Chapter 88 - Chapter 88: The Weight Beneath Silence

The island was quiet.

Not the peaceful kind.

The wrong kind.

The kind where sound existed—

but didn't travel.

Footsteps felt heavier here.

Even when they weren't.

The crew moved along the narrow path.

Trees surrounded them.

Dense.

Unmoving.

No birds.

No distant voices.

Just wind—

and even that felt… restrained.

Carina was the first to break the silence.

"…Okay. I officially don't like this place."

Kuina didn't slow down.

"…Stay alert."

Tashigi adjusted her glasses.

"…There's no visible activity."

A pause.

"…But signs of presence," she added.

Kevin noticed them too.

Subtle.

Footprints that had been erased—

but not completely.

Cut branches—

recent.

Movement—

controlled.

"…People are here," Kevin said.

Carina crossed her arms.

"…Then where are they?"

No one answered.

Behind them—

Nami walked quietly.

Too quietly.

Her eyes moved constantly.

Not scanning.

Remembering.

She knew the turns.

She knew where the path would split—

before it did.

She didn't speak.

But her steps slowed—

just slightly—

before each change.

Kevin noticed.

He said nothing.

The path opened.

A village.

Small.

Worn.

And silent.

Carina blinked.

"…Okay… that's not normal."

Houses stood intact.

Doors closed.

No visible damage.

No signs of battle.

But—

no people.

Kuina stepped forward.

Slow.

Measured.

Tashigi beside her.

Same timing.

Kevin followed.

Carina stayed close behind.

"…This is worse than the forest."

A door creaked open.

All four turned instantly.

A man stepped out.

Old.

Careful.

Watching them like they didn't belong.

Which they didn't.

"…You shouldn't be here," he said.

His voice wasn't loud.

But it carried.

Kuina spoke calmly.

"…We're just passing through."

The man shook his head.

"…No one just passes through."

A pause.

Tashigi stepped forward slightly.

"…What happened here?"

The man hesitated.

His eyes shifted.

Not at them—

past them.

Behind.

Nami froze.

Just for a second.

Then—

she stepped slightly to the side.

Out of direct view.

Kevin saw it.

"…We don't have time to explain," the man said.

"…You should leave before—"

He stopped.

Footsteps.

From inside the village.

More doors opened.

More people appeared.

Watching.

Silent.

Not curious.

Not welcoming.

Just… careful.

Carina lowered her voice.

"…Why does everyone look like that?"

Kuina didn't answer.

But her grip tightened.

Tashigi's expression sharpened.

Kevin stepped forward.

"…Before what?" he asked.

The man looked at him.

Then—

quietly—

"…Before you're seen."

Silence dropped.

Not confusion.

Understanding.

Carina exhaled.

"…Okay, I REALLY don't like that sentence."

Kuina's eyes narrowed.

"…Seen by who?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

His gaze shifted again.

Toward the distance.

Toward something not visible from here.

"…They control this place," he said quietly.

Tashigi adjusted her glasses.

"…Pirates."

Not a question.

The man nodded.

"…We pay. We stay quiet. We survive."

Carina frowned.

"…That's not living."

No one in the village responded.

Because they knew that already.

Kevin's gaze shifted.

Toward Nami.

She hadn't moved.

Hadn't spoken.

But her expression—

was different.

Not surprised.

Not shocked.

Just… still.

"…You knew," Kevin said quietly.

Silence.

Everyone looked at her.

Carina blinked.

"…Wait—what?"

Nami didn't respond immediately.

Her eyes stayed forward.

Then—

"…I had an idea," she said.

Too controlled.

Too clean.

Kuina stepped slightly closer.

"…That's not the same as this."

Tashigi added softly:

"…You recognized the route."

Carina looked between them.

"…Okay, can we not do secrets right now?"

Nami exhaled.

"…I said I knew something," she replied.

Not denial.

But not truth.

Kevin didn't push further.

Not yet.

Instead—

he looked back at the man.

"…Where are they?" he asked.

The man hesitated.

Then slowly raised his hand—

pointing toward the far end of the island.

"…There."

A pause.

"…Don't go."

Carina immediately said:

"…We're definitely going."

Kuina didn't respond.

Tashigi didn't argue.

Kevin turned.

Decision made.

"…We confirm," he said.

Simple.

Final.

The villagers didn't stop them.

They didn't follow either.

They just watched.

Like people who had seen this before.

And knew how it ended.

As the crew moved deeper into the island—

the silence followed them.

Heavier now.

Closer.

And behind them—

Nami walked slightly slower.

Just enough to fall a step behind.

Her gaze dropped briefly.

Hands tightening at her sides.

Something beneath the surface—

cracking.

But not breaking.

Not yet.

Ahead—

beyond the trees—

something waited.

Not hidden anymore.

Not distant.

Real.

And this time—

everyone could feel it.

Even if not everyone understood it.
