Chapter 108 - Chapter 108 - The Problem of Runtime

A standard-length animated movie generally ran for about ninety minutes, while slightly longer ones barely reached one hundred minutes.

Short!

Far too short!

So short that Kamiyā Yuu had no idea what he should cram into such a limited runtime. Everything he had conceived for 'RWBY' was like a huge bucket of water, while one hundred minutes was merely a cup-sized container. No matter what, it simply could not hold even one extra drop.

Therefore, when it came to choosing what to include in the story, he had to simplify the complex and focus only on the core.

"Maybe it would be better to make it into a long-running anime instead... but I don't really want to keep spending time on 'RWBY.' After all, there are countless excellent works from my previous world."

Kamiyā Yuu rubbed his temples with a headache. The tension in his thoughts only made his mind go blank instead, leaving him unsure where to even begin planning the 'RWBY' movie version.

His body weakly slumped into the office chair as he tilted his head back and stared blankly at the snow-white ceiling as if trying to see flowers bloom on it.

A long while passed.

The personal office remained deathly silent.

Despite all his frustration, he still did not want to compromise even a single step on the quality of the 'RWBY' movie version. If he were just going to handle it carelessly, then it would be better not to make the movie at all.

"The original villain storyline isn't suitable for a movie. The pacing is way too dragged out in every aspect, especially since the antagonists spend most of the early stages just messing around."

"The movie version should focus on character portrayal and the presentation of the world's setting. In that regard, 'Dark Souls' is actually a very good reference model. These two works share quite a few similarities."

"There needs to be something capable of driving the plot forward and influencing the growth of the four protagonists."

"'RWBY's original detailed world setting and lore······."

"Darkness and light... isn't that an eternal theme? But even an unchanging theme can shine anew under fresh settings. Right, it isn't actually that complicated."

Kamiyā Yuu felt as though he had vaguely grasped some inspiration, yet he couldn't clearly see what it was. After bottling it up for a long while, the irritation in his thoughts made him feel so awful he nearly coughed blood.

He grabbed his hair painfully with both hands and cursed through gritted teeth in a low voice.

"Dammit dammit dammit!!!! This feels even worse than writer's block when I used to write novels in my previous world!"

"Forget it! Screw this! I'm taking a break first!"

Unable to suppress the restlessness in his heart, Kamiyā Yuu abruptly stood up, opened the office door, and quickly returned to his room. But the moment he saw the empty room, he weakly groaned inside.

"Right... Sora still has school today."

Whenever he encountered something troubling, he always liked holding Kamiyā Sora quietly in his arms. The fragrance from her body would gradually calm his heart.

Leaning against the doorway with both hands braced against it, Kamiyā Yuu gloomily tapped his forehead lightly against the wall.

"I've despaired! I've despaired over this world where nothing ever goes smoothly!"

······

Laundry, cleaning the house, going out to buy daily necessities and ingredients, folding clothes······

After finishing all those chores, Kamiyā Yuu realized the clock had only barely reached two in the afternoon.

Japanese schools generally use a lunch-break system. Students could freely move around during lunch break, but they were not allowed to leave campus or return home. They could either eat homemade bento lunches or buy food from the school cafeteria.

Kamiyā Sora's school was the same. Students were required to arrive at school by nine in the morning and were dismissed around three or four in the afternoon. The one decent thing was that her school did not force students to participate in club activities.

As a result, Kamiyā Sora naturally became a member of the "Going Home Club."

"What should I do now?"

Lying on the tatami floor of the living room, Kamiyā Yuu muttered softly to himself. After finishing everything, he genuinely had no idea what else to do.

Feeling rather irritated, he decided to postpone planning the story until tonight in his consciousness space. At the moment, he didn't want to continue thinking about work-related matters.

Back in his previous world, the best way to kill boredom had undoubtedly been playing games. Yet in this world, Kamiyā Yuu had no desire whatsoever to touch computer entertainment.

It wasn't because he had become some sort of workaholic. Rather, the gaming standards of this world were simply not very good, and Japanese-style games had never particularly suited his tastes in the first place.

The only thing that seemed decent was this world's Japanese visual novels. Their level of development was comparable to Japan in the previous world's corresponding era. Even so, Kamiyā Yuu still had no interest in playing that type of game right now.

"Forget it. I might as well go into the consciousness space. Even though I can't really experience much enjoyment in that mental state."

Kamiyā Yuu slowly closed his eyes and instinctively entered the consciousness space.

In truth, being in the consciousness space and the real world gave him completely different mental experiences.

Within the consciousness space, he could simulate everything from reality, including bodily sensations. However, there he lost something extremely important to humans—emotion and impulse.

As long as he was inside the consciousness space, his thoughts became exceptionally clear.

For example, if he fantasized about a fictional woman in reality, then after entering the consciousness space, he could create that woman and fulfill those fantasies.

However, once inside the consciousness world, his way of thinking would change considerably. The physiological and psychological impulses of reality transformed into merely the desire to carry out those fantasies.

To put it more clearly, once he entered the consciousness space, he basically became like the bald Saitama-sensei—

"I became stronger, and bald too, while also losing normal human emotions and excitement."

After noticing the difference between his thinking in the consciousness space and reality, Kamiyā Yuu usually reorganized his ideas again in the real world after planning a work inside the consciousness space, removing any subtle sense of dissonance that normal people might notice.

After all, the anime he created wasn't for himself to watch, but for ordinary audiences to enjoy.

The pure white consciousness world suddenly lit up.

The moment Kamiyā Yuu's consciousness arrived there, endless inspiration and creative passion surged toward him.

The vague ideas from reality instantly became clear. He began conceptualizing every aspect of the 'RWBY' movie version from a unique perspective that overlooked the entire picture.

Story direction, musical style, character designs, worldbuilding, core elements, and so on.

When ordinary people built a house, they would inevitably lay the foundation first, then erect pillars, and finally build the walls step by step in a steady process.

Kamiyā Yuu, however, constructed houses differently within the consciousness space.

While laying the foundation, he was simultaneously building walls. While building walls, he was also decorating the interior.

This was one of the fundamental differences between his mortal-state thinking and his godlike-state thinking within the consciousness space.

The latter method made it easier to identify problems and maintain control over the overall structure.

"As expected, the adventurer-style approach better brings out this work's unique charm and emphasizes the world setting."

"Based on the original setting, while removing the academy storyline, isn't there already an excellent reference work for the new plot?"

"For example, Togashi's 'Hunter × Hunter.'"

"But movie runtimes are tighter—simple and direct. The movie format can't cram in overly complicated things. As long as the unique characteristics of 'RWBY' are properly displayed, that'll be enough."

"It also needs a little depth and thematic core."
