​I wondered what I was doing back at the one place I despised—my old house in Macadona.

​I had a gun in my hand, running with no clue why I held it or where I was headed. It was the blood I saw first, slick and dark against the floor.

​He was panicking, looking confused.

​"Uncle Gerald," I said, my voice barely audible.

​He turned to face me. "Audrey—"

​I didn't even register my hand moving, nor my finger tightening, but a gunshot tore through the air. And then, two dead bodies lay on the floor.

​I dropped the gun as I heard heavy footsteps approaching. I moved slowly toward my grandmother. She was already dead.

​I turned back toward Gerald.

​No... I was running again. That wasn't how it happened.

​Uncle Gerald and Grandmother were lying in a pool of blood. I was lying in it too—was I hurt? No, I wasn't.

​I was running again.
