Why was I here?
I was being a manager once again, but whatever I had in store for her future was not only going to hurt her but me.
My feelings, my thoughts. Every time I closed my eyes, I tasted her—her lips, that courtroom kiss that was supposed to feel more like a spur-of-the-moment one time thing.
Then there was me telling her to wait for me. God was I cooked.
I had seen Elara smile. I had seen her cry, seen her break down, seen her furious. But the look on her face tonight was an entirely new expression, one I had never seen from her before. It wasn't just anger. She looked entirely betrayed.
"You have the audacity," she said slowly, her voice trembling. "After telling me to wait for you… to audition men for me?"
"It's not an audition," I answered, the words barely audible over the roaring panic in my ears.
"Oh? Because it feels like one."
"It's a strategy. This is for your sake."
