

"They're thinking."

"…About you."

"…About everything."

A faint smirk appeared on his face.

"…Good."

Mira looked at him.

"…You really don't get worried, do you?"

"…I do."

"…Then why don't you act like it?"

Aarav finally turned toward her.

"…Because worrying doesn't change anything."

She held his gaze for a moment.

Then—

"…You're exhausting."

"…I've been told."

The wind shifted slightly.

A small change.

Barely noticeable.

But Aarav felt it instantly.

His expression changed.

Subtle.

But real.

"…It's here again," he thought.

Mira noticed.

"…What?"

Aarav didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He looked forward.

Not at anything specific.

But at something—

Just beyond sight.

"…You're getting closer," he said quietly.

Mira frowned.

"…Who are you talking to?"

Silence.

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The air flickered.

Just slightly.

Like a reflection that didn't belong.

Mira's eyes widened.

"…Did you see that?"

"…Yeah."

Aarav's gaze didn't move.

"…You're not part of the system either."

The words were calm.

Direct.

Certain.

The distortion flickered again.

Stronger this time.

Still unclear.

Still incomplete.

But—

There.

Watching.

"…You were there," Aarav continued.

"…Behind the core."

The air grew colder.

Mira stepped back slightly.

"…Aarav…"

"…It's fine."

His voice remained steady.

"…It's not hostile."

"…You don't know that."

"…I do."

Silence.

Then—

For the briefest moment—

Something formed.

Not a body.

Not a shape.

But—

A presence.

Clearer than before.

And then—

Gone.

The air returned to normal.

Like nothing had happened.

Mira exhaled slowly.

"…What was that?"

Aarav smiled faintly.

"…Not what."

He turned slightly.

"…Who."

Silence followed.

Because whatever it was—

It wasn't random.

It wasn't part of the system.

And now—

It was getting closer.

Far away—

On another rooftop—

Reyansh stood alone.

Watching the same city.

His expression calm.

Unchanging.

But his eyes—

Focused.

"…It's starting," he murmured.

Because he felt it too.

Not the anomaly.

Not the system.

But something else.

Something that didn't belong.

And for the first time—

Even he didn't have an answer.
