Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2 — The Lie in His Eyes

David didn't answer immediately.

That was the first crack in the illusion.

In all their years together, he had always been quick—quick with charm, with reassurance, with answers that made everything feel safe again. He was the man who could talk his way out of any situation, who could calm storms with nothing but his voice.

But now?

Silence.

And it was deafening.

His eyes flickered, just for a second.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Something colder.

Something calculating.

"Amara… what is this?" he asked finally, his tone carefully controlled, like he was already building a defense.

A hollow laugh escaped her lips.

"What is it?" she repeated. "You tell me."

Her hand trembled as she lifted the phone higher, forcing him to see it.

"Explain it, David."

He glanced at the screen.

Briefly.

Too briefly.

And then he looked away.

That was when her heart truly broke.

Because that look—the quick glance, the immediate avoidance—

It wasn't the reaction of a man seeing something shocking for the first time.

It was the reaction of a man who already knew.

"It's fake," he said flatly. "Someone is trying to mess with us."

"Fake?" Her voice rose, disbelief and anger mixing dangerously. "A full DNA report is fake?"

"Yes."

"You didn't even read it."

"I don't need to."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"Then look at me and say it."

David hesitated.

That hesitation lasted less than two seconds.

But it was enough.

Enough to shatter everything she thought was real.

"Say that you are the father of our child," she whispered.

His jaw clenched.

A muscle ticked.

"I am," he said.

But this time…

There was no conviction.

No warmth.

No truth.

Amara took a step back as if the words themselves had pushed her away.

"You're lying."

"I'm not—"

"You're lying, David!" she snapped, louder this time.

A few nearby guests turned subtly, pretending not to watch.

But she didn't care anymore.

Let them see.

Let them all see the perfect marriage fall apart.

"Lower your voice," David muttered, stepping closer, his tone sharp now. "Not here."

"Not here?" she echoed, her eyes blazing. "So there is something to hide?"

He exhaled slowly, frustration creeping into his expression.

"This is not the place for this conversation."

"Then when?" she demanded. "After I find out my entire life is a lie?"

His expression hardened.

"Go home," he said quietly. "We'll talk there."

Amara stared at him.

Really stared.

At the man she had trusted with everything.

And for the first time…

She felt like she was looking at a stranger.

Her phone buzzed again.

Both of them froze.

Slowly, she lowered her gaze.

Another message.

From the same number.

Her fingers felt numb as she opened it.

"Ask him about London."

Her breath caught.

She lifted her eyes slowly.

Meeting his.

"London?" she whispered.

David's face changed.

The color drained.

His composure cracked.

And in that moment—

He didn't even try to lie.
