Chapter 62 - CHAPTER 62:Eyes on the Sea

The sea felt different again the next morning.

Not calmer.

Not more dangerous.

Just… observed.

Kevin stood at the bow for a long time without speaking.

Carina noticed it first.

"…You've been staring at the same direction for like ten minutes."

Kevin replied calmly.

"…Something is tracking us."

Kuina's eyes sharpened immediately.

"…Pirates?"

Kevin shook his head slightly.

"…Not pirates."

Tashigi turned toward him.

"…Then what?"

Kevin paused.

"…Structured movement."

Carina frowned.

"…That sounds like a fancy way of saying 'bad feeling'."

Kevin replied.

"…It is not a feeling."

Silence followed.

Kuina stepped closer.

"…Marines."

Kevin nodded once.

"…Yes."

That single word changed the air on the ship.

Tashigi froze slightly.

"…Marines… are following us?"

Kevin answered.

"…Not yet engaged. Observing distance."

Carina groaned.

"…Of course. We finally get pirates AND now government attention."

Far behind them—

Unseen on the horizon—

A Marine scout vessel maintained distance.

Silent.

Careful.

Onboard that ship—

Reports were being written.

"…Confirmed sighting of unknown swordswoman group."

"…One matches survivor profile."

"…Priority observation assigned."

Back on Kevin's ship—

Kuina tightened her grip slightly.

"…They are watching us."

Kevin replied.

"…Yes."

Tashigi lowered her gaze slightly.

"…Because of me…"

Carina blinked.

"…Wait, what?"

Kevin looked at Tashigi directly.

"…You are a variable."

Tashigi frowned.

"…A variable?"

Kevin nodded.

"…Your survival changed expected outcomes."

Silence.

That answer was not comforting.

But it was honest.

Kuina stepped forward slightly.

"…If they come, we fight."

Carina sighed.

"…Can we not make that the default answer?"

Kuina replied.

"…It is consistent."

That evening—

Training resumed on deck.

But the atmosphere had shifted.

Kuina and Tashigi faced each other again.

But now—

Neither was fully relaxed.

Carina stepped back.

"…Okay, this feels more serious now."

Kevin watched closely.

"…Engage."

Kuina moved first.

Faster than before.

Tashigi blocked—

Better timing this time.

Less hesitation.

Carina blinked.

"…She caught that cleaner than before…"

Kuina noticed too.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You improved again."

Tashigi nodded.

"…I adjusted."

Their exchange continued.

Longer.

Sharper.

Closer.

Not equal—

But narrowing.

After several exchanges—

Kuina stepped back slightly.

Paused.

"…You are approaching."

Tashigi breathed steadily.

"…I am trying to understand your rhythm."

Kuina replied.

"…Then change yours."

Carina whispered.

"…Why does that sound like a life lesson and a threat at the same time…"

Kevin spoke quietly.

"…Progress accelerating."

Kuina and Tashigi both heard it.

But did not stop.

That night—

Tashigi stayed awake longer than usual.

Again.

But now her expression was different.

Less confusion.

More focus.

Somewhere inside her—

The idea of Marines no longer felt absolute.

Just… present.

Not truth.

Not wrong.

Just one side.

And that shift—

Was dangerous for the system she once believed in.

Far away—

The Marine scout vessel continued tracking silently.

Unaware that the variable they were observing…

Was already beginning to change direction internally.

And Kevin—

Had already noticed it.
