"Why are you really here, Audrey?"
"Some habits never really change," a voice echoed from the threshold. We all turned our heads. Grandfather approached the long table, leaning lightly on his mahogany cane. "I feel offended. I wasn't even noticed for the two minutes I stood here."
The dining room had gone dead quiet the moment he walked in. Sarah and I were still standing. Neither of us had sat back down after breakfast dissolved into whatever volatile mess this was.
He walked with a calmness that annoyed me, moving to his usual seat at the head of the table. He looked between us slowly, his sharp, milky eyes lingering on Leonard before he finally sat down with the careful, deliberate movement of a man whose joints had started filing complaints.
"You two," Grandfather rumbled, adjusting his cuffs. Sarah sat. I didn't. "Every time. Like cats and dogs."
