"Don't," he cut in, his voice flat and devoid of its usual sarcastic warmth. He didn't move down the last step. He just stood there, arms folded, watching me like I was a problem he was waiting to dispose of. "Don't do that, Isla. Don't pull that bruised, tragic expression when you're the one who locked me in this paradise for over a month."
I swallowed hard, the speech I had rehearsed on the flight dissolving into nothing. "It wasn't a punishment. I was keeping you away from—"
"From what?" Leonard's laugh was sharp, devoid of humor. He finally stepped off the landing, and quickly closed the distance between us. "From your grandfather? From the police? Or from watching you burn your life to the ground for a pop star whose father you're trying to destroy?"
"And to what ends do you draw such conclusions?" I let out a sigh, running my hand through my hair and taking several steps away from him. "I needed you to think, become logical again. You were—"
