Chapter 11 - Don't push me further

The gate closed behind them.

And with it—

all the noise of campus stayed outside.

No whispers.

No staring eyes.

No gossip.

Only silence.

And the memory of what Jarnell had done.

He had kissed Jayden.

In front of everyone.

Without warning.

Without thinking.

Now, inside the quiet of his own house—

that reality felt far more dangerous.

Jarnell walked in first while thinking about what he had done and placed his bag on the couch.

Jayden followed behind him slowly.

Calm.

Too calm.

Neither of them spoke.

But the air between them was tight with unfinished things.

Jarnell loosened the buttons of his sleeve.

Avoided looking at him.

"You can sit."

Jayden remained standing.

"I'd rather know why you kissed me."

Jarnell's hand paused briefly.

Then continued.

"It meant nothing."

Jayden almost smiled.

"That's a lie."

"It stopped that girl. That's all."

Jayden stepped closer.

"What a dramatic solution."

Jarnell turned to face him.

"It worked."

"Yes," Jayden said quietly.

"It did."

Jarnell moved toward the kitchen.

Jayden caught his wrist gently before he could pass.

The touch alone made Jarnell's breathing shift.

"Let go."

"No."

"You're annoying."

"You kissed me."

Jarnell looked away.

"That was impulse plus i was helping you"

Jayden stepped closer.

"So kiss people when you act on impulse or when you are helping them?"

"Only when they deserve it."

Jayden laughed softly.

Then lowered his voice.

"And what did I do to deserve it?"

Jarnell pulled his wrist free.

"Nothing just normal help then."

Another lie.

They both knew it

And when did i ask for your help?

After a long stare with out the both of them blinking even a little, Jayden finally looked away shyly.

His expression softened.

The teasing faded.

What remained was something more serious.

"I like you."

Silence.

Jarnell froze.

Jayden held his gaze steadily.

"I like how difficult you are."

"I like how you pretend not to care while caring too much."

"I like that you get jealous and still deny it."

"I like that you let me into a place no one else enters."

Jarnell's throat tightened unexpectedly.

"You talk too much," he muttered.

Jayden smiled faintly.

"But you're still listening."

Jayden stepped nearer again.

Close enough that Jarnell could feel the warmth of him.

"So let me do this properly."

Jarnell frowned.

"Do what?"

"Court you."

Silence.

"I'm serious," Jayden continued.

"No games."

"No passing time."

"I like you."

"So let me court you properly."

Jarnell stared at him.

"You're ridiculous."

"I know."

"I'm not easy."

"I know."

"I'm not soft."

Jayden's voice lowered.

"I know."

"That's why I'm asking."

The room had become too quiet.

Too small.

Too warm.

Jayden lifted a hand slowly to Jarnell's face.

Brushed his thumb along his cheek.

Then leaned in.

This kiss was slower than the public one.

No jealousy.

No anger.

Only intention.

Soft at first.

Then deeper when Jarnell failed to pull away.

Jarnell's fingers gripped Jayden's shirt again before he realized.

His body betraying him too easily.

Jayden's hand moved to Jarnell's waist.

Drawing him slightly closer.

The second kiss lingered.

Warm enough to make thought difficult.

Gentle enough to be dangerous.

Jarnell's breathing turned uneven.

Jayden's hand slid upward slowly, fingertips brushing his side.

His other hand reaching toward the back of Jarnell's neck—

wanting more closeness.

More contact.

More of him.

Jarnell suddenly caught Jayden's wrist.

Stopped him.

They broke apart, breaths unsteady.

Foreheads nearly touching.

Jayden looked at him quietly.

Jarnell's eyes were shut for a second before opening again.

"…Stop."

His voice came low and strained.

Jayden didn't move.

"I can't take it anymore."

The honesty in that sentence startled even Jarnell.

Too much warmth.

Too much closeness.

Too much feeling at once.

Jayden's expression changed completely.

Softer now.

Careful.

He lowered his hands immediately.

"I'm sorry."

Jarnell shook his head.

"It's not that."

"Then what?"

Jarnell looked away.

Searching for words that never came easily.

"You make it hard to think."

Silence.

Then Jayden smiled helplessly.

"That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."

Jarnell glared weakly.

"It wasn't praise."

"It was enough."

They stood there in the quiet house.

Still close.

Still changed.

Jayden spoke gently this time.

"Will you let me court you?"

Jarnell swallowed.

He should have said no.

Should have protected himself.

Should have rebuilt every wall.

Instead he muttered—

"…You're very persistent."

Jayden's smile returned slowly.

"That isn't a no."

"It isn't a yes."

"Then I'll earn the yes."

Jayden stepped back at last.

Giving Jarnell room to breathe.

Room to recover.

Room to miss him once he left.

At the door, Jayden turned once.

"Goodnight, Jarnell."

Jarnell leaned against the wall, avoiding his eyes.

"…Goodnight."

Jayden opened the door.

Then added softly—

"I'll start tomorrow."

The door closed.

Jarnell stood alone in the silence.

Touched his own lips once.

And realized the real problem wasn't Jayden kissing him.

It was how badly he wanted it to happen again.

He kept thinking about every detail of Jayden's words as he felt shy before going to take a shower and then go to bed.

It was a sweet kiss they all needed.
