Chapter 12 - chapter 12:The Serpent’s Invitation

"I am aware the General monitors the northern borders with a scrutiny that borders on the obsessive," Ling Xiao said, his voice as smooth as the high-grade silk draped over his shoulders. He kept his gaze fixed on the ornamental screen nearby, appearing momentarily captivated by the intricate carvings of golden cranes, though his mind was busy mapping every shift in the Minister's pulse. "However, as a newcomer to such a grand household, my own focus has been limited to the... administrative adjustments of my new station."

Minister Wei Zhongshan chuckled—a dry, raspy sound like old parchment rubbing together in a drafty room. "Administrative adjustments. A charmingly bureaucratic euphemism, Young Master Ling. But we are within the Capital's walls now. Here, 'administration' is rarely about paperwork; it is the polite word we use for survival."

He paused, his eyes sharpening into two points of cold light. "The northern supply routes are more than just lines on a tactical map, you see. They are the primary arteries of this Empire's wealth. Your husband, the General, has been remarkably... conservative with the passage rights lately. He claims military necessity, but from where I stand, I see a bottleneck that inconveniences many powerful men. Men with long memories."

[System: Threat detected. Analyzing intent... The Minister is testing your structural integrity. He is trying to determine if you are a bridge he can cross to reach the General, or a reinforced wall he must demolish.]

"A bottleneck is often just a necessary filter," Ling Xiao replied, finally turning his head to meet the Minister's gaze directly. He didn't blink. "It ensures that only the essential passes through, while the waste is caught before it can clog the system. The General isn't fond of waste—whether it's in logistics, or in unnecessary conversation."

Wei Zhongshan's benign smile didn't falter, but the air around them seemed to drop a few degrees. "A filter. How poetic. But even filters can be bypassed if they become too restrictive for the flow of gold. Tell me, Ling Xiao—for a man who supposedly lived a quiet, unremarkable life in the provinces, you seem remarkably comfortable in a hall filled with wolves. Where exactly did a minor official's son learn to speak in such pointed riddles?"

Ling Xiao leaned in just a fraction, his voice dropping to a confidential whisper that felt like a blade wrapped in velvet. "I lived in a very unusual hometown, Minister. We didn't have many wolves to contend with, but the forests were thick with foxes. I learned early on that when a fox invites you for a 'pleasant walk,' it's best to keep your hands firmly on your pockets and your eyes fixed on the nearest exit."

The Minister froze for a heartbeat, the mask of the kindly grandfather slipping just enough to reveal the predatory architect beneath. Then, he let out a genuine, booming laugh that echoed off the lacquered pillars, drawing the curious eyes of nearby censors.

"Magnificent! Long Wei has found a spouse with a spine of forged steel and a tongue of silver. I begin to understand why the Matriarch moved heaven and earth to secure this match." He straightened the jade scale pin at his collar, his expression turning grimly serious. "But remember this, Young Master: steel can be bent under enough heat, and silver is easily melted. The North is cold, but the Capital is a furnace. And the fire is just beginning to rise."

"I'll keep that in mind," Ling Xiao said, offering a shallow, perfectly calibrated bow. "But I've always found that the best way to handle a furnace is to make sure you're the one holding the bellows."

As the Minister moved away, fading back into the sea of silk and shadows, Ling Xiao felt a heavy, familiar presence settle behind him. The temperature in his immediate vicinity didn't just drop—it solidified.

"He was testing the load-bearing capacity of the bridge," Long Wei's voice was a low vibration, barely audible over the hum of the crowd.

"And?" Ling Xiao asked, looking up. The General was standing close—closer than protocol strictly required—his silhouette a wall of iron against the golden light of the hall.

Long Wei watched the retreating back of the Minister. "You didn't break. But you've done something much more dangerous, Ling Xiao. You've made yourself an interesting variable. Wei Zhongshan doesn't like variables he cannot solve with a simple subtraction."

"Then it's a good thing I'm a very complex equation," Ling Xiao said, his lips curving into a tired but defiant smile.

Long Wei's hand twitched, as if he intended to reach out and ground Ling Xiao with a touch, before he pulled it back into the safety of his sleeve. "The formal dinner begins at the Hour of the Dog. Stay within my shadow. The Minister was merely the vanguard. The Emperor's brothers are the real ambush, and they do not hide behind metaphors."

Ling Xiao looked up at the soaring, oppressive ceiling, then back at the only man who looked at him as a person rather than a piece on a board.

"Let them come," Ling Xiao said quietly. "I've already survived the end of one world. I think I can manage a dinner party."

Author's Note:"The fox meets the tiger! 🦊 Ling Xiao's corporate background is finally paying off. He's using the same logic he used for data systems to navigate the Minister's traps. Calling the Minister a fox to his face is a bold move—one that clearly earned him some respect (and a lot of Favorability) from our silent General.

But the 'Hour of the Dog' is approaching. The reception was just the appetizer; the formal dinner is where the real daggers come out. The Imperial Princes are waiting, and they aren't interested in riddles—they're interested in blood.

Question of the day: Do you think Ling Xiao should have stayed 'naive' to hide his brilliance longer, or was it time to show the court he has teeth? 🦷🗡️
